Lights – The Listening
Record Label: Doghouse / Underground Operations Records
Release Date: October 6, 2009
Two things in my life are constants: my physique and its ability to attract only the tastiest of treats. But now black is white. Dunks are penny loafers. Firm gluts are honey-baked hams. This Lights character has thrown me for a loop. Her mask-like use of eyeliner and OMG love of both video games and comic books means that I’m not exactly sure when the golden spaceship left Earth. DeadKidSeanJohn hates her. IRTomDelonge loves her. The Listening is girltronica, and since I am girltronica’s appointed leader, this had to be it. My muscles pulsed in the glimmering sun as I acquired The Listening during an otherwise normal mid-afternoon tanning/Ice Cream Sundae (that’s a sexual position, idiot) session. “Finally, some excitement,” I said as the Banana split (two coins in the Wowee Donation Box, please). But no, just hold on a second, is our e-sausage fest really this bamboozled?
The damn baby voice; it haunts me. “Saviour” is probably the only song worthy of discussion because it’s the exception and rule. An interesting electronic beat is proof perfect of Lights’ ability to craft beats that burrow into our under-engaged brains. It’s electronic pop at its most simple and pure. And it’s certainly music made to be girl-led, just not this girl. Lights’ lyrics (“It will never change / If you want it to stay the same / I really hate it / But I know it’s really hard to choose if you're chained”) smell like my sister’s trapper keeper. Oh, and the BABY voice.
I’ve been racking my brain to think of a certain One-Hit Wonder from the late 90’s that is clearly the inspiration for “Saviour,” but that song’s rapid-fire lyrics and strangely cute electronics were too forgettable for my over-huffed memory banks. So basically this paragraph is a complete waste of your time. Diana something? Donna? That’ll be $9.50.
“Drive My Soul” has the same beat and dark vibe as its brethren, kind of like the scary Mary Kate and Ashley Detective home videos (i.e. when the “haunted house” was just home to a smoking hot beekeeper!). It’s just impossible to accept these songs as soul-bearing or deep or whatever effect Lights was looking for. There’s no drama in her panged vocal wails because each one is so heavily processed and, you know, those pesky word thingys just aren’t worth a damn. I have no doubt that she’s “been through stuff!”, because all musicians are f**king ridiculous and insane, but there’s a complete failure on The Listening when it comes to making such stories relatable. This is 2009’s vaguest record.
At least the courting period for Lights is short. One song from The Listening, picked at random, will tell you whether you should feel guilty about stealing or not. Maybe (and I’ve never stressed the word “maybe” harder in my life), if the first song is “Lions!”, you’ll have a dilemma. Its chorus sounds like the others and her voice is especially baby-like (especially for a song with an exclamation point), but the spacey beats and stuttering drums crap over most of The Listening’s filler. However, the downfall experienced after stumbling upon a song like Britney Spears reject “Second Go” is unforgivable. You might just kill yourself. IRTHETOMDELONGE, we’ll miss you man.
Recommended If You Like: Vanessazzz Carltonzzz, Donna?, Diane?, Britney Spears, hating me

i like her voice a lot but that's about it. i think the scores are too low, but i agree that this album is really nothing special when it comes to lyrics, musicianship, and creativity. i will still probably listen to this once in a while. i've listened to it while doing homework a couple times and it was good enough for that.

Thank God. All I ever usually see about her is endless amount of praise about how 'amazing' she is. I tried to give it a chance, but it just wasn't doing it for me. Bottom line: if she wasn't hot, nobody would care as much as they do.

Well. This was an interesting review.
I really liked her stuff coming into this record, and I enjoyed Saviour and The Listening, but this record was a major let down for me. First of all, all of the songs from the EP? On it. That was a problem. Then, the rest of the songs just don't get there, they seem filler, with the exception of Pretend, which I think is a great song. Her voice? Totally hated it at first. It grew on me. But...
She's certainly not for everyone. That said, I think this review was mostly right.
She's not attractive at all.

I agree with this. Also, the remix to Pretend is great as well. This album has no last ing value whatsoever and I'm bummed since I was really looking forward to it.

Personally, I loved songs like Ice, Savior, and The Listening and was extremely excited for this album, but I was sadly disappointed. Those are the only decent songs.
She's damn beautiful(probably not without makeup but what the hell, hopefully I'll never see that) her music does blow though...
Agreed. If she wasn't all made up she'd just be a decent looking girl. But that's the same way with most celebrities I suppose (not that I'm calling her a celebrity). It makes me wonder how much of her popularity is due to the way she looks.
I hate that I'm talking about the way someone looks like this but oh well, it's the internet.

Can't get past her vocals to even begin to consider this.
Great review, I personally really like her voice. But this whole elctronica band she has going doesn't do much for me, except for "Ice" I can't help but kinda like it.
I'll admit it. I really like the record, and I buy into everything about her. Lame? I don't know, but I do like it a lot.

1. she is so hot. 2. album is not bad at all this review is pure shit. 3. Her brand of music yes is slower and cheese at times, but is way better than half this shit out there. 4. Savior is far from the only song worth mentioning. 5. This is by far not my favorite music, but it's not worth that low score at all. it's worth checking out.

Well, if you're comparing it to other pop albums, then I implore you, look elsewhere for good pop! Sometimes it's right in front of your eyes (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=177392). Pop is one of the most abundant music genres now, you just have to look harder! This stuff is contrived, Lights is only making baby steps. She will eventually be able to craft an album's worth of good songs.

I enjoy the self-titled for those days I feel like listening to whatever the musical equivalent is to a "chick flick" but there's no longevity there especially in terms of lyrics. Her voice can come across as soothing but only in small doses. I'm ambivalent.

That's harsh, and the score is way too low. It's a decent album
I think she's lovely and this is a bit too much filler. But I think her recorded and her live are two totally different things since on record she seems to have lots of effects on her vocals though live it seems pure and shes really good. So it might not seem great on record but this stuff will come across really good live.
This review was well written, but totally wrong.
This CD is basically great, i feel like she has passion for what she's doing. I mean she's hot, and that may affect my opinion a little bit, but this shit is gold. It's simple synth pop songs. I hardly think anyone thinks she's a music god, but this CD is a great listen. And Lions is one of the best songs off of it, i love her voice. It's soft and relaxing.
I mean she's not imogen heap, but she's 10x better than owl shitty.

I don't really get the appeal, but I'm willing to listen/learn to like if so should happen.
And, in reference to the Taylor thread, Tristan moved it to "Music," which is fitting, but a lot of people said the same thing as you, with not being able to find it and all.

I really like Lights...but I have to agree this album is not her strongest effort. I thought for sure that she'd release a full length that would be even better than the EP, which I enjoyed a lot.
It's all good though...she plays WoW and thus is cool in my book.

After seeing her live, I got into this CD a lot more. She puts on a really good show too. Covered Phil Collins' "In The Air Tonight" as an encore.

Maybe if AP reviews her next record.. I think someone did Fearless so it's possible they review it. I just don't know if many see me as the poster boy fan of Taylor on this site or not, haha.
you most definitely are the AP fanboy for Taylor, no question there

Any suggestions for pop?? I'm not really into pop but i like the whole lady gaga thing.
If you're going pop territory.....
Justin Timberlake made two SOLID pop albums (and is bound to make more)
Anything by the Cars
Newer Motion City Soundtrack (more pop territory on later albums)
Mates of State I think has made some good pop in it
The Postal Service's Give Up is excellent
Zolof the Rock and Roll destroyer (pretty much anything by them)
Locksley
Scissors for Lefty
All time Low is more "pop punk (haha bullshit)" but their latest album is a very well done pop rock album.
Start with that, you'll enjoy it.

I don't think that most people who like her who give a shit about her if she wasn't cute and didn't like video games and comics. Just sayin.

anyone else get confused that there are two bands/artists named Lights both featuring female vocals?
I listened to Lights - Rites thinking it was this record.. I have now listened to both and I dig Lights(from Brooklyn) more so than this one. I suggest you maybe check it out too.
I guess it was worth one full listen... but nothing special! Spot on review.

Mannnn I started an official thread and post pictures as soon as I find new ones! I've also gotten into at least 3 arguments with people on here, Jason included, on her musical merits. Literally, the Babe Thread was fed up with me posting Taylor so much, so I had to take it to another thread. What more can I do?! Seriously, one scroll through http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=1249762 and I think you'll find me deserving. I feel like I'm running for student council or something, haha.

I don't really get the appeal, but I'm willing to listen/learn to like if so should happen.
And, in reference to the Taylor thread, Tristan moved it to "Music," which is fitting, but a lot of people said the same thing as you, with not being able to find it and all.
http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=1249762
There it is, in case you're interested. I take it you're not a Taylor fan though, if I remember correctly.

And wtf is with her hair, it's parted like next to her ear on that picture on the first page.

God. I just went to her myspace out of curiosity. Her voice is embarrassing.
Such a cheesy album.
I love it. Also, her music videos are awesome.
So basically I've come to the conclusion that Light's is simply a fictitious character made up by the record industry to sell records to all us music nerds. She's just to damn hot.
I find this review to be incredibly biased. I'm not disagreeing with all that's written here (although I disagree with the review in general), but the immature tone that is carried throughout makes it hard for me to take this seriously, and seems below Absolutepunk's standards.

Actually, untrue. Her natural singing voice is fantastic, she just under-utilizes it. She has an incredible tone and range when she sings normally.

well, she's decent, she could be a great womanly singer like feist or cat power, but she kind of chooses to sing in an annoying pitch

I won't disagree that the effects used on her vocals and the baby voice really distract, but c'mon. I've heard her live, and she fucking kills it, pulls out this wonderful voice that I know a lot of people would be jealous to have.
The EP is awesome. This is cool....not great but it's just nice music that doesn't require my thinking.

You're an idiot she's amazing. Musicianship's good there's banjo's, synth's, keyboards, piano, guitars and sick beats. Lyrics are good, Lions! is an exception cause it's about wow but still has substance personally and its still a rad tune. Saviour is pretty deep, there biblical references in there (Mark6:11). She's also really really hot which adds.

YOU ARE ONE FUNNY MAN MISTER SOLOMAN
I know I'm a little late. I've read this review a few times, but I cannot tell you how frustrating it is to read, page by page, people complimenting Blake on an outrageously unfair review. It kills me to hear that people won't even check out an album just because of a reviewer that couldn't take time to write the review a little more seriously.
The first thing that got me ticked was the over-exaggeration of a "baby voice." Somebody listen to Drive My Soul (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ocJir0DD3E) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ocJir0DD3E) and tell me to my face that it sounds baby-ish, because I will swear on my grave that her voice in there sounds nothing like a baby.
The second thing that got me was the "It’s just impossible to accept these songs as soul-bearing or deep." Before I even stumbled upon absolute punk, or even knew much about music, some friend sent me a link to one of her songs. I don't know about you, but songs from her have gotten me through tough times, sad times. If that's not enough soul for you, then you must be a ginger.
I'm just saying, to anyone, maybe even the one or two people who bother to read this reply, that this album is worth getting. If it means just making a YouTube playlist of her songs, or the many of you who download songs from the internet in a not-so legal process, then go for it anyway. But seriously, don't even do that, Lights is a great, talented artist, and the album is worth buying.
And to those of you who still hear that "baby-voice", try out her acoustic album, (yes, it's on iTunes), and tell me if you still hear it, because I honestly never have.
Love and cheers - Zong.

Well at least one person read your post. I also agree. Lights is one of my favorites and her acoustic album sold me on her. Her two new singles are just a great improvement too. I hope anyone thinking about giving her a try never steps a foot near this review. I just found this site, so I'm going to some of my favorite albums and seeing what this sites thinks of them. Not good so far..
