Greg Graffin (Bad Religion) joins forces with Preston Jones (historian with a specialty in religion) by writing a book titled Is Belief in God Good, Bad or Irrelevant?. The book looks to hit shelves on July 30 (http://www.absolutepunk.net/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=734&day=2006-7-30) from InterVarsity Press. As previously reported, Greg's solo album Cold as the Clay will be hitting stores July 11th (http://www.absolutepunk.net/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=654&c=3).
sigh... you really shouldn't be able to right a book about religion just because you play in a band called "Bad Religion". I'm seriously doubting this will be anything more than just some guy in a previously relevant band ranting.
Excerpts:
"Like dude, the Crusades were WRONG",
"I have friends with Bhuddist tattoos"
"Uptight whitebread suburban Christians are so intolerant; eff them "

However if maybe ... "Graffin double majored in anthropology (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthropology) and geology (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geology) as an undergraduate at the University of California, Los Angeles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_California%2C_Los_Ang eles). He would also earn a masters degree in geology from UCLA and receive his Ph.D. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctor_of_Philosophy) in evolutionary paleontology (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paleontology) from Cornell University (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cornell_University). However, according to a video clip originally from the Bad Religion official website (http://www.badreligion.com/) and also available from The Cornell Evolution Project (http://www.cornellevolutionproject.org/) homepage, the PhD thesis was officially a Zoology PhD thesis, supervised by William B. Provine (http://www.eeb.cornell.edu/provine/provine.html) at Cornell University (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cornell_University). The thesis was entitled "Monism, Atheism and the Naturalist Worldview: Perspectives from Evolutionary Biology". It is described as being essentially an evolutionary biology PhD but having also relevance to history and philosophy of science. " Then he MIGHT know what he's talking about ...

Thank you, I did not want to have to explain all of that to that kid.
I couldn't have done it any better myself.

nothing i say matters because tate already pulled your panties down and railed you.
Tons of people with religious opinions get Doctorate degrees in Biology every year. The only reason that this guy gets to publish a book is because he's in a band.

Most doctorates from CORNELL can publish just about all they fucking want.
Not saying he's not smart. I'm basically saying:
1. He only gets to write a book cause he's in a band.
2. He's in a washed up band that angry 8th graders like (well, that was more implicit).

I'm saying you're wrong and there's no way this book is being published because he's "in Bad Religion" any more then "he has a PHD from Cornell."
Furthermore, I don't find them washed up.

I'm not going to dignify the rest of this discussion with a response, I'm just going to say that it needs a snappier title

Furthermore, I don't find them washed up.
And I'm saying that the book that he's qualified to write should be titled
"How I Got A Doctorate From Cornell And Then Spent My Life Making Angry Teenager Music" by Greg Gaffin.
And if you don't prefer "washed up" then we can just agree on "generally irrelevant".

You are possibly one of the dumbest people I've come across on this site...
If you know anything about Greg Graffin/Bad Religion you would know how stupid your comments are, but obviously you don't..

I apologize. I promise to buy this book when it comes out, cause I'm sure this guy is really, really, smart and important like you're all saying, and not just someone in a really bad band. Sorry to have disturbed the general consensus that this guy is a true genius. I bet he's ditching band practice right now to split atoms in his basement.

You don't know much about Bad Religion, and it shows. But dude, really, you're making yourself look like a biiiiig fucking idiot.

I really dont get why people have such problems with band memebers doing something outside of the band. People get angry when a band memember particpates in politics, writing a book, or really anything else. They need to realize that these are just regular human beings who have different desires, the band can not encompass everything they are. Greg Graffin is clearly interested in this subject, so let him persue it in peace, regardless of what band he is in. People have taken this ownership of band music thing way to far.

He is obviously smart, I just hope for knowledges sake that he can remain unbiased in the book. Someone who has written "i'll belive in God when one and one is five" would seem to have a bias, but hopefully it won't come through

Based on the fact that it is coming out on IV Press I would assume it is a debate style format with the other author.

discrediting him because he is in a band?
what about Henry Rollins? that guy is a god and writes books and does spoken word shows.
i'll be sure to buy the book if Tate keeps us updated on it.
and btw, last i checked all it took was a pen and paper to write a book.
he could of written it if he was in a band or not.
maybe you're thinking about getting a book published.
and yea with that kind of education i'm sure anybody could get their book published.

IVPress is the publishing company for InterVarsity, which is an international evangelical Christian ministry to college students, staff, and faculty. I would assume he is providing the "other" side so to speak.

p.s. this guy is a douche. anyone who's even listened to a bad religion knows they're far more than "angry teenager punk". sure...maybe angry teenagers are most of their fanbase, but that says nothing about them. greg writes some of the most intelligent lyrics in music. it's not just "SCREW THE GOVERNMENT!!!" over and over. he has a platform.

i'm pretty sure that having a phd in evolutionary biology or whatever the heck it was doesn't make you an expert on religion. Generally speaking a Philosophy, Ethics, or maybe even a RELIGION degree would garner more respect from people. Either way, it'll be an interesting read.
