The only thing I'm looking forward to in this is Jackie Earl Haley's performance as Freddy. Hopefully he doesn't disappoint.

Bay's name in the trailer pretty much sums up what a piece of shit this is going to be. Maybe Englund could of saved it, but I doubt it.

It does actually seem like it could be fairly decent as far as the remakes are concerned. However, I have severe doubts about anyone pulling it off besides Englund. Haley's face is so caved in and narrow at the chin and mouth that he looks absolutely ridiculous as Freddy. That last shot looks like he's Smiegal lol

No, it's supposed to look more realistic as far as burns are concerned. The reason why he seems less exaggerated is to add humanity to the character, to make him darker and more tormented then before. That's way they chose to delve deeper into his back story.
I think Haley will do great in the part. He is such an under rated character actor. Watchmen may have been a shit adaptation but at least Haley got well deserved attention because of the brilliance he portrayed his character with.

After seeing the trailer, I feel the movie has potential, however I'm not digging the super dark lighting, if it wasn't for the appearance of Kruger, it could be confused with any other modern horror movie trailer.

the synopsis is evidence enough why this remake will suck ugh
from Screenrant
"After being burned alive by a mob of angry parents, a pre-school gardener/caretaker named Freddy returns for revenge against the children, now 18 years old, that accused him of sexual abuse. But was Freddy a child molester or was he falsely accused? This is the central question and main addition to the film’s plot. Freddy doesn’t have many lines, but that isn’t all that surprising considering that the film’s producers have said the character doesn’t joke around."

I'll pass. The original was low budget and gritty. This is a typical major studio remake that will simply suck cock. If they got some hip indie director to do it I would at least be more intrigued by the idea. General audiences will eat it up though. Smart money making move I suppose.

Edit: Wow, I just read that they contracted Jackie Earl Haley for three films. I didn't know that. I mean, I'm not surprised by the prospect of sequels or anything in this day and age...I guess it's just the realization of "oh good, there's going to be three of these" for yet another rehashed franchise.

I read the screenplay. Hearing that the screenplay only had one other draft and that some of the scenes that appeared in the copy I had appear in the trailer, I would say that this film will in no way make Freddy a sympathetic character. Not going to praise this remake or anything, but he's portrayed as much as he was in the originals: an evil bastard. The one thing I hope is that they didn't take out the few sick 'jokes' that he had in it.
P.S. Freddy looks like a duck.

** A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET remake: Director Sam Bayer told /Film that he will not be returning to the franchise. "I really hope the film does well. I will not be involved in a sequel...I don’t want to have my next movie be a horror movie. I'm already looking at stuff and I think I'm probably going to do a- it might be an action movie, or there’s a comic book they want to make into a film I’m very attracted to. But I think I'm going to move on and let someone else handle the next one, and it'll be great." Jackie Earle Haley (Freddy Krueger) and Rooney Mara (Nancy Thompson) are both signed on for a sequel if one were to get greenlit. (thanks to Bloody-Disgusting.com)

Yeah, the SLANT (http://www.slantmagazine.com/film/review/a-nightmare-on-elm-street/4794) review said that they fucking ripped straight from the original.
Rather than add to that memorable canon of images, all visions of helplessness, this film simply replicates them—and poorly so.Also:
... he [Samuel Bayer] settles for delivering the cheapest, lamest, and most unoriginal of thrills, and in so doing accomplishes something unlikely: making one hanker for the '80s and the beauty of analogue-age special effects.
I do believe it's probably the best remake of the recent batch, but it's clearly not the flick to make the statement that these are good ideas. That film has yet to be made and probably won't be.

they basically did. i went home and watched the original again and most of your scenes were updated versions of the same scene.
freddy's hand coming out of the bathtub while nancy is in it, her dead friend in a body bag, boiler room scenes, etc.

Did they try and make you feel sorry for him? I feel like that's what the fucking movie industry is trying to do to these psychopaths and it is the worst aspect of the remakes. And their decision to make him a kid fucker instead of a kid killer is kind of odd, especially b/c of America's sensitivity to that type of shit these days.

I'm going to a midnight screening for this tonight. Mainly because I just love going to the movies at that time and I'll go for anything I have at least some interest in seeing right away.
Going to the midnight screening as well, as I've said before I'm going in with a positive mindset. This is one franchise that I feel needs to be remade (scary Freddy > comedic Freddy)
I won't see it until I hear all of your thoughts on it.

Yes and no. I fucking loathe remakes and most of the time, sequels, but another part of me doesn't care how badly they fuck it up...if it means that Freddy Kreuger, Jason, Mike Myers, Indiana Jones, Rocky, The Ghostbusters stay apart of my life forever, then bring it.

I actually thought I would like it too, at least for the entertainment value. I absolutely love the original and had low expectations, so all it had to do was keep me interested, and it failed at that.
Edit: I just read Full Effect's review. Spot on with the film's problems. No character development, no emotion, anti-climactic, etc. That's really what made it boring. It's a shame, with a few changes, a remake with this kind of tone (well, what they were trying to go for) could have worked.

While I honestly disagree with you on most of this review there are two issues that I will point out.
1. I completely disagree that the micro-naps thing was over done. I have always been a huge Nightmare on Elm Street fan, but my one beef with the whole franchise was that characters always "happen to be asleep" out of nowhere in scenarios when they shouldn't be. This movie at least tries to explain that major fault that the original film had and you take issue with it?
2. Why does it matter that Freddy curses? He's one of the only iconic horror characters that can actually speak, was burned alive and murders kids in their dreams... but he shouldn't curse? haha. you're kidding right? jackie earl haley's dialogue was the best part of the whole film.

I'm so glad I'm not the only person who hates this. I guess it's alright sometimes, if it really makes sense in the context of the story, but most of the time it's just a cheap narrative trick to make the story "deeper" or make some lame point.
I think that's part of the reason I loved The Joker in Nolan's "The Dark Knight." There's no understanding or sympathizing with him. Nobody knows if the stories he tells are true. He's just an evil fucking sociopath and that's it. It made him so much more sinister.

The fact that they made him a fucking pedophile took this movie from bad to damn near unwatchable. I really can't fathom why they thought that was a good idea.
I've never seen a movie with as many 'cheap scares.' I swear. Literally every time they wanted to get a rise, it wasn't bc something was fucked up or anything like that, it was him flashing on screen for a split second and them making that loud shriek noise.
All the flashbacks to the daycare were stupid. The deaths were unoriginal and unimaginative. The acting by that first fucking gnome that was obsessed with blondie literally had me laughing in my seat and I was getting funny looks from people.
I 100% agree about Freddy cussing, too. So pointless and out of place. Between the script and delivery, makeup, and voice, Haley's performance was the worst part of the movie.
None of that prly makes sense but I'm on my phone and don't want to reread it all.

My main issue was Freddy's makeup. He didn't look scary, just gross.
The pedophile spin didn't bother me... truthfully I always assumed Freddy was both a child killer and a pedo to begin with.
The flashbacks were great I thought. It made it all more disturbing.
I agree that the chick playing Nancy couldn't have been more dull. It was only for like 10 seconds near the end where I even thought for a moment "okay, this is how Nancy should be played".

Unfortunately I do, and as I was reading your post prior to me seeing it, I was surprised to see you condemn Haley as the worst part of the film. Watching him in Little Children and seeing the earlier trailers had me thinking he could nail it. Then I saw then film and was not only shocked to see Haley's performance, but astounded as to how boring it was as a whole. And for the record, I'm all for remakes reworking the story, but a Freddie as a pedo is just fucking ridiculous. Hell, if you do turn him from murderer to pedophile I want to at least get the sense that he might actually rape someone and not just give that to us as a reason to hate him.

In my opinion, Quentin was the only good character. He was a wuss in the beginning, with his father and with Nancy. But in the end, he let go of those reservations more. That was actual dialogue from the movie during the only moment we really get to know Quentin and Nancy. I swear even New Line knew this was bad product, hence the release shift to the week before Iron Man 2 comes out. I wish Clancy Brown was given more of a role, he was the best part of the film.

Well I watched the original again a few days ago because I was so excited to see the new one, and I don't think that was a good idea because it made everything else in the remake seem far worse. It's not the worst movie ever or anything, but it's very disappointing.
Well nothing ever lives up to the original. I didnt expect it to be as good as it but I'm gonna check it out anyways

So based on what everyone has said in here thus far...Alvin and the Chipmunks 2 would be a better watch?

Go watch How to Train Your Dragon. Now that was stellar and so worth the money.

Hurry up and catch it in 3D before it's gone. Best movie of the year, and what everyone should be going to see right now.

My boyfriend said it was really good.

Hah wow
The 'A Nightmare on Elmstreet' movies are his favorite and he usually has pretty good taste. So I'm going to a) stay with him, b) advise him not to jump off a bridge and c) lmao

You haven't seen Casino Royale? That's one that you should honestly see. Not the 1960's peter sellers but the recent one.

I think they should have just left the original Nightmare on Elm Street as is.
