As part of our ABSOLUTExclusive program you can now download the first single, "The Compromise," off of The Format (http://www.absolutepunk.net/theformat)'s new album Dog Problems on the band's AP.net profile (http://www.absolutepunk.net/theformat). Their new album hits stores July 11th (http://www.absolutepunk.net/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=605&c=3) and is available for a cheap pre-order on their website (http://www.theformat.com). I'll review this album closer to the release date but so far it's my favorite release of 2006.

sooooo good
i don't know, i never really fell that crazy for the format... i mean On Your Porch is such an amazing song it is ridiculous, but other than that, i guess they are just too poppy for me so i never got into them so much... but i also like Let's Make This Moment a Crime.
oh and i was in the lineup for two shows they were opening for, so i missed them live twice, so that might have something to do with it... anyways i'm looking forward to this album from them.

Actually, I didn't like it as much as I thought I would. This is probably going to end up being one of my least favorite songs on the album.

It seems kind of fuzzy? I was voting/hoping for Time Bomb to be the single.

I'm pretty sure this is the single. And it's fuzzy because it's not cd quality.

192 is CD Quality to me.320 is as close to CD quality as you'll get. 192 to 224 is even a big gap if you listen to a lot of music. If you're just a casual listener, it doesn't matter, but there's a reason I rip everything at 224 VBR or higher. The higher bitrates also handle higher volumes better obviously. I loved the acoustic version of "The Compromise" but I think the full-band version lacks something on first listen. I'm not sure if it's actually the quality of the song or the mixing, but I don't like how faded into the background the vocals are. I'm going to love Dog Problems because The Format can do no wrong in my eyes. I just want to see them live for once.
i liked the acoustic version. i'll see if i like this one later.

Fuck yes. I don't understand how anyone could dislike The Format. I've had more than a few people ask who they were when they've been hanging out while I was playing Interventions & Lullabies, all of whom have gone out to purchase the album. Thanks for this Jason.

Great song. Great to finally hear the album version. Very warm, catchy song. It's like a song you would want to hear on a rainny day if you wanted to feel less despressed.

How is a m4a file compared to something at a 320 bitrate or above.
Love it. The Format are so awesome.

What label are they on, by the way?
their own...
"After much discussion and debate we have decided to release the album ourselves on our own imprint called The Vanity Label. This has mostly come from looking out at the crowd every night and realizing that what we’ve built has not come from what major labels traditionally use to “break bands”. We don’t have a video on MTV, we haven’t really had any press and we haven’t been on the radio outside of Arizona. But still you’ve come to this section of the site to read about the new album. So, we’ve set up distribution with Sony/BMG and are going to take this on ourselves. We’re spending our own money to put the record in the same stores you would normally see it, we’re making a video and have hired publicity…basically everything you would expect, except that we are now able to do things exactly the way we want to do them. We’ll start a presale for the album in the next couple of weeks through the merch store. Dog Problems will also be very easy to get online because we’ll have it available to download directly from our site for $7.99 (it will also be on iTunes and places like that). "
WTF, this is a different version from the one I heard on their Myspace or whatever! I guess that was just a demo, this is soo much better.
So far I prefer the acoustic version, hopefully that will change and this will grow on me. Also I agree the vocals sound distant. Oh well I'm sure I'll love it, I have nearly every other song they've released.

its definitely good, as was their old album, as will their new album be... but to say that the album will make a statement to the industry is to put it on a really really high level. i can't seem to think that this album will have that much of an impact. top 10 album, for sure....but that's about it.

Vanity Records - their own little imprint of Nettwerk Records (Sony/BMG distro).

I agree with all of this.
The vocals are not faded into the background at all on the album, I don't know what stereo you're playing this on or anything - but the vocals are very prominant on the CD. In fact, the vocal levels are extremely high now that I think about it.

The band is self-releasing a CD, no A&R, no radio department, no huge budget behind them. They're doing it by themselves. That's what I meant by my comment.

i agree. they've been up there with sublime and jack johnson for my favorite people to listen to on summer days. Anyone else have suggestions for other bands that are good to drink and sit by the pool to?

i like everything about this new version except for the vocals, they sound super drowned out by the music at some points and the guys voice was probably my favourite part about the format. it is still fantastic, and i hope its just the quality of the mp3 but the vocals sound really distant at points and i hate that a lot in album mixes.

I agree with you on liking the acoustic version better. I enjoy The Format a bunch, but I don't really like the synth being so high and prominent and there seems to be a lot of distortion. Shitty computer speakers though, so that could have an influence. I loved how on Interventions the acoustic guitar was the focal point of the songs for the most part, it doesn't seem to be so on this song.
However, I'm sure I'll love Dog Problems as well. Pick Me Up was probably my favorite song on the acoustic EP, so I hope I like the CD of that better.

Im so glad the drums dont sound as fake as the last record.
good song.
how does the last cd's drums sound fake? it's one of the most natural recordings i've heard in a long time, aside from the new limbeck album or the new ryan adams stuff ... the beginning of the first single is obviously covered with reverb, and the snare might be replaced in that song, but other than that, the album sounds like a straight up mic'd drum kit.
of course, i could be wrong :P
in any case, this band is really great. great melody, great guitar tones, just great songs.

Thanks for making this single available -- however, the recording sounds very distorted. Was this a rip from a pre-mastered version or did somebody rip this song incorrectly?
This song is really catchy after a few plays. I really like Time Bomb, too.
