Yankees in 2.

I'd much rather play Minnesota because their starting pitching is not as good as Detroit's, but on the other hand they probably have the better offense so
CC needs to come out and dominate in game 1 and then we'll be fine
Drew Beringer
10/05/09, 02:45 PM
Yeah, CC's last two postseason starts haven't been great, but I'm sure he will be fine this year.

Yeah, I'll take the Yanks either way.
yankees were like 12-1 against the two teams this year so yankees in 3.

id rather face the tigers, there barely making it in if they make it, the twins have won 16 of 20 and 17 or 21 if they win tomorrow so id rather have the tigers
yankees/tigers - yanks in 4

Twins, if they win, are a COMPLETELY different team compared to the last time they played the Yankees (they were a below .500 team that never won more than 3 straight games). I'm taking the Twins on Tuesday, and expect more competition for the Yankees than the previous 2 regular season Twins-Yanks series. If it wasn't for luck, the Twins would have swept New York @ New York in the first regular season series....Yankees are just plain lucky with their comebacks this year.

i never understood the idea of jinxing. what anyone thinks or says will have absolutely NO effect on how these players perform during a game.

rumors about Molina catching Burnett whenever he pitches and having Posada DH...if Cervelli makes the roster i would like that a lot

It's not all luck that they win all those games. Pretty much every batter in the lineup is a patient hitter that waits for pitchers' mistakes and for the most part they were only down 1 or 2 runs which isn't exactly impossible to come back from.
That said Verlander scares the shit out of me and i don't want to face him twice. The Twins pitcher's aren't near the same caliber as him the only thing that scares me about them is Mauer, in which case you just walk him any chance you can and make someone else beat you

I agree that Verlander is scarey, but in the last two weeks, the Twins have beaten both Verlander and Greinke, even when they had good stuff. The twins have proven they can beat any pitcher. I do agree that, if the twins do win and play the Yankees their pitching will put them in a hole, it's happened to them all year. But you're kidding me if you're only worried about Mauer...Jason Kubel and Michael Cuddyer are not only red-hot right now, they have been good all season and both have all-star potential (they are simply overlooked on a small-market team). Delmon Young is strangely playing well now too...Well see how it goes tomorrow I guess.

His BB/9 is 5th best in the MLB. He doesn't strike out that many hitters but he's 16th in GB% in the AL and he's been worth 3.7 wins this year. Hardly a bad pitcher.

LMFAO, The Yankees won only ~15 more games than the Twins using an exceptionally high pay role and a team composed of one-time and current all-stars...do the math, is that really that impressive: not really. But, it is what it is, you can like what you like, that's fine. In my case I prefer to watch teams who succeed by producing good players within their own system, not those who whore out money to aquire every possible top-notch player they can find (i.e. Mark Teixeira, C.C. Sabathia, etc.). Anyway, wins mean nothing this time of year anyway, it's all momentum.

this is the 40 man roster for 2009. out of those 40, only 17 are free agents or guys acquired in trade. damaso marte is an interesting case because, yes, he was acquired via trade but came out of the yankees' system to begin with and bruney was signed as a minor league free agent from the d-backs.
derek jeter, jorge posada and mariano rivera - arguably three of the greatest players at their respective positions - are all home grown.

The yankees also clinched a week ago and have the best record in the major league. They played backups for the lat week so the 15 more wins arguement is useless. have Your views are totally wrong, when the whole core of Yankees are homegrown (Jeter,Posada,Pettite, Rivera) plus the team that will be playing for us in the future (Cano, Cabrera, Gardener, Cervelli, Pena, and Austin Jackson), never mind our future pitching (Joba, Hughes, Kennedy, Ramirez) but yeah your right, the yankees are a team of total exports.

um...
1 - never judge a relief pitcher by W-L.
2 - edwar ramirez will NEVER be a quality reliever despite a decent 2008. he has no velocity on his fastball and gets lit up like a christmas tree. a solid change up will never fool major league hitting (ESPECIALLY in the AL East) if you have no fastball to establish.

wins for pitchers are a meaningless stat

gardner's speed is all he has. he makes nice defensive plays and takes better routes to balls because he has the speed to.
yes, cabrera is a 4th outfielder at best. while his arm may be decent, his UZR/150 is in the negative and he's only worth 1.5 WAR while guys like mike cameron (someone we could have possibly traded for) has a UZR/150 of almost 9 times cabrera's and is worth 3 times as many WAR. that's on defense alone. melky cabrera and his sub 100 OPS+ is just pathetic for a starting center fielder.

That is the greatest thing I've ever seen.
I'm a Twins fan, and I hate the Yankees with an unbridled passion that lives deep in my soul. That being said, I have no illusions of the Twins chances, if they should beat the Tigers today (I fully expect they will). If they can win 1 game, I'll be happy.
I think part of their problem with the series in New York was that they just got starstruck or something - some kind of stupid inferiority complex. They had the one game wrapped up and then Nathan blows a save, and from there on out it was just like they couldnt' do anything.
If the Twins beat the Tigers (which they ought to), and somehow, through some miracle, beat the Yankees, it would be the greatest moment in sports history for me, I think.

I can agree with you kind of on Gardner, but I just love the fact that if gets on base he can almost automatically get to scoring position. But he hit pretty well this year to just say he is a defensive player.
Cabrera I totally disagree with you on. Cabrera has been excelent hitting-wise this year. Cameron is 10 years older than Cabrera so he may be able to make more plays with his arm, but the upside on Cabrera is fantastic. He is only going to improve the more he plays centerfield. I don't want a 36 year old center fielder, Cabrera has been our centerfielder for most of the year and it worked out fine.

He throws one pitch, and it's not even that good. If you take out his first two months in the league (when his ERA was 0 until May) he looks below average. The league caught up to him and crushed him.

But together they make a solid CF. 30ish steals, 15ish homers, .275ish BA. When you're looking at a platoon in a 5 game series setting, you have to look at them as one position.

robertson, if he can cut down on the walks, is a strikeout machine. melancon can be superb as well, but he's had such limited playing time that when he comes in his command is just awful. but i hope he gets his stuff right because those two guys would make a decent closing tandem in a few years.

WPA is my favorite stat, win probability added. It takes the team's chance of winning the game before and after every at bat and accumulates the changes. So if the Phillies have a 70% chance of winning the game before Brad Lidge enters, then he gives up 2 singles in a row, leaves 2 on and a 1 run lead with zero outs and is pulled for Madson, the Phillies chances of winning are now like 35%. His WPA for the day is -.35. Madson cleans up his mess, gets out of the game - chances of winning 100%. Madson's WPA - +.65. Both pitcher's ERA? 0.00 for the day. ERA is a stupid stat in general, but with inherited baserunners it's even stupider for relievers. You can find WPA on Fangraphs.com.
Other than that - I just look at WHIP, K, and OPS against.

Other than that - I just look at WHIP, K, and OPS against.
never even heard of WPA before now, but it seems like a legit stat.

no worries. it's my favorite pitching stat for relievers, at least that's results-based.
the Yankees also played in probably the best division in baseball while the Twins played in a terrible division
thank you, we have to deal with the sox and the rays while the twins have the tigers the ROYALS CHISOX come on.
