in your opinion what is a band that really gets the atmosphere of a song...a band that paints a picture in your head with almost every song?
adding lsd doesnt count

The Decemberists. Also, Forgive Durden. Some of the best stories told via song.

Bob Dylan, too

Immortal Technique is the first one that comes to mind.

While it's not my favorite stuff, I always get a clear idea of what's going on when I listen to The Dear Hunter saga.

We can't bust heads like we used to. But we have our ways. One trick is to tell stories that don't go anywhere. Like the time I caught the ferry to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for m'shoe. So I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt. Which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on 'em. Gimme five bees for a quarter, you'd say. Now where was I... oh yeah. The important thing was that I had an onion tied to my belt, which was the style at the time. You couldn't get white onions, because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones...

Erm ... Manchester Orchestra paint a picture in my head, as do Brand New, State Radio and Kevin Devine!

usually either songs that are ambient or full of emotion that makes me imagine the song as it reveals itself in my mind, a good example is Thrice's "The Artist In The Ambulance" first time i heard that song i could really imagine a person/artist in ambulance and all this crazy shit happening

Denison Witmer is my favorite storyteller type, all of his songs tell a story and present a great pciture of what he's singing about. Having lived in Philly helps in getting him, though.

onion rings are the best.

and i agree on Forgive Durden.

Gatsby's Volcano colored me a thousand paintings. So much for paintings being worth a thousand words.

Hey kids, do you love strong, overpowering and bitter tasting veggies? Yeah? Now we'll dip them in artery-clogging, greasy and gross fried dough! Yeah! Eat it kids. Eat that up, future-fatties!

...

I support onion rings because I like artery-clogging, greasy and gross fried dough.

I can deal with onion rings, but besides that they disgust me. If one could turn onions into audio, I imagine it'd be atmospheric.

Edit: Said this before I realized that the thread is now about onions. Every time I ask for onions on my sub at Subway, they put like three little shreds. This does not make me happy.

Explosions In The Sky, and definitely Modest Mouse on their "Moon and Antarctica" album.
