people are saying good things about it...but as with each Korine movie, a few are also saying bad things. if he's nothing else - he's certainly polarizing.

from the brief things i can gather about it it is supposedly a horror film, but a loose one. it seems that the movie is supposed to be some sort of artifact found as a document to these 3 or so people doing insane things. (artifact ala the blair with project)

HATED Gummo, HATED Kids, really disliked Julien Donkey-Boy, LOVED Mister Lonely. I hope this is more in that vein.

hahah...i liked mister lonely too. this is not going to be in that vein though. the closest comparisons i've heard are to Gummo, but less interviewing, and maybe more disturbed/ing? mister lonely was Korine's masterpiece i think. the 1 time he decided to step out and make a (somewhat) Hollywood-style movie. but the man has such a way with finding art and beauty in the dirtiest places (at least to me). he's definitely not for everyone, but i for one am glad he's going in this direction.

Samantha Morton deserved an Oscar nomination for that performance. So fucking good.

Gummo is one of the biggest pieces of cinematic trash i've ever sat through. Nothing redeeming about that piece of shit.

I'm confused. I did a wikipedia search and read up on him and I'm still confused. Anyone want to explain the point of all this? I don't mean that in a dickish way, just curious.

i'll try, but i don't understand the question. you want an explanation of the movie or of harmony korine himself?

there's what i can gather from what people have been saying about the movie Trash Humpers. as for korine - he is an avant garde filmmaker who steps outside the boundaries of traditional filmmaking and for the most part doesn't rely on conventional ways of storytelling to tell stories. art-cinema at it's finest (imo)...he is very polarizing with some people thinking the stuff he does is shit and some lauding it as great. his films are filled with awesome visuals, and sometimes those visuals may seem on the surface to not have a thing to do with the actual "plot". he's a very complex guy, but i'd suggest just renting a couple of his movies (he's only got like 3 that he's directed excluding this new one). start with gummo. and marvel at the way he finds beauty and humor in the most disgusting situations or awful times.

Need to watch gummo while i wait for this. Looks intriguing at the least. But heard some very polarizing reviews (to be expected)
Apparently he was just going to leave the tape of this lying around or send it to police to see what would happen.

This does not look good. Or, it doesn't look like something I'd enjoy...
I loved Gummo, Kids, and Julien Donkey-boy. I saw the preview for this movie a few months ago on a Korine fansite and was not impressed really...I'd still give it a chance though.

Hated gummo also. I really loved kids though. Julien donkey-boy was a tough pill to swallow. Didn't like it either. Mister lonely was good. Korine has said that this isn't a "film." he's so goddamn pretentious. It's showing at a film festival for fuck sake. I wanna chek it out....

How Netflix can ban a film because it's "inappropriate" with some of the stuff they carry (e.g. Shortbus) is laughable.

There are really interesting, atmospheric scenes in this, but they're all foresaken for nonsensical and dumb Korine-esque scenes that have come to be expected from him. The only movie I can truly say is a great picture that he's done was Mister Lonely. I have no idea why he would follow it up with something so uninteresting.

He seems like the kind of guy that's trying to generate distaste. Critical acclaim from Mister Lonely would logically lead to a slap in the face to all those who liked it.

That is the equivalent of me hating Fall Out Boy after everyone else began loving them. It's a shitty reason to make a picture.

I'm not validating it at all, merely imagining his mindset. I haven't seen the film so I won't comment yet, but if it's anything like his past work I'm excited. I personally loved Gummo, and it looks as if this could have a similar feel.

I think you will enjoy it. The film is put together similarly. A lot of the seemingly non-connected scenes in Gummo, such as Mark Gonzales and co. beating the shit out of chairs, etc. remind me of stuff that happened in this movie, including a scene with a little fat kid at a basketball court. I'm sure it's pleasing as a Korine work, but what I loved about Mister Lonely is the fact that it was so unlike something I'd expect from him. It represented all I loved about his personality in film at the same time, however. Trash Humpers just felt... expected. It felt too much as if he were fulfilling an obligation to step out of the box.

Sounds like a completely fair criticism. I was working my way through Korine stuff, and haven't made it to Mister Lonely yet so note that any opinion of Korine so far is based just on Kids and Gummo.

I'm not sure if I consider Kids a Korine film. I mean, I know he wrote the script, but it was so improvised that the script kind of fell by the way side. I feel like that film represents more of a Larry Clark film in it's entirety, though I find it to be quite a watch. Mister Lonely is a very well-made film. What bothered me so much about Gummo is the fact that Korine was so hands-off, and I don't just mean in the "let what happens happen" sort of way. It was widely reported that he barely did anything on set until the last week of shooting. Mister Lonely feels like a director's work. It's so carefully made. I think it was the first film that feels like he genuinely wanted to make, genuinely took his time and put his all into. It's one of my favorite independent films of the 2000's. In a decade filled with some of the worst independent filmmaking in the history of the culture, for someone to make something so original and great is incredibly respectable to me.

Wow, that's a quite a lofty statement regarding Mister Lonely, very excited. You seem pretty knowledgeable, what are some of your other recent favorites? I'm about to go on a downloading spree and could use some suggestions.

I haven't been impressed by many independent films I've seen lately, though The Social Network was the first masterpiece I've seen this decade. To think that a film can be made on a studio budget without watering down it's own brilliance truly astounds me. It has an indie spirit, yet millions of dollars to stand on. If you haven't seen it, there's a pretty decent cam rip out of it now.
Do you like Werner Herzog? If you're not familiar, you should really check out some of his older films. There's a lot of Herzog influence in Korine, and Herzog makes an appearance in a lot of Korine's films now. Even Dwarfs Started Small is a perfect example. Fitzcarraldo is also a film to be seen. And the making-of documentary is just as much an experience. Herzog actually dragged a boat up a mountain shooting a movie about it.
I completely forgot about this; I still need to watch it. I just looked for it and couldn't find anything. I probably should've seen this movie by now.
Edit: I watched Kids again a few days ago. "Mmm, butterscotch yo"

It's up on Demonoid. I got it there and it only took about 30 minutes to download. If you don't have demonoid, I can shoot you an invite.
Is it safe? I'm kind of iffy about downloading movies on my laptop cuz it's still pretty new.
