Sony press conference news so far, PS3 controller news!

Here's some quick points i'm updating throughout the show:

- Playable PS3 at E3 with lots of demo booths
- no controller announcement yet
- All PS3 ship with hard drive
- boring stuff on PS2 and PSP
- Grand Turismo HD looked a little unimpressive (Sony claims that it has only been worked on for a couple of weeks and mostly just uses grand turismo 4 upgraded to high def for the demo)
- Free online basic activities (chat, voice message, etc etc)
- Talks about microtransactions, PS3 card you can buy at stores to buy stuff online. Shows online menu with music to buy and a program called Sing Star.
- so far, all of the controllers that are being used have been (what looked like) the dual shock PS2 controllers
- game demos are coming slowly, nothing mind blowing yet
- PS3 will be able to function with psp for certain game elements (they used a demo where you can use your PSP as a rear-view mirror when playing a racing game for ps3)
- first impressive demo is a game called heavenly sword (i think) that has a god of war type play with impressive graphics. this was playable, by the way.
- a montage of demos follow, some may be CGI or pre-rendered, others look to be in game. no real gameplay however, but most of the titles are new
- next is a very impressive game called eight days however again could be CGI or pre-rendered. it's third person shooter with some awesome effects (diving through windows, over cars, seems to be a mob based game) if it is in game, shows a hud but nothing is confermed
- playable resistance fall of man game that was an impressive first person shooter.
- "ending playable section of presentation"
- started with EA games for next segment - new abilities of ps3 for player movement, crowd, etc. Showed a very impressive demo with tiger woods and the realistic facial expressions and reactions in real time controlled by a developer
- Montage of unplayable games including lots of new ones so far
- MGS4 demo is AWESOME
- FFXIII and FF Versus trailers and teasers are good


- PLAYSTATION CONTROLLER IS A SILVER DUAL SHOCK. NO BOOMERANG. Wireless.
- PS3 controller has motion sensor and can detect lateral movement with game support. Similar to Wii controller functionality (but not as good, so stop crying nintendo people)


-They are showing a demo using the controller to controll a planes pitch and yaw with great graphics, impressive indeed! However, i don't think how the controller can tell where your pointing on screen.

New Controller (I think this is the official picture, i'm kind of disappointed in the joysticks having no depth to them, for ps2 i remember my thumbs getting sore after a while, but anyway. The R2 and L2 buttons are triggers, if you didn't notice that, as well as what looks to be a On/Off button similar to the 360's controller in the middle)

The wii sensor is only for the 360 degree FHC remote that the PS3 doesn't have. The nunchuk ATTACHMENT is what the PS3 controller can do. So you guys gotta get some things clear first before spouting off what you think you know.

They introduced a gamer card type thing you had to buy later in the show, I wasen't really paying attention at the time so I can't say for sure, but I think you'll end up needing that to play games.

Yeah that is what it means, but its not motion sensing, its very limited in what it can do. Like I said, it's the same tech that the GBA used in games.

Oh yes, yes the Wii mote does. And there is a good chance it's not just rumble. Like a week ago nintendo confirmed they would have it, and they didn't previously for battery life. Thought they didn't want to go into details since it's kind of under wraps, although I think the speaker that allows for audio force feedback on the controller is also going to be the 2nd part of it. So the Wii mote has rumble and audio feedback. Suck on that sony.

Since the $500 version won't have HDMI, what's the point in having a blu-ray player it if won't be able to produce a high definition picture? (I know you can get HD through component, but once movie studios start enforcing the ICT Flag, you will be required to have a HDMI/DVI cable to get a full scale HD picture from both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD players)

SCEE vice president Phil Harrison recently spoke with the Australian Financial Review. He revealed to the publication that Sony is currently investigating the use of motion sensing technology for their next-generation console. Furthermore, the motion sensing digital camera, EyeToy, and its associated games have actually been used as a preliminary test for the technology. Most would probably agree that Sony's early test was a success -- certainly sales of the EyeToy in Europe would seem to indicate that.

"EyeToy was a signpost for things in the future. If you can attach very high-resolution, low-cost video cameras you can deduce some quite interesting things about their users. We'll be able to extrapolate eye movement and gestural recognition, more complicated finger movement, and the logical next step of that is to deduce from a person's facial expression and demeanour what their emotion state is," said Mr. Harrison.

Harrison then went on to discuss even cooler possibilities, such as new menu systems that could be controlled by gamers simply waving a hand in a certain direction. He compared it to the futuristic computer database used by Tom Cruise in the film Minority Report. Of course, just because Sony is working on these features doesn't mean they're a lock for the PS3. If I were buying a PS3, I'd be so happy they didn't change the controller. The Dual Shock controller has worked for years, so why change it? But i dont know how you can make that much like you people are saying. If I worked 25 hours a week at 7.45 Ill make about 160 a week. It would take me about 4 weeks to have anough money for a system and a game. That's if I didn't save any of it, spend any on gas or food or doing anything. I would have to use every last penny. Sorry, but the avg kid in HS or college faces this same problem. Those who are saying its not a issue either are lucky and have a good job or don't have money issues. Although if you take a look, our country does. Especially college kids who have the most cases of debt in the country..
