There are a lot of casting rumors floating around, and a press release is due out soon so I figure we can start discussing. Really disappointed to hear that Philip Seymour Hoffman isnt attached to this. More info:

I hate when directors try to get less flack for a remake by saying they're readapting the book, not remaking the movie (see: Spielberg/Smith w/ Oldboy)

Terrible. Just awful. The only reason to remake this film would be to make money.

Stupid, stupid, stupid. There is no reason to do this whatsoever, and if these idiotic directors loved film as much as they say they do, then they'd realize that. This has become one of those 'accepted' remakes for some reason that I don't understand, but whatever.
Add on that Reeves hasn't done a relevant thing in his entire career, and it makes me care even less. /cynic

The only reason I can see people accepting this remake is so they can say "oh, I saw the original and it was much better". I'll tell you right now the original is better than anything this hack director is gonna be able to shit out. No need for him to try.

Yeah, I see what you mean. And the thing is, the other side of that spectrum is the people that would have no clue there is an original to begin with, like with Quarantine. They'll pass it off like the real thing, ask if LtROI was a remake of Let Me In, say they have no interest in watching the foreign version because they "hate reading while I watch a movie," etc. Ugh. I wish I lived in Europe.

Didn't Cloverfield have the best opening weekend of any January movie ever? A lot of people like that movie, I wouldn't exactly call Reeves irrelevant.

you can be certain that this movie isn't gonna have the quite desolate feel of the original. similarities are in story only, director already said his intent wasn't on 'remaking' the original....which he rightfully said wouldn't play to an american audience.

I was like you, man. I would go around this site being a complete fucking idiot. Spurting my thoughtless and completely random opinions all over every thread I entered. Then I wondered, "Why is everyone yelling at me over the internetzz all the time?" And I thought to myself. Maybe everyone on the internet is a douche or I'm just a fucking idiot. Then I read some books and started typing in proper grammar

the movie blew, plain and simple. the storyline was weak. the acting was insipid. the direction was mediocre at best. and the only counterpoints presented are someone else's reviews? seriously? i'm sorry, i didn't realize thinking on your own was such a stretch for some of you.
but just the same, if no one gives a rat's ass what i think of the movie, you know no one gives a rat's ass what you think either.

god i hope i dont hate this. the original was one of the best movies ive seen in a long time
Ok, back to the topic after all that...
I was not impressed with that trailer, but I probably went into it not expecting to like it. That desolate, cold Swedish setting in the original, it worked perfectly. As someone said earlier, this looks to be playing more to the Twilight crowd. I actually think some horror remakes in recent years weren't bad at all (The Hills Have Eyes, The Crazies, Dawn of the Dead), but those were all older movies to start with, there's no reason to remake this recent of a film. They need to give us Americans more credit that we can appreciate the original. If further trailers prove to look better, maybe I'll give it a shot, but I think I'm happy just sticking with Let the Right One In.

I bought let the right one in the other day because I found a gift card and my friend hadn't seen it. It seems like a lot of people are forgetting, or dont even know, that the Swedish version is based on a book, and even that movie has different scenes or is missing entire scenes from the book.
I feel like im the only one who doesn't see this as a remake but a re-imagining. Sure, there's already one good movie based on the source material, but this time its an american company making an adaptation for an american audience. As much as I'd love for everyone to see the Swedish version, foreign films just get lost over here and don't get the audience they deserve. This is a chance for a broader audience to see a great story and a lot of people will seek out Let the Right One In. But really, when it comes to making movies adapted from a written source, is the first movie considered the original and all other subsequent movies are "remakes" or is every movie just a re-interpretation of the same story?

good point. depends on what the american director is using for source material - the book or the swedish version
I think i'll enjoy it if there's:
A. no shitty cgi cats attack scene
B. an ending as good as the first movie. not necessarily the same ending, just one as shocking and with the same emotional impact. Though judging by the trailer, it looks like it takes place in a pool.

Early reviews:
"at least as good as the original, with a meticulous, unhurried, highly absorbing style. more impressed with moretz than leandersson."
"it's breathtaking and yes i think it's better than the original."
"commands respect for not dumbing things down, offering classy, 'sixth sense' style crossover potential as it lures both genre suckers and fresh blood."
"giacchino's score could be something to watch this season."

I've been wary/excited to see it since it was announced. The idea of Jenkins, Moretz and Reeves (who I think has a legit future has a seriously good director ahead of him) sounded great, but the idea of remakes never immediately bodes well to me. Cannot wait now.

Hoping to catch this when I'm home this weekend, I have a hard time believing it'll top the original like everyone's saying but the reviews have me interested.
I just got back from the midnight. It was great but I've still got to say I liked the original more. SPOILERS AHEAD------- I didn't really like the police officer in the film as a replacement of the character in the original or the chick that got bitten and survived, they werent as developed. The one thing that really does bug me though about this version is that when owen finds the picture of abby and the caretaker from when he was young, it implies that abby just used the caretaker to get what she wanted from him and is now going to use owen for the same thing. Really does take away from the romantic element
Better than the original. Right.
There's no way it could be improved upon. Its....its....its a FOREIGN MOVIE.

You should put the spoilers in spoiler tags. However, as for "owen" becoming "abby's" caretaker, you could easily infer that from the original movie and the book. At least, it crossed my mind when I read it.
But yeah, just got back from this. Loved it. It does some things better than the original, some things worse. The CG looked horrendous, but thankfully that was only in like two scenes. Also when Hakan (the caretaker) gets in that car wreck and rolls down the hill with the stationary camera inside the car, that looked fucking awesome.

I have. I think it's one of the best and most important films from the past 30 years and the best 'vampire movie' of all-time.

There's one really cool scene not from the original, it's beautifully shot and well acted, so yeah. I just don't like some of the choices they made. In all honesty, it could be a good movie stand alone for people that haven't seen the original. I just can't help but compare how things were more satisfying to me in the swedish version.

Wish people would stop shitting on it before seeing it. I was just as pissed to find out they were remaking my favorite movie as the rest of the original fans, but this stays extremely faithful where it should (pacing, mood, atmosphere) and changes other things up to let the movie stand on its own. It does some things better the scenes where the "caretaker" goes out and gets blood for eli, and some things worse pretty much any time they use the horrible, I Am Legend esque CGI. Wish they just stuck with practical stuff .
If you actually go out and see it and hate it, then by all means shit on it.

I've been dying to see this. Plans to see this the past two nights have failed. Maybe I should just pop in the original again til I can finally see it.
I liked it. Unnecessary? Sure. Good movie? Definitely. Some things were moved and changed with varying results. I thought some parts were better and some parts shouldn't have been tampered with. Overall I feel like I just took a slightly different path to the same destination. Unfortunately, it has the remake thing going against it. Too many people are going to avoid it on pre-conceived notions that its a hollywood cash grab. People who are seeing this for the first time, however, are probably going to love it. I just think what its going to come down to is which one you see first. personally, I liked the people of the apartment complex getting killed and the cop investigating it better than the group of drunk friends. Everything was tied together better that way. When the cop was dying on the floor and reached for Owen's hand, but he just closes the door, that sent a chill up my spine. Incredible scene. And as for the lady who turns into a vampire being "more developed", how? She had 2 or 3 minutes of screen time in the original and a cat attack scene. The only thing that made her part better was the fact that she chose to kill herself, which made her death more powerful, as opposed to it being an accident. I hope this movie does well. Even if its a remake, its still the best horror movie to come out over here in a while.

Definitely agree with the decision to cut out/condense Lacke, Virginia and all that whole side group. Feel like it made the film a lot tighter and still had all the important scenes that involved them other than that cat scene, which was done horribly in the original anyway.

i watched the original this weekend, and to be honest i liked the american one more.
they both had their strong points - where certain scenes i preferred in the original.
but i just liked the cinematography and atmosphere in the american version a whole lot more, subtle things.
also my friend who told me about this movie who saw the swedish one first, after watching it again said he prefers the american one as well, and that the original seemed a lot more intense the first time he watched it.

I've seen the original, and although I like the original more than this American remake, I have respect for the American remake because it was pretty well done. I think I just appreciated the camera angles in the original version - especially in the climactic scene. The acting in the American version was superb as well.

Still haven't gotten around to see the American version yet, but I quite look forward to it, just to see how it is because I loved the Swedish version.

I liked it! It was quite pointless, as a million others have said, but I fucking love Chloe and thought she did great. The atmosphere, you could tell it was trying to replicate, but in doing so, it kind of created its own unique feel. I dunno. I'm not over-the-moon about it, but it was still enjoyable.

Well in the book, Eli was castrated by a vampire nobleman hence why I asked. Plus, it is worth noting that the actress who played Eli in the original had her voice dubbed over with a male's.
