i wrote this one this morning when i woke up. anyway, wanted to know what you guys think.
“Passing Headlights”
So do we have the right to name this town after ourselves?
A single cigarette’s red glow, is the only light inside
And outside the lamps hang like traitors, deserving to die
So we speed up as the car starts to shake
(One sharp turn could end this)
But we’ve heard rumors of escape
So we spread the glass across the pavement
Like diamonds on black velvet
And sympathies can warm us to sleep
But I will be kept awake
By the headlights passing in the street
One by one, by one thousand they pass
[Chorus]
Look through the trees
To an empty discarded street
Where I paced my thoughts out
And then left them dangling over the bridge to drown
The sidewalk led nowhere
The windshield blades cut through rain
as the wind pushed us closer to the curb
I’ll let the breeze blow me away from the empty words
Keeping me from sleep
And as the headlights approached
I knew it was time to step out into the street
One by one, by one thousand they pass
[Repeat chorus]
Close our eyes as we let the memory forget itself
I see love mirrored in a setting sun
Your hands wrapping around mine
We come undone
I see love mirrored in a setting sun (I saw the cliff approaching)
Your hands wrapping around mine (I saw the cliff approaching)
Let me come undone (but I kept silent…)
[Repeat chorus]
One by one, by one more time
(I swear, I saw this coming all along)
