Hola guys, just been real curious as I went to some of my favorite bands myspaces they have some pretty generic looking Myspaces. My band is about to build ours with a sweet graphic designer, so just curious....
what do you WANT and NOT WANT from a bands myspace....
More importantly, what are some cool bands Myspaces out there that don't seem too generic (Foo Fighters) but also not too "overdone" (The Dangerous Summer) : I'm talking sick designs/set ups here people. Thanks in advance!!!

i only use myspace for bands, i don't have a personal one, but i HATE it when they have videos/songs that start without you clicking on them. don't have that.

I want the most basic Myspace you can give me. Bands that load their myspaces with videos and the like are bands that don't get me to stay on their page very long. Myspace already runs terrible so lets not compound it with a ton of unnecessary stuff. If you want to get cutsy with your web presence you should work on creating a unique website, not building off the atrocity that is myspace.
Edit: Point being that if you're going to have a myspace for your band put some pictures on it, maybe some links, and whatever songs you want the user to be able to listen to, and that's about it.

like i said, im a really big fan of the "basic" set up as well. Myspace isn't "new" anymore at this stage in the game, but I'm just interested if anyone has seen a page lately that receives a verbal "ohhhh yeah, very nice" . i know i haven't....

i like it when there's a big neon banner of the band at the very top and you have to scroll for 20 minutes before getting to the music player

Bad stuff: I hate band myspaces that are to big and colorful, I hate when they take forever to load too. Not a fan of advertisements all over the myspaces IE: What fearless does for ALL of their bands. Not a fan of bands who post stupid things like "Influences: Your mom" or some other 'quirky" crap.
Good Stuff: keeping fans informed, I like bands that have a separate file folder for each member pics so you can see who plays what/who they are. Don't like when they have auto playing videos or crap on a myspace page, link to the youtube videos, dont directly put it on the page.
http://www.myspace.com/sickcity - Like this style layout, not necessarily them on the top, but the fact its simple and they link to the videos.
make a purevolume instead

OK:
I do NOT want to have to wait for every band members twitter to load on the main page. I don't want a layout that cuts off half of the Music Player when on Firefox. And we don't need fifty four pictures on the myspace page. Bands have a photo section for that.
And, ahh, other than that go nuts.

Keep it simple. Seriously. The flashy crap is fun and all, but the average person on a good to great browser expects about a 10-15 second load time. If it takes longer than that, chances are--unless they really really want to hear your shit--they'll leave just as quick as they came. Your goal with myspace is to get people on the page, let them hear the tunes, add you as a friend, and come back as they please. If you use up every ounce of possible bandwidth with ridiculous neon banners and flash designs, most people won't give a shit that you exist.
Your best bet: basic one color background, easy to read text, maybe a medium sized promo shot of the band across the top and you're done.

If your band was good you wouldn't have to have a fancy Myspace.

Unfortunately, you're wrong.
Things I HATE about bands myspaces....
They have so much stuff (pictures, twitter feeds, videos, flash) that load right away that it takes up to a minute to get the music player to start. Be simple, but be clean and nice. Instead of embedding things like twitter feeds, use a button.
Don't put a huge fancy banner at the bottom, that's not important, anything important should be above the fold.

Lame. This is absolutely untrue. Stop being an ass just to be an ass... it's not endearing.

And again guys, thanks so much for the feedback! I feel like a lot of you do, that less is more when it comes to this stuff.
still just interested in some really cool design set ups that are out there.

Really just make it regular don't put on any format. If your music is good enough it won't matter what it looks like.

Don't use massive banners at the top of the page. If I'm going to a band myspace, I'm going there to listen to the music player, not stare at a 2000x3000px banner for 10 seconds while scrolling down.
I don't like twitter widgets either. Just link to it and other sites like purevolume, facebook, etc.
Also make sure it's compatible with different browsers. I hate when I'm using opera or firefox and there's something blocking the music player or the layout doesn't display properly.

make a really good real website not on myspace and use a purevolume, you get real exposure and dont have to compete with bands who use a bot to add friends and increase there song plays. you can get a sense who and if they really are listening

You really need to do both. Use MySpace/Facebook/Twitter/Etc to market your website at the very least. These are free social networking tools that spread the word easily and quickly.
Nothing substitutes for a nice website, but use the free resources that are out there, as well.

The work done by http://www.wearesynapse.com/ and http://www.sonsofnero.com (http://www.sonsofnero.com/) is some of the only worthwhile design work on all of MySpace.

I'm pretty sure I'm right. I wouldn't got to a bands myspace to see all the fancy html.

Someone is 27, has down time at work, and wishes to see what's new in the world of independant/underground music.
If logic bothers you, I'm sorry... but there's not reason to spout off nonsense to make yourself feel liek a better person. MySpace, Twitter, Facebook, etc. are great FREE tools for bands to promote themselves and their web sites. I apologize for telling you the truth, I'll try to refrain.
