I’ve been playing dead like my body is a hospice bed.
All the things I’ve said were coded and painted red.
With some sick kind of cursive,
in some slanted kind of sick,
I’ve been playing dead.

Walking like a marching band,
Marching like a working man,
I’ve been playing dead.

Please, remove my skin before I am embalmed in it.
Carve out my thoughts and burn them.
Put the ashes in a jar marked, “Dissolves in Martyr”,
And store it on a shelf labeled “Danger: Combustible and Prone to Fire.”

I know I looked inhabited, my words true and meditated, but I was really just reacting.
I was playing dead.
