Still need to build the Olympic village, an aquatics center, and a $366 million temporary Olympic stadium for the opening and closing ceremonies. Not to mention a bunch of temporary venues in many of the city's parks

http://www.chicago2016.org/our-plan/proposed-venues.aspx

I'm not saying it could not /should not be done just saying alot of money would have to be spent on temporary structures

saysmydoctor
09/28/09, 03:08 PM
Didn't China gross about $88 billion when they hosted? Olympics are pretty lucrative.

The fight is between Rio and Chicago, I think. Rio would just be a beautiful venue.

I want to see Tiger dominate in 2016.
I always wondered why Golf wasn't an olympic sport.

See...Brazil makes sense to get it since they will already have a decent portion of the infrastructure in place as a result of the World Cup to handle lots of people. Plus, after watching that video, if I were an athlete, I'd MUCH rather it be in Rio...a private beach just for the athletes

But it'd be cool to have it in Chicago since it isn't too far away and I could go watch
I guess the Obamas are lobbying the Olympic commitee really hard for Chi Town.
as is Dwayne Wade

saysmydoctor
09/28/09, 03:38 PM
Madrid can make a better argument than Brazil, because 3/4's of their planned Olympic infrastructure is already built or under construction

I can't find the video but i guess there's an ad out there with chicagoans for rio.

Went with Chi-town just because I was born there. But I think it would be cool if a country like Brazil or Japan got it.

haha...you'd be surprised how much sway a guy like Wade or Kobe or Lebron has internationally in terms of sports...if you had given those Chinese fans the choice between Kobe or Obama, I'd be 80% would have chose Kobe

Rio would be pretty neat. It would be cool to see a South American Olympics and based on the video above, would be beautiful.

If baseball was still an Olympic sport, I would have gone with Chicago. Olympic baseball at Wrigley would have been sweet.

:-| The Vikings beat two shit teams, and were a miracle pass away from losing to the Niners.

The Bears had to play at Lambeau opening night, the Super Bowl Champs at home, and then travel up to one of the toughest environments to play in the NFL. 2-1 is pretty damn good considering all that.

i went with rio for whatever reasons, but the main one being i just don't want it to be chicago. i want to live there in a few years, and i bet that would drive up cost of living in a few ways. maybe i'm totally off base, but it seems like that could change a lot, and in some instances in undesirable ways.

You also need to consider how much money you could make renting out your place when the Olympics come to town...

If you're that worried about cost of living, you shouldn't be moving to Chicago in the first place.

i'm worried about cost of living anywhere, no matter what. what i was trying to get across though is that it could drive up cost of living over something i don't really care about. the olympics are fun, but i don't care that much. plain and simple.

4 times is a lot more than most other countries, and the last one was in 1996, not too long ago. bud.

09/29/09, 10:32 AM
The Olympics never really go to who deserves. I think China is the first one in a while who actually deserved it. I remember when they took the anniversary of the Olympics creation from Greece. That was the moment I lost faith in the IOC. Not to say they aren't a corrupt group of people already.

Also, the US has hosted the Olympics (Winter and Summer combined) eight times, not six.

Your point was the # of times they've had it, not how recently.
Also, when account for land/population/# of medals it's not that disproportionate.

I don't even want them in Chicago and I live here.

MyWorldEntire
09/29/09, 02:49 PM
I understand why people wouldn't want the hassles and potential taxes they would have to pay for the event. But being able to host something as remarkable as the Olympics is an opportunity you don't pass up.

Tokyo out in round 2.

so the only thing that matters is that the South American region supports USA's World Cup Bid in 2018 or 2022. I hope this means Spain doesn't get any sympathy for 2018 either. England deserves it.
