Jason Tate
05/13/06, 10:22 PM
We've found that some of the same questions are repeated day in and day out around AP.net. To put an end to all of the speculation and rumors (and general curiosity) we've decided to allow the AP.net reading public to "interview" Jason Tate (the founder of this website) in a "no holds barred" kind of manner. We asked for the toughest questions (from his haters, detractors, and fans) so he could finally give definitive answers on all of them.

Note from Jason: I am not going to spend much time correcting spelling or grammar. I will do a second part of this in the future (if you have follow up questions), and I apologize in advance for any of my overly sarcastic comments that will be misconstrued. All of the original questions can be found in this thread (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=133226). Thank you to everyone who posted questions there were some great ones included here and although this was time-consuming it was still a lot of fun to reflect on what this website has become to me (and everyone else).

What happened to Jeremy Rankin?

Wow. Long time reader, eh? Thank you for sticking around for so many years. From what I remember about Jeremy's situation, he just sort of stopped doing any real work for us. I don't really have a vivid memory as to why but I am pretty sure he just faded away and had a few family issues that kept him from being able to be heavily involved in AP as I was pushing forward.

Why did you stop making the absolute punk ezine?

Time. I didn't have the time to put it all together the way I wanted and I figured that it wasn't something vital to how the website was ran; therefore, it was easier not to try and write as much each month when I wanted to be focusing on expanding other features. There's a possibility we'll see a return of this feature some day (but more likely it will be folded into the podcast).

What happened between you and Taking Back Sunday?

When Taking Back Sunday had their internal combustion (members leaving), I knew about it before anyone else in this 'zine world. Back in those days I had a lot of contacts inside the TBS and BN camps so I heard about the entire incident. I was going to post about it until their manager asked that I hold off. Due to the volatile nature of the entire situation, and the fact that nothing was really settled about the future of the band - I agreed. In return they promised to do the first interview after the split with us. I thought that'd be amazing. When the dust had settled, and it came time for me to do the interview, I asked for fan-submitted questions and we set up the conference call. About half-way through the interview I asked the fan-submitted question, "how does it feel to continue singing songs that were very personal to the ex-members of the band (There's No "I" in Team)?" The response from a certain member was basically, "how dare you ask that question? I can't believe you'd ask that, these are my songs as much as John's." That effectively ended the interview. After the interview took place some fans submitted to us a few statements that were reportedly made on stage about AP.net by the band during shows. The truth of those statements were never known. However, I was then informed by Jake Wallace (a staff member) that at a show Adam called us "nothing more then a tabloid magazine." While this claim is basically true, it didn't set well with me. I'm an overly protective person when it comes to AP, and I take things personally. I took this very personally for some reason (probably due to the interview conflict). I basically wrote the band off at that point and tossed the interview in the trash. A few months later they released WYWTB, which I thought was ruined by their producer (and bad writing) and I kind of expressed those feelings. All of this mixed together caused "the infamous drama." Good news is I'm over it now. I don't care any more and, in fact, I think Louder Now is a great driving CD. Life's too short to hold grudges. I don't know what the band/manager think of me anymore, but hopefully they don't hate me as much as I've heard they do.

If you were offered a massive amount of money, similar to the amount that has been offered to Facebook, and also sites such as myspace, would you take it?

Yes. I've always wanted to be crazy successful. I don't think I have ever hid that dream of mine. I don't want a "real" job, and I don't think anyone has to starve to be taken seriously. In reality, I'd rather have someone give me a smaller lump sum and take over the administrative aspects of the site (and the ad revenue) and pay me a monthly salary to continue doing what I do best (post news, consult about new ideas, etc.). That would be my ideal situation because I wouldn't have to worry about money, and I'd still get to talk about music. Win/win sort of deal. Not sure if it will ever happen though, but if it did - I'd be very open to discuss those possibilities with anyone interested. If anyone knows any venture capitalists, give them my number.

List a couple of things explaining how you connect with The Smiths/Morrissey's music.

We both have huge egos. Well, actually, what I connect to most is the lyrics. I've discovered that music fans can sort of be categorized into what they like/get out of the music they love. I am very much a lyric and/or vocalist kind of guy. Musical instrumentation is fine and I enjoy a good beat, but if I can relate to what's being sung then the music really clicks with me. That's most certainly the common trait within those bands I go nuts over (Morrissey, Brand New, Say Anything, Spill Canvas, Thrice, Jimmy Eat Word, The Format, et al.) and why I'm not very impressed with a different time signature or shredding guitar solo.

What do you think of the "Emo Scene" (stupid term, I know, but I don't how to label it). Do you think the music that comes from it will last? And your thoughts on bands that are labeled with that term that maybe shouldn't be.

Well, that depends on what you mean by "last." If you mean, will it last for me? Then yes. I'll be listening to bands like J.E.W and Brand New when I'm old and gray. I just know I will. Will it last in the mainstream? Well, not in it's current form, no. But the "emo scene" (as you call it) covers such a wide range of music that in some form, I think it will always be around. When we're covering everything from Every time I Die to Sufjan Stevens there is such a wide range that I don't see everything going out of style all at once. Musical tastes change (mine have) but yet I'm still sitting soundly in this same genre. For example: If I busted out the new Anathallo album 5 years ago no one would believe me that AP.net's webmaster would be interested in it. Yet, here we are. Everyone gets lumped into a genre because it's just easy to do. It's not really wrong, but it doesn't really mean anything. I think it's stupid when a band gets ticked about the genre someone labels them in. It's okay if someone calls you pop-punk. It's okay if you're called emo. It doesn't really mean that's what you are and the lines between all the genres are blurring more and more each year.

What do you think of my favorite bands The Beatles and Oasis?

I love The Beatles. I like Oasis, but I'm not the biggest fan - there's other artists I'd rather listen to. I think both bands are very iconic.

I want to know how much income this site generates, or profit, even.

We generate a varying profit every month. I do make money off of this website; however, the exact amount is never constant. We have a good team over at indieclick.com that seem to be doing a great job for us, I'm not complaining (and I don't think they are either). I'm reluctant to give exact numbers about how much I personally make because it always makes people jump to conclusions and feeds jealousy. Furthermore, that's just not how I was raised. What I will say is that I am doing pretty good for myself at 23. I will also stress that the only money made off the website is through indieclick - I don't take money for any features/exclusives/leaks/reviews or anything else. I get a check every six weeks from indieclick (minus their percentage), and that's it.

When can we have scene points back?

I removed them because they became mostly useless. Everyone had too many and there wasn't any purpose anymore. I may bring them back some day if I can make them incredibly difficult to get. Everyone maxed them out and I didn't see the relevance any longer. I wanted them so people could give a thumbs up/thumbs down on people's posts (ie. who is respected) but they became so arbitrary, that I didn't think they served their purpose.

What's the whole story with Kamtin Mohager?

The whole story is a lot less fun then you probably think. He quit doing anything. He just basically stopped writing reviews (which is what I wanted him doing), yet he was still getting into shows for free and getting free Cd's. I didn't think that was the best use of a staff member, so I let him go. The reason we don't really get along now is because I heard from a few bands (and former staff members) that he would go up to bands at shows and say, "Hi, I'm Kamtin from AP.net" and that he bragged his reasoning for doing so was "to get free stuff." I didn't really agree with that mentality. To further the "drama" a friend of mine told me after he met me at a show (for like 5 minutes) he called me a "preppy bro." I'm not a big fan of indie-scensters and if someone is going to judge me on how I dress - well - fuck them.

Do you still have the code for the old, old red AP.net layout. That site was better looking than it is now.

No I don't. I wish I had saved all those old designs now. AP's current design is based off of functionality and ease of use. I could spend a lot of time and make a bad ass Web2.0 design or something, but I don't have the time - or need. I like how AP looks and runs right now (minus a few things I'm still working on).

Do you ever get so frustrated with things on the site (users, members, down system, codes, etc.) that you just want to let it die for a day or two and not think about it?

Probably once a week. But the music keeps me here. It's hard not to toss on one of my favorite albums and not want to work on the website. It just goes hand in hand for me. It's such a part of who I am now, that I can't really imagine not doing it. I get frustrated with things because I'm a perfectionist and hate when things don't work right. I get frustrated when people misinterpreted me, or my feelings. And I get annoyed when people think that I'm the only person who shouldn't be allowed to have an opinion on a matter. My words are under a microscope, and that can get obnoxious. Having my passions translated as hype makes me sad. It's not how I intend it to be, it's just the amount of people I can now reach.

What do you think of SNAKES ON A PLANE?

I think it's an example of how the Internet can build a phenomenon. It's a sign of the times and something that should be studied closely by those looking to discover the future of the entertainment industry. As a movie, I think it will be a complete farce. With that said, I'll probably still go see it.

How did you start this website?

This one is going to be a long one. But let's get it all down on paper once and for all.

Freshman year of high-school I was taking a class called "info-tech." We had to create a small 3 page website for the class. I had been fascinated with computers and technology for years - dabbling in all the aspects I could (and breaking my parent's computer on a weekly basis). My teacher saw this fascination (I was basically teaching the class at the time and had made a pretty sweet website) and recommended to some faculty that I be part of a student lead team to create the high-school's website. (Side-note: The irony being that I didn't turn in any work for this info-tech class and failed it outright. By work, I mean worksheets with Internet acronyms , and I am not even close to kidding. I had to convince my guidance councilor to drop the class from my transcript and give me credit for my work on the high-school website instead. It worked. I got an A.) So, I convinced my Dad to buy me a copy of Adobe Pagemaker and my Grandparents bought me my first computer (with my Dad's urging so I'd stop breaking his). I taught myself how to use it along with basic HTML. I helped create my high-school's website and learned all I possibly could along the way (checked out every book I found at the library and spent hours reading websites). I found a passion and made it my number one priority. In order to fuck around with the things I was learning, I created a small personal website. I got a free domain name and picked the name based on my love for Blink182 and MxPx (I thought they were punk), alphabetizing, and an Absolut Vodka ad. This little personal site became an obsession. I added to it - got it linked up on some other websites, and people started visiting. The more people visited, the more I wanted to try new things out and keep working on it. People started emailing me recommendations for other bands, I checked them out - and my CD collection exploded. The more I listened to these other bands, the more I realized that I wanted a place where I could talk to like-minded fans about them. I couldn't find a place like that on-line, so I figured, "why not make one?" And so, I did. I got lucky, but I also worked my ass off. I didn't sleep much and sort of ignored everything else in my life that wasn't needed (I was blessed with good genes and could get B's by not trying). So, the more I learned, the more I changed AP to fit what I was learning. And if I didn't know how to do something - I taught myself a way to do it. With a little luck, a lot of hard work, and an overconfident belief in myself ... it worked out. I once read a quote from Mark Twain that said something along the lines of, "the two constant characteristics of success are arrogance and ignorance." I think I had/have a good portion of both and it helped me to tune out all the people that said it wouldn't work. I'll try to keep from sounding preachy - but, far too many kids these days are taught not to believe in themselves. Teachers tell them they're wrong, peers tell them they're ugly, parents force them to follow paths that kill their dreams. To me, it's important to at least try. I knew if I fucked up and didn't get what I wanted/dreamed that I had things to fall back on. I was never worried of failing, I was only worried what I'd say on my deathbed if I didn't try. I wish more people would listen to the inner voices instead of all the outer ones. You'd be amazed at how everyone that told you you'd never amount to anything, or that you'd fail, or that you're wasting your time, looks when you complete your first goal. Every time I make a mental checkmark of another success, I think of all the snide remark I overheard. Every time I fail, or make a mistake, I picture those same people. It's the drive to achieve what I was told I couldn't that keeps me moving. And that's why, with confidence, I can assure you that AP.net is no where near what we can be or what we will be. This is only the beginning - I promise you that.

What are some of your classic (the ones that you will always love) favorite bands, current favorites, and any up and coming bands?

Classic: Morrissey, Brand New, Thrice, Say Anything, and Jimmy Eat World. Each has hit me at a part of my life that they are forever as close to me as my own skin. Current: The Format, Cartel, Brandtson, The Bronx, A Wilhelm Scream, and The Living End. Up and Coming: Sherwood, Scenes from a Movie, My Favorite Highway, Anathallo, and Over It.

Is the music business as hard as people make it out to be?

No. What makes it so "hard" is that no one is willing to change. Everyone already involved in the industry thinks that it is easier to fight the new models instead of adapting them. Because of this it's hard for the younger generations to get involved with the older ones. The younger end up having to start their own projects because all the old guys don't want to play nicely together. If there could be an amalgam of the two cultures - changes could be made, and I think the business aspect itself could be revitalized. If you want to get involved in the music business - my advice is simple: DO IT. Don't wait, don't sit around and think you need prerequisites. Learn all you possibly can, and just dive in. Surround yourself with the right people. If you know what aspect of the industry you want to get in - it's even easier. Shadow your role model. Get involved. Take what you already know, add your own ideas, and find a way to maximize the talents you do have into assets for the position you want to fulfill.

Are you a pothead? I remember some years ago during Christmas, there was a picture of Santa on here with a bunch of bud. It made me laugh.

No. I don't do any drugs of any kind. I drink a beer or two occasionally (and drank quite a bit in college), but I do not do anything else. I tried weed a few times in high-school (mostly after a bad break up); however, it didn't stick. I would get mad at myself after being high (or even drunk for that matter) because I felt like I was being unproductive and had wasted hours of my life doing something stupid instead of working on AP and my long-term goals. Once I realized that if I was getting stoned I wasn't able to work on this website, it was easy to avoid.

How has your taste in music grown with this site?

When it started I was all about Blink182, Home Grown. MxPx, No Use for a Name, and other similar bands. Now I listen to a much, much broader range of music. My detractors don't like to admit it - but my tastes range from classical (Hans Zimmer, Chopin, Danny Elfman) to harder music (A Wilhelm Scream, Underoath, Rise Against, Larry Arms) to softer music (Sufjan Stevens, Days Away, Bright Eyes) to pop (Imogen Heap, Jimmy Eat World) to rock (Latterman) to pop-punk (Cartel, Fall Out Boy).

Why/when did you start hiring staff?

When I realized that I couldn't add all of the content I wanted and that there were others out there like me. It makes life easier on me, so that I don't have to get caught up in all of (I still love doing some) the daily tasks. I can instead focus on expanding AP and reaching my goals. I am blessed with having some great people on staff that know my aspirations and are helping me to reach them.

Do you know a girl named Maja? She's a total a whore and claims to be a victim of everything.

I do not. Never heard the name before in my life. I hope she claims she slept with me though, that's be fucking awesome.

I remember when the message boards first started here. What do you think of the people on there now?

For the most part, I love them. I don't get some of the animosity toward others (or me), but as a whole, I think we have a pretty solid community.

Besides pop-punk artists, what are your favorite artists of other genres (Indie, hardcore, ect.) or what has really caught your ear.

I'm bad with genres. I lump things together I shouldn't and people always tell me the bands I listen to aren't really in the genres I think they are (just watch, I'll get all kinds of shit for this answer). But I'll give it a shot anyways.

Pop: The Format, Jimmy Eat World.
Indie: The Arctic Monkeys, Sufjan Stevens.
Emo: Mineral, Sunny Day Real Estate.
Hardcore: As I Lay Dying, Every Time I Die, Underoath.
Punk: Latterman, Lifetime, The Clash.

What the hell happened with AP.net and Senses Fail?

A member of the band made a comment in an interview that was along the lines of (at least this is how I took it), "AP.net only hypes what they are paid to hype." I got pissed at that remark because 1) it's completely not true, and 2) it's funny that Senses Fail would say that after all the "hype" we gave them for their EP. That was before they were ever signed (and they never paid us a dime). I made a post attempting to clear up that we did not in-fact take money for "hype." Scott Heisel responded saying he talked to Buddy at a show and that the conversation included Buddy admitting he, "thinks AP.net is a horrible website but will use it to get a paycheck." I took offense to that as well and said, "fuck it - we won't post about your band anymore." We have since all made up and there are no issues at all with us and that band.

What do you think was the demise of Drive-Thru Records?

The problem with DTR was simply in their deal with MCA/Geffen Records. Drive-Thru appeared to make a conscious decision to basically stop signing bands or releasing albums under their Geffen contract because they didn't want their bands stolen or whatever. As fickle as it sounds, it looks like a bunch of kids had an, "out of sight out of mind" mentality. Furthermore, what made DTR so big for a while was their progressive signings (Something Corporate and Finch) and they appear to have strayed from that lately. While I still like a bunch of their bands, they've spread themselves thin and I haven't noticed an infrastructure as coherent or focused as some of the other big indies now days (T&N, FBR, etc.). A few years ago everyone wanted to be on Drive-Thru Records and everyone wanted to sing like Jordan from NFG. Now everyone wants to be on Fueled by Ramen and everyone wants to sing like Patrick from FOB. All that's changed are the acronyms.

Any plans for another AP.net tour?

Yes. Some day. The reason we haven't done one lately is because the first one was a success for some, but not to me. It drew kids, but not enough. The problem was that we picked a whole bunch of "up-and-coming" bands. If we had that line up now (Say Anything, Audio Karate, MC Lars) I think we'd have much bigger crowds at all the shows. However, at the time no one really had heard of them. If I could do something with a "big" band and then a few smaller ones, I'd be up for it. I'm just not keen on jumping into that whole scene again until I am positive that we can pack venues.

Where would you like to take AbsolutePunk in the next five years?

I want AP to be [I]the community for music slightly off the beaten mainstream path. I want AP to be a culture of it's own, one that allows the world to talk about music and discover new bands. I want to streamline everything so that we're easy to use, and easy to update. Then I want to grow. Bring in people that may like a few bands we talk about, and convince them to check out a few more. I want the basically create an environment where everyone knows to come to us first and have our music community be the driving force behind what content is posted here.

What are/did you major(ing) in college?

I majored in Business Administration from the University of Redlands (a small, private, 4 year liberal arts University).

Has anyone recognized you while being out and about?

Yes. Only a few times though (at shows it happens all the time). It's awkward for me because I want people to get to know me as Jason Tate first and then "the owner of AP.net" second.

Do you have any stalkers?

Not currently. Unless you count Mitch.

Does the line "I founded, own, and run AbsolutePunk.net" get you any female you want?

I very rarely tell people exactly what I do for a living if I'm asked. I have never really told a girl about it - I've been confident enough with my other pick-up lines instead of needing that one. However, I think being self-employed (and good at it) is what turns girls on in general. I'm not really into the girls in this "scene" to begin with, and I've always tended to date outside of it. Sometimes it's nice not to have to talk about the "day-job" when you just want to relax and hang out. And I've found that the girls that do know what I do/knew what I did to begin with - tend to end up thinking they're owed things. They get very possessive and I have felt very used toward the end of the relationship. I like doing things for those in my life; however, if you think just because I can get you something I should get you something - you're going to piss me off.

Could you make me prestigious seeing how I've been here forever, sit here for hours, but never seem to get my post count to move?

Maybe. You're not that far off.

A year ago you had posted something about just wanting to close the whole site and be done with it. Why had you come to that conclusion? What made you change your mind? Are you happy with the current state of things?

I think the incident you're referring to was around the time when a bunch of my staff decided that the one weekend I was away from a computer would be the best time to post bashing reviews of the new Fall Out Boy record. This upset me for a variety of reasons. For starters it happened the one weekend I was out of town. I felt betrayed by my staff, as though they planned everything for the moment I wasn't looking. It was a big time violation of trust. Furthermore, FOB have been my baby since they started. They've been a band I've been very protective about, and have been absolutely some of the nicest guys in the world to me. Now, regardless of who says something about an album ... I'm always the one that becomes the "figurehead" of sorts for the words. So even if a reviewer trashes on the CD, I'm still, in a way, responsible. And I feel the heat. Seeing as Pete reads this website, I came home to an email from him basically being like: "what's going on here"? I felt like I'd let down a friend. I thought the album was great and wanted to do a lot of promotion via AP.net for them. I felt like I was stabbed in the back by those close to me. Last, but not least, we were the ONLY webzine thanked in their new album. And it wasn't just me - it was "AP.net" - so I was pissed off that my staff would do something like this without consulting me. If I had been informed, I would have still let them write their reviews; however, I would have made sure that I wrote one as well (or been involved in the "group" review). Now, this whole incident was coupled with me finding out my GF was cheating on me and that I was a few credits shy of graduating (I took a semester off and was working my ass off my last year to finish on time). All of this made me want to toss my hands up. I don't like feeling out of control on this website - it's the one environment I usually have completely control over (God complex, I know) and that led me to the comments about quiting. I am currently very happy with the state of things. I have a few things I am looking to change/fix/create policies on - but those are minor, and in a few months I think AP will be running like a well oiled machine. I can't wait.

Will this ever turn into a record label?

Maybe. The reason it hasn't yet is because I don't like doing anything unless I can give it 100% and make sure I can make it the absolute best. I don't have the financial capabilities to give bands what they need at this point in time. And if I was to do an imprint deal, I wouldn't have the time to focus on it to blow my bands up. In the future, this is something I may get into - but it depends on how much time I have and what I can do. I'm not going to do it unless I can do it right.

Who is the biggest douche bag you have ever interviewed and can you tell us what he/her said or did to be such a douche bag?

I already hinted at the answer to this one.

Who is the nicest person/band you have ever had the pleasure of meeting/interviewing?

Pete from Fall Out Boy or the entire band of Over It. Our reunions are always hugs all around.

What's your favorite music website other than AP.net?

Digg.com/music

Do your parents support your work?

Yes. They've been extremely supportive. I'm not so sure they've always been that way though. I mean, the last thing my mom said to me when she dropped me off at college was, "don't focus on the website here, get an education so you can get a good job" or something along those lines. She's recently admitted she's extremely glad I didn't listen to her (I don't follow directions well). My parents spent hours helping me stuff the Andrew McMahon bands and if they hadn't raised me the way they did - I probably wouldn't have the drive I do. Once I convinced them I wasn't going to be a lawyer or doctor and that I could support myself, they've been nothing but incredible (and jealous).

Ever been tempted to sell off the site and get a job somewhere in the music industry?

The reason I haven't done that is because I would feel as though I had to only focus on a small group of bands. I enjoy the freedom of being able to dabble in all kinds of music without having someone tell me, "you are promoting this band - get to it." I wouldn't be able to handle that well.

Do you write music of your own?

I write a lot (some can be found in my journal) and can play the piano (kinda). But I can't play the guitar (a childhood injury makes it impossible for me to bend the first joint on my left index finger) and haven't ever really had the desire to start a band.

How does someone go about getting a job here?

In order to get a "job" here you need to bring something to the table that we don't already have. We have enough covering certain genres, but if you can prove to me that you're able to bring something to us that we don't have - and can do it very well - then I want you on board. It's all about having the desire to be the best, and showing the passion to attempt and achieve the same sort of goals I am.

Have you ever been paid by a band/label to "hype" something?

Never. And that's what bothers me the most. People take my passion as hype. If I was a nobody just talking about the bands/albums I love - then it'd be considered nothing. It's only because of the size of AP that my words get twisted and considered "hype" by so many other people. I'm just an overly emotional person when it comes to music (hello, I created a website about it) and I get really excited when something moves me. I'd never take money for it though, what would be the point? The only money that comes in to this website is via advertisements. It's sad that this is what people think of us - I know people have started all sorts of rumors to bring us down, but this sort of thing really bothers me (along with the rumors that we leak CDs) because it's just not true.

Why aren't there more female staff?

There will be soon. The reason there isn't at the moment is because of a few issues we had with the last ones we had.

Team Aniston or Team Jolie?

Team Aniston. Come on! I'm the biggest Friends fan in the world. Jolie just looks dirty to me .. very slutty (of course she kicked ass in Hackers though).

What happened with Jamison Kane?

From what I remember he made a post on the website insinuating that we took money to promote bands or something. A lot of the drama is started on this claim - which is so unfounded it's hilarious.

How much does it cost to run the website and how much money do you receive from it?

Roughly $850 a month, plus additional fees and purchases needed to keep it running. As for profit, I'd like to keep those exact numbers private. We do make money though.

What do you think of that Daniel Powter song, 'Bad Day?'

Never heard of it.

How do you feel about This Day & Age?

Love them. Their new demos sound great.

The Fray, yes or no?

A band? No comment.

What was your first show/concert ever?

The Ataris and MxPx. That night changed who I am.

What is the best/favorite show you've ever attended?

Brand New, before Deja came out. Jesse spent most of the night on his back imitating Micheal J. Fox in Back to the Future.

What is your favorite song of all time?

"Soco Ameretto Lime" by Brand New. Although I hate the girl it reminds me of now.

If AP got like even huger than it is now, and you could book your own mega tours, what would your ultimate line up be?

Blink182, Brand New, Thrice, and Morrissey. That'd have a little bit of everything.

What is your favorite song from each MxPx album/EP?

AC/EP: Where Will We Go

Good question. These are the only albums I own, so I hope I didn't miss anything.

Do you miss Jon Wark?

Not really. He used to tell people he owned AP, that was kinda lame.

Who was Madison Bleak, and why did the labels hate him/her/it?

A combination of a bunch of people on staff and a bunch of people not on staff. It wasn't just one person. And they probably hated the fact that people took things that were said as truth. There was a lot of real things said and a lot of basically bullshit (libel) things said. I don't like lawsuits, that's why I pulled the plug on that whole thing.

What are your plans for life after AP.net/college?

I want to have kids and raise them; however, I kind of want to travel the world first. Then, when my kids are all grown up I want to become a high-school English teacher and warp the minds of the youth.

Every once in awhile you obsess over a band claiming they're going to be huge ... sometimes it works (Yellowcard), sometimes it just kind of stops (Jamison Parker). Which of the "Tatebands" disappointed you most?

Well, personal issues messed up the JamisonParker thing, which is too bad - I thought they had a good pop thing going there. Hmmm .. I am disappointed in what happened with Yellowcard, but I don't think that's what you're really talking about. I'd say Midtown. I wanted those guys to blow up so bad and I put everything I could into trying to make it happen ... and it didn't. I feel like I failed. That band is so good and their first two albums are so similar to the Cd's that made Fall Out Boy huge that it's just a shame it never happened.

I was told by a reliable singer that you were "short." How tall are we talking here?

5'9" or 10" - I'm average. But I'm not all average. What giant ass singer told you this? William? Gabe?

What are your top five favorite books?

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance - Robert Pirsig
You Shall Know Our Velocity - Dave Eggers
A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius - Dave Eggers
Ender's Game - Orson Scott Card
I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell - Tucker Max

Do you mind it when "certain people" ask you every chance they get if you will hire them?

When they don't maximize their potential, yes. If hate hiring someone and then they don't do anything. I like to only bet on sure things. Prove to me it's worth my time.

Don't you hate pants?

I actually really like pants. I wear jeans most of the time.

Seeing as how this site started out as a Blink 182/MXPX fan site, have you ever talked to either of those bands in person or what not?

Nope. I was 3 feet from Tom and Mark once backstage, but they were running around chasing each other with stuffed animals. I also once walked by Mike at an after-party and froze up like a star struck little girl. I have an autographed picture of MxPx I got from their label and I have some Blink182 autographs as well, but that's as close as I've gotten. Maybe someday I'll get lucky, but I don't know.

What is your favorite user avatar?

This one (http://www.absolutepunk.net/customavatars/avatar43173_1.gif).

Have you ever fired or banned someone because of their taste in music?

No, but I've fired and banned people because of how they express their taste in music.

What's a usual day in the life of Jason Tate like? Run us through your daily routine.

Woah. Haha, Okay. Let's see, I wake up between 9 and 10 o'clock and find some sweatpants to put on. I make my way into my office (down the hall, to the right) and turn on my two computers. I make a quick check to see that AP.net is up and running, and another fast glance at my IMs and emails to see if there is anything vital that needs my attention. If not, I head downstairs to get some breakfast (yogurt and OJ) and read all my emails and the latest news on AP while eating. I then spend a few hours posting, answering emails, and harassing Jared on-line. I look for news, look at our stats for the previous day, and check over my notes. (Side-note: I keep notes with me at almost all times - just in case I have an idea or brainstorm for the website.) Then I start on my checklist (I have like 15 pages) of things I want to improve on the website in order to make it "perfect." I spend a few hours working/coding and am posting around on the site all the while. When I need a break I work out. I either go for a run, jump-rope in the garage, hit the punching bag, or do strength conditioning. After that I make myself lunch, grab a bottle of water, read the news or watch some TV (usually House, Scrubs, Friends, or Entourage). Then I take a shower, shave, and do that whole deal. Then, it's back to the website. More news posting, more playing around with things, checking my email and answering IMs or phone calls to set features/exclusives up. I'll talk to a few friends on-line or on the phone (if any are in town I'll go out and grab a drink with them or something). If I can convince my parents to invite me over for dinner I'll make the drive to their house for the free food - but if not, then I've been trying my hand at my new BBQ and I'll make myself something bloody. I have my sidekick on me basically 24/7 to keep up-to-date with what's going on with the website and in contact with the staff (and a few other people). I'll eat dinner, watch some TV, and then spend most of the rest of the night ('till about 3 AM) working on the website, doing updates, playing with things, listening to new music that came in the mail, etc. I spend an hour reading and pass out with Friends on TV (every night without fail or I can't sleep). That's about it. Some days are mixed up if I have other things going on or I need to run an errand - but that's a basic day. I have my place wired with iPod docks in almost every room and it's rare that I'm not listening to music almost constantly throughout the day. My days are pretty lax, I decide how much or how little I want to work on things. Some days I am completely motivated and want to work for 12 hours straight (and I will) and others I just can't make myself do anything productive. That's the beauty of this whole set-up though, I get to choose when, where, and how I want to do things. And if I slack off and ruin it - then it's all my own fault and I am completely to blame. For me (someone who hates taking orders from anyone) it's the ideal job. It's exactly what I wanted.

Has AP.net ever gotten you laid?

Yes, but I didn't know she knew about the website at the time. I got played (hmm, or maybe it was the other way around).

I had a band member IM me yesterday, and we got to chatting, and he admitted that more people in this scene read AP.net than anybody will ever know. Bands have been signed and have careers because of this website - it's like fucking american idol. How does that feel?

It's simultaneously the most amazing feeling and scariest feeling you can imagine. I understand that with great power comes great responsibility (-10 points for the Spider-Man reference), and it's not something I take lightly. I never expected people to listen to me - I just always wanted them to. While I am filled with pride about what the fact that we can help bands, I am as equally worried that we can ruin bands as well. In the end though we're just sharing our feelings on music - if people agree, then that's amazing. If they don't then that's cool too. I've had help in my attempt to achieve my dreams, I am more then happy to help others reach theirs.

If one band that's broken up played ONE reunion show anywhere in the world that you'd be willing to go see, what band would it be?

At this point in time probably Blink182. I've seen them 3 or 4 times, but I'd love one more shot (and I'd pull out all my contacts to try and meet the band).

You're active in the forums. favorite thread?

Dear Fiancée.

I want to know your unedited thoughts on Scott Heisel.

This whole ordeal with Scott stemmed from the most idiotic episode in the entire world. Seriously, it's just stupid. Let me explain how it all started. When Moneen signed to Vagrant Records a close friend of the band IM'd me and told me. I posted the news on AP.net. An hour or so later I got an email from Scott@Punknews.org demanding that I source them on the story. Apparently he thought I took the news from them and didn't source it - he was wrong. I looked at the time-stamp on my post and the time-stamp on the PN.org post. Ours was before theirs. So I emailed Scott back and basically told him to go to hell and not to accuse me of things I didn't do. Our email conversation turned heated and that's about it. So then he starts posting on AP.net and trash-talking me, and he apparently goes to Motion City Soundtrack and talks shit about me and my website. That's what I think is totally lame, going to bands and talking shit about me behind my back? Whatever. So basically I think he's a hypocrite with a big mouth. He's doing things at Alt. Press that he basically reamed me and AP.net about in the past. But I don't care anymore - I just think it's weak when he lets his hatred for me get in the way of the bands we are trying to promote. Just because you think I'm a douche bag doesn't mean you should make the bands that work with us suffer by not posting our news that we submit to you. That's the story, those are my thoughts. Some people are just not meant to get along and we're two of them. Water under the bridge.

If AP.net didn't exist, what would you be doing for a living?

Hopefully something where I could work for myself - I hate taking orders. I have what some might call a problem with authority. So maybe something in the record industry (although without AP I'm not so sure I'd enjoy that), maybe something in web-design, or maybe something completely off the wall. I've always wanted to write a book.

When an interview is done, why is it that some interviews stay above all other posts for a day or something so people see them and some of them just go down the list as new posts come in?

Sometimes the poster "stickies" the post so that everyone viewing the website that day will see the interview. This is done usually if we are posting a lot of news that day and we want to make sure that the interview is seen. It's all up to the newsposter, and I personally try to only let stickies stay up for 6 hours or so before I remove them.

When something negative about a band hits AP.net, why do you have to take it down immediately if the band complains?

It depends on what it is. There are negative things we've left up. If it's a personal issue (Pete Wentz n00dz) or a libel issue (not provable or sourced correctly) then I am going to remove it 99% of the time. That's just my personal feelings on how things should be handled. I'm not sure of the specific event you are talking about - so I can't answer it any better (sorry).

What bothers you so much about unsigned bands getting posted about on here. It is my opinion that those are the bands who need more attention then a band like Taking Back Sunday, or somebody like that.

Nothing at all bothers me about it - in fact, I've been the one trying to get more unsigned bands posted about on the website. I send in news to my newsposters that even they aren't posting (it's annoying me) and I've instructed Ryan Imof to post about any unsigned band he finds and wants to post on. I am not the one that goes through the news submission inbox any longer, so I don't decide what is deleted/posted. What I am going to do in the near future is have our newsposters post a few unsigned things a day, and save the majority of them until Saturday/Sunday (when our news is really slow) and have them post bulk posts on these days (ie. these 15 bands have new songs, these 20 bands have new tour dates, etc.) and hopefully this will give exposure to some knew bands and help our weekends be more active.

Where did the idea for this site first come from?

I kind of explained this in the "history" question. But basically for this version of AP (what it is today) - I thought there was a lack in the Internet for this genre. The other websites were too focused on what was or wasn't punk and I figured that I couldn't care less about what punk was. Pop-punk was my niche. Plus - I felt the internet was too stagnant and I wanted to build a website that was completely built on the community aspect. The interactivity and ability to comment/respond to everything on it was exactly what I wanted AP to be.

How early do you get albums before the release date?

It depends. Some albums a few months, others a few weeks, some that don't even have release dates yet. It usually depends on my relationship with the label/band/manager on when I get the CD.

Why do you live on bandwagons?

Interesting. Most of the bands you'd probably consider bandwagon bands (Cartel, Spill Canvas) have sold less albums then most of the "cool" indie bands (Sufjan Stevens, Bloc Party, Catpower). So what makes a band a bandwagon band? It has to be the number of people that listen to them, yes? Which is what bugs me about that term. It's only used to describe bands you don't like and it's used to attack another person's favorite genre of music or favorite bands. First, who cares? Does it matter what I like? Second, we don't live on anything - we post about what we love. That's just how it works. I don't get to pick what the next big thing is going to be - I just happen to have gotten lucky with being right a few times, and maybe we can take a little credit for helping make a few bands "the bandwagon." This website can be run by the users as much as the staff. You can send in news, review albums, add multimedia, and create an artist profile. Plus we have a huge plethora of forums for you to talk about music in - and if I see a bunch of people really getting into a band I always check it out. So, is it the bandwagon because everyone at AP.net listens to it? Or is it the bandwagon because everyone at Pitchfork listens to it? I don't care how many people listen to the music I like, I just care that I like it. If I like a "bandwagon band" so be it - at least I like it. I'll put money that the bands you listen to are more trendy in their respective genres then some of the ones I do. It's all relative to what you listen to, where you hang out, and what you're exposed to anyways.

Do you feel that cussing in your posts/reviews increases your self-esteem?

I have the mouth of a sailor. I swear more then I should. I don't know where it came from but I cuss at the worst times in real life too (and parents get pissed). I've given up trying to stop. They're just words that have had a horrible connotation attached to them by society. They add a little extra poignancy to my sentences and they make me - fucking me. Sorry if it offends you but I can't stop being who I am. I sure bet all your G rated movies get really old, really fast.

Can you give clear a reason for your distaste for Kelly Clarkson that is not close minded? Can you acknowledge the fact that she is a good singer? Considering the fact that everyone is "discovered" somewhere, do you think that what may be deemed "acceptable" for bands could be different for pure pop vocalists? Does knowing the fact that some of the most respected bands in rock history had hits that were written by someone else (just look at how many "great" bands covered Dylan songs) change your opinion at all?

One could argue that all distaste for any artist is close-minded in nature (like your bandwagon comment earlier). So I've never once said that I am not being close-minded in my distaste for Kelly Clarkson; I fully admit it. I won't acknowledge that she's a good singer because I don't think she is (lip-synching award shows is disgusting). I don't think that it's right for talented musicians, and songwriters, and singers to go unnoticed while a talent show winner can be handed a built in (rigged) fanbase. Albeit that fanbase has to sit through 50 hours of television, advertisements, and superficial manufacturing of an "artist" right before their eyes and still want to buy the album. That's what makes me sick. It's not so much my problem with the manufactured talent show winner as it is that my fellow peers can be so easily manipulated by this farce. I understand the Colonel Parker model of the music industry and the need for an image, but I don't like when that overtakes the music itself. Imagine if Elvis would have spent more time doing that thing he was pretty good at - making music. I think that the perpetuation of these kind of artists hurts music in general. The more they sell, the more it convinces the higher-ups that they are what they should be spending their money on signing/promoting that kind of artist. This in turn hurts the bands and music I love. I am not one of the people that thinks this music should "stay indie" and "stay underground" - I want to see my favorite bands explode on the mainstream. I want to see them get the recognition and credit I think they deserve. And this is not just about the "pop" marketplace - I love a whole lot in that genre (John Mayer, Rob Thomas, Josh Groban). I even like bands that don't write their own material (but I have less respect for them). What I don't respect is the force-fed "storyline" we're given for an American Idol finalist, and the way the winner is completely manufactured before our very eyes (new hair, new walk, new clothes, new talk) and that people just gulp it all up. The American public needs to build these people up to celebro-status just so they can bash them down a few years later. It's a disgusting cycle. It's absolute genius from a marketing perspective, but I think it hurts the evolution of music. Plain and simple. I refuse to believe that all the soccer moms buying the new Carrie Underwood or Kelly Clarkson wouldn't be able to find something else to listen to - something that wasn't chosen for them by a bunch of a phone calls. For me, music is personal, and while someone singing someone else's song can pull at the heartstrings (Colin Ray was a master at this) - I will never get the same feeling as I do listening to (even a poor singer) sing a song he wrote. Regardless of who you are - if you have to be someone you're not and let the marketing gurus shape you and your "sound" to make more money, I will have animosity toward you. And all of this is without me even getting into the fact that American Idol is a huge fraud.

Do you think being more respectful to other bands/people on here would change people's opinion about you having a huge ego?

I do have a huge ego. I'm not hiding anything in relation to how over-inflated my ego probably is, I am just extremly over-confident and don't believe in self-doubt. I am extremely proud of what I've created and of who I am. I have over-confidence busting from the seams. I won't apologize for that. Life is too short to spend it trying to please everyone or trying to convince people I'm not what I am. Genetics and evolution dictate that we can't all be the same person. We aren't a hive mind. Furthermore, I could be the nicest guy in the world and a select faction of the populace is going to hate me. It's a damned if you do, damned if you don't environment we live in.

What's up with Midtown?

Last I heard Gabe was focusing on his solo-project.

Has your opinion on the Nintendo Revolution changed?

Not at all. I think it's a stupid idea.

Who is your least favorite member on this site?

UncleRico!

Who is your favorite member on this site?

If you could change one thing about AP, what would it be?

The name.

What criteria do you look for in a reviewer? In all honesty, some tend not to be the best writers (with some exceptions), so what is the "je ne sais quoi"?

I don't think that writing capability hinders (or should hinder) someone from being able to tell you how they feel about music. I look for people that have a grasp on their musical taste, have progressive ideas, and are going to bring something new to AP. I look for those that will write on a consistent basis and have the passion to help make AP a better community. Anyone can write a review for this website (if you're a member), our staff writers just help me get through the insane amount of Cd's sent to us a on a daily basis.

Why do you actively censor/ban people/posts that criticize this website and yourself? What are your beliefs on free speech versus dissent?

This website is my home. It's where I spend 95% of my time, it's my baby, my creation, my livelihood, my job, and I'm paying to keep it running. In order for me to feel secure with being able to keep running this website, and happy with my life, there needs to be rules. I have a pretty thick skin - but if I walked into my home and saw graffiti on the walls discussing the 15 ways I fellatio my father on a Saturday night, I am going to clean it up. I would expect you to do the same thing. That's how I feel about things personally attacking me on my website. I am not paying the money I do (and putting all the time I do) into this so I have to be subjected to that. I can turn the other cheek for quite a while, but then there are times when I just can't take it anymore. I am only human. I very rarely (unless it's a repeat offender) ban someone completely from the website for more then a week. If someone has a real problem with me, or the website, they should take that out with me in a private manner - not spam my forum and continually attack me.

I've heard that the reward for reaching 5K are n00dz of Mr. Tate himself. Jason, can you confirm or deny this?

If you're an over the age of 18 female that weights less then 180lbs. Then maybe.

What is one aspect of web design/development you wish you were better at?

Optimization.

How much time do you spend on average per day on this website?

Probably 10-11 hours doing something that relates to the website.

Is there any part of your life that doesn't deal with music?

I love soccer and college basketball and I follow a bunch of teams. I also love to read and collect (and watch) my favorite TV shows on DVD.

At what point do you recall this site starting to become as popular as it is today?

When I changed the layout to it's current version - I think that's what really brought people in.

Can you please bring back who is on-line (at the bottom of the page)?

It's not there because of the strain and queries it was putting on the web-server, right now it's going to stay removed for that reason. I just added a third server to help power this website and until I know more about how we're running (when everything I am working on gets finished) it's going to have to stay off.

Do you download leaked albums before you get actual advances?

Only if someone else on staff sends it to me. But if we don't get the advance - I delete it. If I don't like it and know I won't buy it - I delete it. I've never been against downloading per se, I'm against downloading without purchasing (and against demos or unfinished versions of CDs hitting the net). The act of downloading/previewing/listening to an album doesn't hurt bands ... it's when that person keeps the album and doesn't buy it that the artist is hurt. The problem with downloading is that someone that knows how to download a CD - does it. Then he burns it for a few friends, and they spread it. This isn't right. If you look at your friend's CD case now days they're all filled with burned CDs. I hate seeing that. I hate that on the release date for a CD no one even wants to talk about it because they've already overplayed the album and are waiting for the next leak instead of the next release. I hate that people don't think it actually does hurt artists. I hate that people can't just buy the music they love. Downloading it early because you can't wait is one thing. Forgetting that moment you heard the first track, and loved it - and subsequently not purchasing the album is something else entirely. That feeling driving back from the record store with a new CD blaring is something I miss every single Tuesday.

(We have to keep up to date with what's coming out - if we don't, we fall behind our competitors. But there's no reason that we should be above the law and my staff knows this. I buy albums on a routine basis and (this bears repeating) I own every piece of music (minus some rare and live tracks) that's on my computer or iPod.)

Will you start advertising more?

Yep. Once AP is at a stage where I'm happy with what it is.

Are you the only member of the staff that gets paid?

The staff are technically paid with free CDs, clothing, and shows.

How far in advance are you usually booked for advertising, and how pricey is it?

I'm not exactly sure, it's all handled via indieclick.com. We sell on a CPM basis and that exact price fluctuates based on supply and demand. I've instructed those that sell for us to work with any budget.

What happened with Ryan Mills?

Ryan Mills thought he was bigger than the website. He thought he could get away with things even after being told not to do them because he was "so important" that I wouldn't think of firing him. He thought wrong and did things to personally piss me off - on purpose. He stopped doing what he was hired to do in order to have more people read his reviews - so I fired him.

Are you friends with any people from bands posted on this site and do you hang out with them? (Ex: After a BN show, do you and Jesse maybe go get some drinks?)

I am friends with a variety of bands, yes.

What band/group/kind of music do you absolutely abhor?

Aiden. I think this goth-image-rock is horrible.

Muffin or cupcake?

Muffins from Costco are amazing.

Has the way a band acted changed your opinion of them?

Yes. Yellowcard and Hawthorne Heights. The former made me hate them and the latter made me enjoy them.

How many free CD's do you actually get?

On a slow day 3-5, on a Monday 10-15.

Difference between the newer kids on the scene to the older ones?

When you get older you forget what it was like to be the newbie. I was listening to Blink182 when it was very "un-cool" to do it. Now, Blink's a respectable band in the "scene" and they're looked on as pioneers. Now, it's "un-cool" to like Fall Out Boy - I like them anyways, but you see what I'm getting at. What I don't like about the "newer kids" on the scene is how caught up they are in the fashion. I just don't get it. But, to each his own.

Have you ever gotten shit for liking certain bands?

Every single day. I've always gotten shit from someone about a band I like, it goes with the territory. I've gotten so used to it though and I go out of my way to call attention to it now. I'll wear a Cartel shirt to an Against Me show - things like that. It's funny how much people care what other people listen to.

Because of bands like Motion City and Panic! do you think the lines between indie label and major are disappearing?

The lines are shrinking - but there is still a line. Just the amount of money each can spend on an artist is phenomenal. MCS has sold around 125K albums on Epitaph - that's a huge success for them, and for their label. However, on a major label - that's almost considered a failure. The label could spend a few million on a bad band and probably push 125K of an album if they wanted. But as the lines continue to blur, we should see some changes. There's only 4 majors anyways (probably soon to be 3).

Could there be a demise of the indie record store?

There is a demise of the indie-record store. Starting in the 1990's the industry made a shift in their distribution and went away from the indie stores and toward the "big box" retailers (Best Buy, Target, Wal-Mart). These stores sell CDs at a reduced price (to bring more people into the store) and this shift has sharply reduced the amount of square footage that's alloted for record labels to "display their wares," this has in turn reduced the variety of titles available to the consumer. The industry is shooting themselves in the foot.

Where do you buy shoes?

I wear Rainbow sandals (http://www.rainbowsandals.com/) almost exclusively (unless it's cold and I am sporting my Macbeths (http://www.macbethshoes.com)).

What is the best advice you can give to someone aspiring to get a job in the music industry?

I think I kind of addressed this earlier. However, I think everyone should start by reading, "The Future of Music (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0876390599/sr=8-1/qid=1147478909/ref=pd_bbs_1/103-3186917-0078215?%5Fencoding=UTF8)" by Dave Kusek and Gerd Leonhard. If you're looking to start your own business I recommend "The Tipping Point (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0316346624/sr=8-1/qid=1147478938/ref=pd_bbs_1/103-3186917-0078215?%5Fencoding=UTF8)" by Malcom Gladwell and "From Good to Great (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0066620996/sr=8-1/qid=1147478961/ref=pd_bbs_1/103-3186917-0078215?%5Fencoding=UTF8)" by Jim Collins. The key is simple: learn everything you possibly can. Knowledge is power. Ask questions, shadow your idols, study the successful - and emulate, adapt, and build on what they've done. And the simple thing is: do it. The cliché stands true - the only thing stopping you is yourself.

If you were stuck on an island and could only take one person and one type of food, who and what would it be?

Person? It'd have to be the hottest girl I know. I mean, come on! I need to populate the island. For food, I'd want apples. They have some nutritional value and they have water in them so I wouldn't die so quickly. I also really like fruit - so that fits in about right.

Do you ever feel like you put too much of yourself out there for people to pick apart? Many of us hide behind user names and the like, but every one of your opinions, whether it be music or sports comes out on this website. Have you ever thought about starting up a second, secret user name and just trying to be "one of the rest"?

I don't really have anything to hide I guess. I am who I am, and I'm going to be judged regardless. There's no real reason for me to not stand behind my own words. I've said some stupid ass shit on this website (and it's documented) and I think I've said some pretty clever things as well. I have thought about setting up a fake user-name to post some disparaging remarks about a few bands - but I've never gotten around to it.

What is your current cell phone ringtone?

Angry Stewie (Family Guy)

Will you admit that you are super close minded when it comes to political discussions?

I'm close minded once I've made up my mind. I spend a lot of time coming to my decision on political topics. I read up on both sides with an open-mind, weigh the arguments, and then come up with my own "talking points" for each side. The one that fits with me the best, is the one I stand behind. I could probably argue the other side of my argument better then most of the people that I end up debating with in the forums.

What is your one favorite thing about AP.net?

That it's more then just me reading it.

Do you believe in the Loch Ness Monster?

Nope.

Would you ever change the name of the site i.e. "Absolutemusic" or something? I say that because your taste in music is pretty eclectic now - so few actual 'punk' bands get coverage here. That's not a bad thing by the way!

I'm sort of stuck with it. Absolutemusic.com is taken anyways. I like Absolute (it was originally picked because of it's alphabetical qualities) and so .. it works I guess. O well.

Why do Americans not like Irn-Bru? it's the best soft drink ever.

Never heard of it, it available in the states? I don't drink soda anymore - too much sugar.

If you were a pro-wrestler, what would your ring-name be?

Tatecore. I own one of the t-shirts.

Besides the fact it's Brand New, why is the album the album of the year?

I pick my favorite albums based on the emotional impact they've had with me. I made that comment in my journal as sort of a joke. But I still would bet good money that they're my favorite album this year. The Format is my current favorite - and I think Acceptance and Rise Against have a good chance at making a run at the top 5.

When the site was just starting up, I understand it started as a personal site, how did you spread the word about it?

The main kick happened when I convinced the guys running Blink182.com, NewFoundGlory.com, and FenixTX.com to post about it.

How did you make your contacts (ie: record label guys, band members, producers, etc) before the site was a major force in the community?

Emailed them and got rejected across the board. Then sat back and worked on making the website better, and getting the community set up. Then waited for them to come to me. It worked.

You've helped give exposure to some bands who are pretty big nowadays (TBS, Yellowcard, FOB, etc), how do you learn about new bands? I mean, I hear from new bands from this site, other sites similar to this one, various e-lists, sometimes recommendations, but that's about it. You seem to always have a continuous stream of new bands to be interested in. Or, better yet, when did you originally hear about these 3 aforementioned bands.

I listen to about everything that's sent to me or recommended to me by friends/staff/users. If I like it, I bookmark it. That's how I find new bands. I found Taking Back Sunday when Jesse Lacey emailed me and told me to check them out - I did, I told Jake Wallace about them, and he found a way to get me their CD. I found out about Yellowcard through punkrocks.net when I was in high-school. I was really into Rufio at the time, and YC's first CD (OFTK) reminded me of Rufio. I found Fall Out Boy because Pete Wentz was persistent as all hell. He emailed me, sent me Cd's, and harassed me until I finally listened to them (and about shit my pants that I hadn't listened to this guy earlier). I still have the Fall Out Boy / Project Rocket Split EP that is going to be worth millions someday.

Do you view people that visit this site customers in the sense that increased hits = higher ad prices? In that case, why does it seem that sometimes you act like it is a privilege to visit/post here or other types of people don't belong here in the first place?

No, I don't look at people as ad revenue. I have very little impact on how much ads are sold for, or how many times they are seen. I run the website and hope people view it. However, it is a privilage to post here. We have rules in place for a reason. After so many years of learning what works and what doesn't work (and what causes lawsuits and what doesn't) I've become jaded in putting up with the same shit over and over again. I can't let people post albums for download in the forums.

That blonde girl I banged in LA.. on a scale from 1 to 10 (1 being lowest and 10 being highest) how did she rank?

I thought she was underage. If she's 18, she's a 7 or 8. You'd let your friends know you hit it - but she may not be GF quality. I don't really remember though.

Do I owe you for half of that speeding ticket back in July?

People are going to have no idea what you're talking about. The back story is coming back from Warped Tour in Oregon, Jon Lally was in the car with me - and I got pulled over by an asshole police officer. I had the option of crashing my car, or breaking the law, so I sped up and made a safe lane change. I got pulled over for speeding. Prick. And no, you don't - but it's not like you couldn't afford it.

When/if Frank and Kelsey tie the knot, who has dibs on planning the bachelor party?

I do! I'll be hiring strippers and posting pictures on the website.

How you really felt about Joey?

Disappointing. It could have been so much better - but they didn't do it right.

What makes you guys hype a band over another? (i.e Say Anything, Cartel). Is it the work ethic or just your taste in their band?

It's whether or not I like it. I don't talk (hype) about music I don't like.

What are some of your favorite/least favorite memories from this site?

Favorites: Going to hang out with Fall Out Boy in the studio, the night at Kelsey's house with Yellowcard, hanging out in the back of Warped Tour with a bunch of bands, my 21st birthday with Over It, seeing my quote on Say Anything's album cover, getting the platinum plaque from FOB.

Least Favorites: Some of the "I hate Jason Tate threads," Boys Night Out's CD leaking, DTR yelling at me over the Midtown interview, knowing things I can't post, personal relationships being ruined because of this website, knowing things about bands I wish I didn't, and an overall loss of innocence when it comes to this scene and the music industry in general.

Do you find it weird that the people who visit this site think of you as a sort of celebrity?

Very weird. I mean, I'm not complaining - I enjoy the pseudo D-list celebrity status. But it's an awkward feeling. I can't imagine what actual celebrities must go through. But, it's funny at the same time because I'm this 23 year old kid from Oregon who loves Blink182.

Any plans to visit the Bay Area anytime soon?

Eh. Maybe. It's hard for me travel, if I'm away from the website - things don't work as well.

How did "The Leak" come about? Did you approach Cartel/The Militia Group or did they approach you? How does it work now?

Well, Cartel were signed to The Militia Group because of a post I made on this website - so, when their album was getting ready to come out the label contacted us and thought it'd be a cool thing to do. I agreed, and figured - we've never done this before - maybe we can help a band that we all love get some exposure. So we did it in return for the label running ads in magazines with our URL to the "leak." And from the success Cartel's having - I think it worked amazingly. Hopefully our current Sherwood feature will be as successful. Now days it works the same - people contact us, or we contact them, and see about the possibility of setting something up. The more I'm behind an artist/band - the more exposure the feature sees on the website (with the time-frame we have). I'm trying to branch out and get a wider variety of artists involved - and it seems to be slowly working. Hopefully someday we'll have all sorts of bands getting their music up on AP. At the very least, we started a few trends at some of the other webzines. Just wait until they see what I have up my sleeve next!

Saves the Day's In Reverie and TBS' Where You Want To Be were the first albums I ever saw you rip into on this Web site. I remember a quote from you a few years ago that, when accused of liking and hyping every CD ever created, you answered that this site was to promote the scene not tear it down through negativity. While I don't always agree with all of your recommendations (but I usually do), I really respected that quote and thought it was an awesome outlook. What was it about IR and WYWTB that made you push aside that outlook and lash out so brutally?

I think the new Ataris' album fits into this as well. Anyways, I just happen to want to talk about music I like more then music I don't like. However we all have days, or albums, where you just want to say something horrible. And there are a lot of CDs (the aforementioned) that I just can't stand. I usually keep my mouth shut. The way I look at it, who am I to potentially keep someone from discovering a band they may love? I used to read reviews and not listen to an album because of what that review said - I think with all the "previewing" abilities in the modern musical world, that's just not right. But there are some CDs that I just can't keep my mouth shut on - and if you read all my posts, there's a whole lot of posts that are not very nice to certain bands. Now days though, I try and keep it in the forums and not on the news page (like I regrettably did with STD and TBS in the past).

How much bandwidth is used and how many hits does AP get a month?

Hits, pageviews, visits, unique visitors, are all completely different things. I'm not sure exactly what you want .. and I don't really let all that information out anymore. We do very well - according to Alexa.com we're comparable with PN.org but not as big as Pitchfork.com (yet). During the day we never seem to have less then 1,000 different people browsing the website at any given time. That's pretty cool.

What made you realize that you have created the biggest website in our scene?

When Tom Delonge posted in our forums or when we kicked some ass in the Alt. Press reader polls. All of the tattoos that have sprung up recently has been a pretty shocking realization as well.

Why is there no preview button whenever you want to write a journal?

There isn't? Thanks! I added this to my "to-do" list. I browse the "suggestion" forum every week or so. If anyone else has other bugs/problems - please let me know.

What do you think of the Loose Change 9/11 video?

I feel that it brings up a whole lot of questions but not very many answers that I'm satisfied with. There's too much "fishy" stuff that went on for there not to be more we don't know. Something other then the official story happened, but I'm willing to bet we'll ever know what. Ignorance is bliss.

What bands do you personally think have "sold out" the most?

October Fall is number one. If you're on a (semi) indie-label, you have to at least pretend like you want to be an independent band. Basically announcing to the world that you want to be a mainstream band with your actions yet trying to sell yourself to the Fall Out Boy fans - isn't very cool (or the smartest marketing technique). I mean, don't get me wrong - I still think their songs are catchy as hell and I am caught listening to them every once in a while. But I think they sold out before they even had anything to sell.

What bands/people just piss you off and why?

Aiden (I hate glam-goth or whatever they are), Cute is What We Aim For (they just seem to be trying way too hard), The Click Five (so many reasons). As for people, I hate those that blame the world around them for their mistakes and don't take responsibility for the things they have done to get them into whatever situation they're in.

Did you ever read the other books in the Ender's Game series? If so, do you like the Shadow series that follows Bean better or the series that follows Ender. Did you find the ending of the Speaker for the Dead series to be too ridiculous?

I've read a few of each series, but haven't finished the series yet. I like the storytelling aspects of the Shadow series and the philosophical aspects of the Speaker series. Both have been fun to read and I plan on finishing up the other books when I have the time.

Why are the leaks such low quality audio?

The leaks are in 64kbps because anything higher means bigger file-size which means dial-up kids will have a hard time streaming and my bandwidth would double from the DSL kids. I don't know many visitors that have bad-ass systems hooked up to their computers anyways. I think Napster streams things in decent quality now, so if you're curious around the release date about buying an album and are skeptic from our streams - head over there.

What is your favorite Blink182 album and song?

Dude Ranch - the album changed my life and is basically the reason for this website. As for song, "Untitled."

Why have you chosen not to outsource to a better equipped web-design company to make the site state-of-the-art in all ways?

Money. I do alright because I've been able to keep the overhead low and find ways to make things work. I'm not claiming to be the best at webdesign or coding, or anything like that - but I know enough to get things done and save myself a buck. If I ever get a few million to play with, you can bet you're ass I'll be hiring someone to recode/optimize the website ... but until then, we'll have to make due.

Have you considered possibly turning absolutepunk.net into a magazine?

Yes, but what I think makes AP.net special is the instant access to information. You don't have to wait to get the news/reviews/features every month - you can get them with the click of a button. That's what I like. A version of a magazine may surface someday, but if I head in that direction you can guarantee I am going to shake up how the alternative magazine world is ran.

I don't know if this was already asked, but, AbsolutePodcast?

Soon. I am working on making sure we have the system in place to do it. It's on my list of things to do for the website but a little lower on the priority list.

How are your nips?

They could cut glass.

Did you play a part in all those awesome bands playin University of Redlands in the past or is it just a coincidence?

My good friend Eric Rowling was mostly in charge of the bands that came through Redlands.

Do you still think as highly of Vheissu as you originally did?

Yes. Lyrically and musically it's just as amazing. It shocks me that more people don't agree with me. What else are you looking for in music?

You're pretty well immersed in the music scene (obviously); you're involved to some degree with the smallest of independent bands to moderately successful bands to multi-platinum bands on major labels. You've watched bands move through these different levels and grow probably bigger than anyone could have predicted - not to mention you sometimes had (at least a small) hand in that growth. With all that being said, where do you personally see the music industry heading in the next few (maybe 10?) years? Will the independent scene continue to grow and expand, eventually becoming dominant over what is "mainstream" today? Will the major labels eventually catch on to where the music industry is headed and embrace it (and consequently try to direct it)?

My current thoughts on this are completely warped by the recent book I read (and have recommended) called "The Future of Music" (there's a link in this interview). I am very much of the belief that this book has hit it right on the nose. I think the industry needs to become more fluid, and adaptable. I do see the independent scene continuing to grow and expand. The lines are blurring and I think that in time and with some smart innovations, we could see the extinction of some of the old models. I can't recommend "The Future of Music" enough because it basically is my answer to this question - but in a much more coherent and detailed write-up. The thing is - that music can become like water, and we can ultimatly remove the record labels from the equation. I have a few things in mind to push AP in that direction and start helping bands do things DIY. Imagine being able to come to AP, read news on a band, listen to songs, buy the CD (via download or mailorder), and recommend the band to your friends with only a few clicks. That's the future. And all of this in real-time ... no huge wait while the album is shelved for 4 months by a label. I have things in the works to make AP work in such a way that we can help pave the way for change in the entire industry. I think people need to realize that tossing money at a band to make them sell records - hurts music as a whole, and that we can worry about the bottom line and the quality of a release at the same time.

Can I go out with your sister?

She's been dating the same guy for 2 years and is only 17.

How offended were you by question 1?

Not that offended, I've had worse asked.

Do you like having all the users here kissing your ass constantly?

I'd be lying if I said it wasn't flattering.

What are your thoughts on Chuck Norris?

From what I've read he has a black belt in Tang So Do. That's the same discipline of martial arts that I have a black belt in - so I like the guy.

If you could be one band right now, who would you be?

I want to do cow bell for The Format. They are everything I think pop music should be.

Were you a loser in high school?

I was friends with people in the "popular" crowd and I was friends with the biggest dorks in the school. My core group of friends (the 5 guys I've grown up a block away from since kindergarten) were the people I hung out with most. We drifted between cliques. I slept with all the "popular" guy's girlfriends though (which led to a lot of fights). So no, I wouldn't say I was a loser (but if I could go back in time, I'd kick my own ass for caring so much about what others thought of me). I like who I am now a whole lot better then who I was then.

Have you ever been part of FNT or any other of the "scene" groups that leak music?

Do they hand out membership cards? Anyways: No. Absolutely not. This story came about because I used to trade music for review/coverage with a former staff member of this website. He was involved in the leaking group "FNT" - and was fired from AP for a variety of reasons. Cd's I sent him might have ended up on the Internet, but I don't know for sure and I would be appaled if they did. Our staff does send eachother albums to check out from time to time, but the policy is iron-clad: If you send it to anyone outside of our staff - you're fired on the spot (I tag everything I send to staff for tracking purposes). We do not tolerate it at all and the trust of record labels is absolutely fundamental to the success of this website. If an album leaks early it hurts AP.net. We live off of being the first to review a CD, the first to post news, the first to be talking about a "hot" album. If that CD is out there it greatly diminishes our ability to do just that. I have never been a part of any group, and I do not condone what these groups do. I understand people checking out bands and finding new music, and I even understand people wanting to hear Cd's early. What I do not understand is the leaking of demos, the leaking of unmastered albums, and how many people only download albums and never purchase them. I own the physical copy of every album (with the exception of a handful of b-sides and live tracks) that I have on my computer. I expect my staff to follow the same rules - and I only send MP3s to my staff if they need the CD for a review/feature/interview or coverage on this website. I hope this finally puts this bullshit behind us. The defamation by disgruntal ex-employees and other douche-bags lying to try and bring us down is pretty pitiful. Furthermore, I request that most the music sent to me personally, be watermarked so there is no confusion if an album leaks that I had absolutely nothing to do with it.

What do you consider the fine line between posting a small bands news or ignoring it and posting the next time Jesse Lacey shits publicly?

If a small band has a news-worthy post, it will be posted by me. I don't go through our submission box anymore (that's delegated to the rest of staff) - so if they're not posting it, that's because they felt there were too many other items that day that were more crucial. Brand New is a ginourmous band in the scene and especially around this website. Their news (regardless of what it is) draws visitors and discussion. To me - that's demand by my visitors - so I supply them with what I can.

What kind of car do you drive?

1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I received it from my parents as a graduation gift. It eats gas.

Top or bottom?

Top. But you gotta switch it up.

On what grounds do you feel entitled to your spouts of elitism?

Everyone on this website judges music, that's what an opinion does to someone. Not everyone will like the same thing. This difference in opinion is what makes horse racing possible. The fact that I'm who I am, and I speak my mind in a rather brash and condescending tone - makes people think I'm being more "elite" than others. The truth is I'm just sharing my opinion as much as the next guy. I simply have been doing this (posting, arguing, discussing) longer then most of the people on this website and so the way I respond sometimes comes across wrong. As I've said before - I am extremely overconfident. I believe in what I'm saying - otherwise, I wouldn't say it. I'm not trying to be "elite" - I just come across that way I guess. People look to tear apart anything I say - regardless of my original intention.

Do you enjoy pleasuring the anatomy of bands such as Thrice and Thursday?

Yes. If you had a website as big as AP.net, and didn't use it to promote the bands you love - I'd judge you. I'd think you were doing a disservice. I like Thrice and Thursday - I think both bands have a grasp on what music should be, I think sharing this opinion with my readers is why people keep coming back to this website. The point of AP.net is to open discussion up on the music. I don't know how much clearer I can make this: I like talking about music! Shocking! I'm sorry it offends you so greatly.

Did you end up missing out on all of your high school writing classes?

No but I read Walt Whitmans Leaves of Grass and decided that how you Write doesnt really matter as long as your Point gets across and you are able to convey an image to your readers -- I write like I think (which is sporadic and haphazard). Yes, it's written that way on purpose.

I'm not an english major. I'm not a novelist. Does how many times I hit shift+f7 on my computer really matter? If you want me to spend an extra 3 hours, I'll make my writing look like it went through a pitchfork filter - but I couldn't care less. At least people are reading what I write.

I used to run a website a few years ago with 1000+ users, and way before that, a webzine with 1000+ members. These numbers are shit compared to AP, and also, my projects never went on to be named in huge press outlets (though AOL did do some news on the webzine in the day) or songs by MC Lars. AP.net is well-known in this music scene. I received much hate mail, virus attempts, practical jokes, and all sorts of stupid shit back in the day..even people registering AOL, not AIM, accounts like "ACA Is Gey" and stuff like that---and my projects were dinky compared to AP.net. My question, then, is how do you respond to this, because I know you must experience it. A day doesn't go by where someone mocks/criticizes you, Jason, on these boards. I always took it in stride, and I actually found it quite flattering---but the "attacks" on you appear to be more common, and on a bigger scale.

I put myself out there - and I'm not ashamed of it. I know I'm hard to take sometimes (hell, people that are my best friends have punched me in the face) - but that's okay, because I know that enough people "get" me and are able to look past the stupid shit I do or say and focus on the end result. Sometimes it gets to me and it all makes me feel like shit. However, lately I've realized that no one hates the unsuccessful and unimportant. So I use the hatred to fuel me and give me a reason to keep doing this.

How did you feel knowing one of the largest IRC pirate places took its name from your creation?

It pisses me off. But it sure is fun getting them shut down or kicked off servers all the time.

What's the coolest freebie you've gotten from a band/label?

The platinum plaque Fall Out Boy sent me meant more to me then anything I've ever gotten from this website. The owner of 111 Records once sent me a Bonsai tree (which I still have) because I let some of his bands crash at my place one night. That was pretty rad as well.

Do people recognize you at shows?

Yes, but I try to be discreet. It's still a little weird for me. However, if you do recognize me - come up and say, "hi." I like talking to the readers of the website, and let me know if you have any suggestions or ideas. I'm easily approachable - but please don't ask me to hook you up with backstage passes or anything. I have a hard enough time asking for them myself (seriously) and I don't like burdening bands.

What are your top handful of websites (other than AP) that you visit/contribute to/etc?

Fark.com, Tuckermax.com, Google news, Soccernet.com.

When Real Madrid got knocked out of Champions League, do you just stop talking about soccer all together or only stop in the Soccer threads?

I was pissed. I haven't been following it as much lately because Real Madrid are fucking pissing me off. Then Rooney gets hurt and I am wanting to die.

I think I already know your answer, but Arsenal or Barca in the final?

Arsenal. I hate Barcelona.

Do you follow the Premiership and if so, what team?

Yes. Manchester United and Liverpool.

Who do you think will win the World Cup?

I wanted England so bad, but their run of bad luck and their moron of a manager makes me think Brazil has the best shot. I'll be cheering for the USA team as well (unless they are up against England).

Who do you think is the best lyricist in the "scene" today?

Jesse Lacey. The things he does with words makes me weep with jealousy.

What are some the factors that keep you going so strong after all these years besides your great love of music.

The compliments from visitors or reading a comment that says, "woah, I checked these guys out - great CD." When someone else can find a new band because of us - I know why I am doing what I do.

In the privilege of receiving music early from bands and publicity, do you ever feel extremely pressured into doing something such as advertisements for your site?

Nope. Anyone can buy ads, I don't have much say over that whole thing. But I only feature what I (or the staff) think deserves to be featured.

Have you ever turned advertisement money down or refused to work with a band on your site because of disliking there music or disagreeing with there message.

Well, I stopped posting about Senses Fail altogether for a while. But then I realized that my grudge with them doesn't mean others don't like them. I hate Aiden and a few other bands - but I know my readers like reading about them (well, maybe a few of you do) and so I think it's my duty to keep posting about them. I won't ever feature an artist I disagree with though and there are a few parties I would reject advertising money from if they ever tried to buy any spots. However, they know how I feel, so I'm not too worried.

What would you say is the greatest lesson you've learned in working with this huge forum fronted site after all these years?

That someone will love you and someone will hate you for everything you do. Trying to please them all, is pointless.

What do you think of IB?

I wish there was a middle of the road program. IB is too intense for some people and the regular classes are a joke. At my high-school the "AP" classes were the same as the IB classes, you just didn't take the IB tests.

Was it worth it, and did you get your IB diploma? If so, how do you feel about it?

I didn't get my IB diploma. I graduated from my high-school's honor program (take all the IB classes, but don't take the tests at the end). I had a falling out with the head IB councilor (I basically called him an old pervert with favoritism to girls with large breasts) and dropped his IB psychology course my senior year of high-school. I needed that to complete the diploma so I said fuck it (and was finally able to drop my Spanish class).

Least favorite book?

"The House of Spirits" by Isabel Allende.

In Portland, favorite place to see/hear/buy music ... venue/radio station/music store?

Rock and Roll Pizza (good sound, good pizza). I buy my music from Amazon.com or Fred Myer. I don't listen to the radio.

Have you ever sold albums that you received for free on eBay, in a record store, to a friend, etc etc.

Nope, they're all in the basement of my parent's house (alphabetized by my mother). Maybe I should sell them, is that against the law? Probably.

Do all the promotional album copies come to your address or do labels/publicity/bands send multiple albums to each staffer that would consider it for review? If yes the the latter part, about how many copies of each album does the average label/publicity/band send out for someone at AP.net.

Some labels do - we've offered them that possibility if they would like it. I don't like bands sending out more then one copy though (because it costs them money). We have a decent system set up at the moment and I am working on making that system even better and easier for all parties involved in the near future.

What happens to all the metal/hardcore/heavy albums that come to AP.net (from labels like Deathwish, Bridge 9, Thorp, Metal Blade, Century Media, Relapse, etc, etc). These are hardly ever reviewed and judging from the "What's in the mailbox" it appears that you are receiving them.

I am trying to find someone reliable to review them! Those reviewers never stick to the genre or they stop writing 2 weeks after I hire them.

All personal feelings aside, do you think that Ryan Mills was the best natural writer that has ever contributed to AP.net.

If you look at grammar and ability to use a thesaurus, then yes. However, I look for other things in a writer. Writing a review because you have passion for an album - not that you just want it to be read by the most amount of people - matters to me.

Why do you have someone posting movie news every week?

Because I think it's a fun feature and people seem to like it. Why not expand a little bit? Doesn't hurt anyone and adds value to us.

How often to you actually attend shows/concerts?

When a band I really want to see comes into town. I usually fade into the background though. Maybe twice or three times a month? Unless I love a band I don't usually go see the same band twice though.

What albums have you paid money for in 2006?

Morrissey (2 copies), Anti-Flag, Brandtson, Hit the Lights, Anathallo, Latterman (didn't buy it last year), Goo Goo Dolls, and Red Hot Chili Peppers (today actually).

Do you consider yourself a music geek. The kind that is constantly searching for rare albums online or in the used album bin at a mom & pop shop? Or do you generally just stick to the bigger releases that come in for free?

If a band's in my top 30 (or I've been listening to them a lot) I don't rest until I have a copy of every single song they've ever recorded. I'm obsessive.

If you had to rate your knowledge of music, albums, and bands on a scale of 1 to 10, what would you give yourself?

I'm cocky - a 10. I like what I like and find reasons for liking it after I've already decided I do. I don't need to quantify or qualify my ability to like something.

Are you happy to see that sites like RockingTheScene.com and UtterPunk.com are all-but inactive?

If their owners don't have time to run full websites I'd love for them to join us. They have progressive ideas and a different take on the entire webzine world that we could use to help make AP.net better.

What do you think of the new PunkNews.org design? They now have band pages and album streams. How does this affect the competition with them?

I like it. I hope we had something to do with them changing, that would make me happy. It's a better website now and I read them daily. I have so many ideas flowing through me - that I know we'll keep evolving as well. So it's healthy.

What webmaster/webzine owner do you admire the most?

Aubin at PN.org or Jordan at Pastepunk.com.

What five webzines do you read on a daily basis?

I read every single one that I know exists. If I don't know what everyone else is doing, I can't make sure we're better.

Do you still avoid reading Alternative Press because of Scott Heisel?

No, I don't read it because I'm cheap and usually know all the information in it already. I subscribe to Playboy and Maxim - that's enough bathroom reading material for each month.

What do you think of Victory Records?

I don't agree with their business practices or the way they treat some of their bands. However, as a pure business - I think Tony's a genius. The problem will be if they can evolve and adjust (their recent battle with itunes and not finalizing the deal with a few of the bands they've wanted makes me think they aren't).

How often do you know about a signing to a big label (Victory, Vagrant, FBR, Equal Vision) before it is actually announced?

All the time. And I absolutely HATE that we can't post it. It's not fair that just because we're big now I have to sit on stories that little webzines get to run with because no one reads them. That's lame and makes me lose my competitive edge. Whatever.

Do you think that the reviews on AP.net are always fair?

If a review is written, how is it not fair? Do you mean if someone is friends with or likes a band and they give it a favorable score? I encourage passion from my writers - it doesn't bother me when an author is honest.

Do you like the band Aiden? If yes, WHY?

No.

Do you honestly like any music that Jade Tree has released, new or old?

New Mexican Disaster Squad's new album is awesome. They've also released stuff from Alkaline Trio, Hot Water Music, Lifetime, Strike Anywhere, and Denali. I like all of those bands.

What's your size in girls pants?

No clue. I wear 32Wx30L jeans in men sizes.

Would you consider voting for a third-party candidate in the next presidential elections?

Yes.

How many unique hits do you get a day?

I don't like giving the exact numbers, but it's greater then 60,000 unique visitors a day.

How many repeat hits do you get a day?

72% are repeats according to Google analytics.

Name a show or CD that REALLY made you think, "This is completely epic. This music makes me feel infinite, progressive, the paradigm of greatness."

Deja Entendu by Brand New

Favorite Lifetime song?

Irony is for Suckers.

Favorite girl scout cookie?

Tagalongs.

If you were a hooker, how much would you charge? I think $50 is expensive for a blowjob. I mean, I've never asked for one or gotten one (lacking equipment), but I saw this documentary on HBO where she was charging like $50. I think she could take her teeth out, so maybe that was why it was so much. She said it was the best ever. But I mean, really, isn't that a bit much? You tell me.

$200. I'm good in bed and have a huge dick.

Any bands you love recorded but can't stand live?

Copeland.

Who would you kill to see a reunion from?

The Smiths, The Movielife, Jawbreaker, and Blink182.

Would you ever fly across the country for a show/festival with an amazing line up?

I will fly anywhere I have to the next time Morrissey is in the states.

Who's your favorite staff member?

Jared Kaufman. I've know him forever and we talk almost daily.

Star Wars or Lord of the Rings?

Star Wars.

How big did you expect AP.net to get when you were making the transition from a decent Blink 182 fansite (great site, but you didn't show your great designing skills till this site), to an all around punk site?

I always had delusions of grander. I wanted us to be as big as we are - and to be honest, I want us to be bigger. I'm not close to satisfied yet. You'll see.

Ever talk to former "nemesis" Matt Saunders (man-overboard.net) anymore?

Hahahahahahaha. Amazing question. Nope. I wonder what that guy's up to. That "feud" made me work my ass off.

If you get assassinated, who takes over the country...errr...site?

Morbid. I'd like my parents to auction it off and use the money (if it's a crap load) to put my sister through college and repay themselves for my education. Then I hope they donate a bunch of money to some foundation that will help musicians when in need, and keep the rest so my dad can retire. Hopefully someone awesome buys the site and keeps it like it is - but hey, if I'm dead, someone can just point the domain name at sluttygirlsrus.com for all I care.

On that note - I've finally finished! That SOB was long. Thank you to everyone who submitted questions, I really appreciate it! I hope I answered the questions to your satisfaction. If not, or if you have additional questions or follow-up questions, please look out for a second round in the future (may be a while, I have a lot of stuff to do on AP first). Take care and thank you for visiting this website, it means so much to me - and although I may come across as an asshole at times, I really do appreciate every single one of you. I understand that some people don't like me, and some people don't like this website. However, I think there are enough ways that those viewing this website can change what's being talked about on here. So here's to you - and here's to many more years.

Do you know a girl named Maja? She's a total a whore and claims to be a victim of everything.

I do not. Never heard the name before in my life. I hope she claims she slept with me though, that's be fucking awesome.
haha, nice

How do you feel about This Day & Age?

Love them. Their new demos sound great.
Good to hear

Is there any part of your life that doesn't deal with music?

I love soccer and college basketball and I follow a bunch of teams. I also love to read and collect (and watch) my favorite TV shows on DVD.
I already can't wait for next season...and it's only been a month

That blonde girl I banged in LA.. on a scale from 1 to 10 (1 being lowest and 10 being highest) how did she rank?

I thought she was underage. If she's 18, she's a 7 or 8. You'd let your friends know you hit it - but she may not be GF quality. I don't really remember though.
haha...I wish you had put who asked this question...

But I think they sold out before they even had anything to sell.
agreed...the tour with Ashley Simpson, and then I forget the second one, basically set them up for that label

If you could be one band right now, who would you be?

I want to do cow bell for The Format. They are everything I think pop music should be.
I'm excited for the new album

CircaEnder

1) i'm so glad "don't you hate pants?" made it into the interview, that is great whoever asked that

2) the new nintendo will kick so much ass

3) the pirsig book is great

4) man funny you say that about copeland, i saw them tonight at cornerstone and i was blown away by how awful the set started off. i've never heard aaron's voice that bad before. usually they are really really good to me. they ended well though, and played a new song which was fine. and aaron did the jesus song with underoath, yay!

p.s. i think you are cooler now, but still not nearly as cool as me.

jesus christ that was long. it's now 3:30 AM and my mom's gonna be pissed when i sleep through mother's day. i wonder how many people here were actually around for the mxpx/blink fansite. i was there and remember seeing the site go through a couple versions before it disappeared and later returned in fall of 2001 with news on all kinds of bands i hadn't heard of then (despite what my low post count and relatively recent join date suggest). hell, i even stole my screen name/user name from the original ap mascot (the kid with the star on his shirt), only to regret it semi-daily when i get im's from kids looking for slight variations of "waggy182". anyway, as much as a lot of the shit posted on this site pisses me off, i must say i learned of many of my favorite bands through it, so keep up the (mostly) good work.

Jason, even though your interview made interesting reading, just that bit about that incident with your writers bagging out F.O.B. and you not liking it is a bit sad.
It seems to me like you have "your bands" and if anyone was to take the shine off them, you'll crack up, whether the cd is good or not.
You can't let someone criticise something when it is deserved. WHICH IS WRONG.
I thought the new FOB was very ordinary. You seriously need to stop letting your feelings towards bands get in the way of the reality of the situation (ie. that the band you love might have released a pile of shit). Its called journalistic detachment from the subject matter.

Thats my rant.
The end.

What bothers you so much about unsigned bands getting posted about on here. It is my opinion that those are the bands who need more attention then a band like Taking Back Sunday, or somebody like that.

I've instructed Ryan Imof to post about any unsigned band he finds and wants to post on. This is true. I have found a lot more recently (that are good) that I will begin covering soon.

just how *rare* is the fall out boy / project rocket ep? or what makes it so special? i ask because i own one that's never been open before and i know if it was ever worth a million bucks an unopened one would be pretty solid.

I have it as well. I guess I really wasn't aware that it was anything special. Other than it being early FOB and TJ ex-Spitalfield's old band.

If it's a FACT that your music taste is better than mine then why aren't Lawrence Arms a multi-platinum band?...or is 99% of the world just blind to the "facts"?

Haha...I can't believe I made this interview.

Well, here's the real truth between Jason and I. Yes, I stopped doing reviews. I just got tired of working for the site, so they let me go without notice. I wasn't too bummed about it, so I just let it go.

And yes, I did/do call Tate a "preppy bro." The dude shouldn't take so much offense to it (they're just words, homie!). I met him at the Fall Out Boy show in Hollywood and he wasn't exactly the nicest of fella's, so I now judge him based on that night.

But I NEVER went around telling people I was from AP.net. That's incredibly stupid, so I would never do such a thing. I did sponsor shows here in Denver where I went on stage (only to announce the prize winner), and obviously, I'd introduce myself.

And yes, I do still get into shows for free, but only because I have made friends with certain band members/record label employees. I no longer receive CD's. Once in a while I'll get something from a shitty label/band, But that's about it.

And Jason...if you're reading this, be a man and IM me. I've tried to put all of this behind us and you never respond (well, you never responded when I worked there, so who am I kidding). Don't always believe what you hear...it's not always true.

Dave Gaslin, Nicole, and another current staff member all told me about you going around at shows thing. If it's not true, then good (and sorry for saying it was, I'm just going off of what I was told) - but it's weird that three people all collaborated that same story.

I met you for 30 seconds at a show while a band was playing and you judge me off that? Haha, okay. What was I supposed to do? Preppy bro > indie-hipster. :D

Haha, I was just asking....I am a "prep" too and always have been. I think it is funny when all the people are dressed the same at shows, with their girl jeans and studded belts.

I can't wait.

i didn't realize you and fall out boy were so close. i know i've made some jokes about them and pete wentz on here and you've responded kinda harsh about it but now i realize why and i think thats kinda cool that they're that close with you. you're kinda like a momma bird (hopefully without the regurgitating of worms)

Dear Jason,

Firstly, I would like to say that was fucking long. But worth reading. The only other thing I would like say is that I love coming to this website daily but I've always felt a minor to sometimes major dislike towards you based on some of your views (while I did agree with some things you say, I most of times didn't) UNTIL I read this interview. I have a huge regret for any dislike I've had for you. FYI, if I disagree with something you say, I won't say to myself "I hate this guy," because I now respect you.

Thanks for changing my views on the man who wastes more of my free time than Tom of myspace. Hahahaha. You've should of done something like this awhile ago.

Sincerely,

Moe

Ever talk to former "nemesis" Matt Saunders (man-overboard.net) anymore?

Wow! I came across this article when ego-surfing my own name (as you do). After a little deeper reading I see I am mentioned a few times on this here forum - I honestly didn't think that "feud" would be remembered by anybody!

Those certainly were good times and just like you I learned a hell of a lot about web development because of it. If anybody is bothered I work as a freelance web designer now in the wonderful city of Leeds (UK), where I live with my girlfriend and try my best to keep up with the local music scene, fast paced as it is.

Really good to see how big AP is now. The work gone into it is immense and it's grown a LOT, so it's success is totally deserved, well done Jason.
