View Full Version : music industry
i eventually want to work in the music industry but i was wondering if someone could clear somethings up for me.
i know that bands have like a tour manager that travels on tour with them and then they have like a band manager who i think sets up tours and interviews? i'm not really sure...
i've been looking this stuff online and i read that there's a band manager and band agent? what would be the difference between them? or is that not that common to have both...
what would be their jobs as a band manager or an agent?
also what majors should i choose for college if i want to do something like this?
thanks

A lot of colleges have a music business/industry major.

you could go to a college that specializes in music.
i'm going to mcnally smith college of music right now majoring in music business. i eventually want to get into band management, specifically tour managing.
it's a great school if you're looking to get into the industry. they offer performance majors in any instrument, business majors, production, composition... and the staff is incredibly experienced.
i definitely encourage you to check it out

it depends on what program you're going into. like if you want to go for a performance major you have to try out on your instrument after you finish the application. and if you want to go for production you need to submit a demo of something you've helped record.
the business program wasn't hard to get into. the essays on the application were actually fun to do as apposed to essays for university colleges since they revolved around music. as long as you have semi-decent grades you should have no problems. they're really good about helping you through the application process as well

Make sure you really look into the career to see if it's something you'd like to be doing for the rest of your life. For example, if you want to be a manager of a band, be prepared to be on tour with the band and what negatives/positives that brings, like the family aspect.

How do you like the business program, like the positives and negatives? I'm thinking of majoring in music business or production when I go to college. Also I've never heard of this college so thanks for mentioning it.

yeahh i've thought about it alot.
well i don't want to be like on the road. maybe like a band manger not a tour manager. or a booking agent. i'm not really sure yet. just not something where i'll be on the road with the band

no problem!
this is my first semester and so far i'm really liking it and learning a ton. this semester my classes are business communications(which is a mix between a public speaking class and electronic communication such as formating business emails and memos. it's a great class and it's helped a lot so far with my communication skills) writing and research skills(which is pretty much how it sounds) music business history, music economics(one of the most informative classes i've ever taken. anyone looking to get into any aspect of the industry, even as a performer should definitely take this class) and history of american popular music.
all of the teachers have a ton of experience and have either been in successful touring bands, worked with successful bands, owned their own management or production companies, etc. it's like an overload of information

Wow that sounds awesome! Yeah, I'm definitely going to be looking at this school then. It seems like they are going to be teaching a ton about the music business. Good luck and thanks again!

anyone know anything about them?
also today i met with this guy at this place and they help you with the application process and stuff like that and he told me that i should major in music and then minor in business and that that would be the same as majoring in music industry... would i be learning the same kinds of things by doing that?

I'm also wanting to work in the music industry. I would say Belmont is one of the best choices. That's the one that I am currently looking at.
