Network neutrality (the idea that every website is treated equal) is still in limbo (http://www.oregonlive.com/editorials/oregonian/index.ssf?/base/editorial/114746551946890.xml&coll=7). Drop your congressman (http://www.house.gov/writerep/) a line and let him know that internet neutrality is important to you. For more information on this topic, check out Google (http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&ned=us&q=neutrality).

"For example, few would disagree that the Internet should be free of discrimination, that a user should have as unfettered access to a suburban teen's fan site as he does to Disney.com. "

"few would disagree"? what the fuck are they talking about? i think i would DEFINATELY disagree that children internet users should have unlimited access to all web sites.

network neutrality is ridiculous if you think every teenager and child should be able to have "unfettered access" to any porn site and bomb-making site out there.

so why dont they believe everyone should have "unfettered access" to all television stations, too?

I think you are misunderstanding what Net Neutrality is. It isn't about blocking access to sites for kids.

What net neutrality says is that ISPs have to be neutral when it comes to sending content. Without net neutrality, if Google decides to pay Verizon, Verizon can "discriminate", by speeding up google for its customers but slowing down or blocking other search engines.

Net neutrality says that ISPs should treat all servers equality, not dedicate special piplelines to other services.

Check out Save the Internet (http://www.savetheinternet.com/). Its got information about what Network Neutrality is. They also make it easy to sign the petition and it'll automatically send a letter to your congresspeople saying you support network neutrality. If the COPE Act passes Congress we could all get royally screwed over so definitely go to the site and do what you can to promote this thing.

Also, check out this video they made (http://www.youtube.com/v/l9jHOn0EW8U) over at YouTube.

One warning on this... there's a lot of propaganda from the big telecom companies like AT&T. They'll claim that the laws they're trying to pass are a benefit to consumers by limiting Congressional oversight and regulation of the internet and allowing free trade to go its course. Normally, this would sound appealing to me, but in this case it hurts us. Here's an example of how.

Say, for example, Congress doesn't end up regulating the internet. If the COPE Act passes, then the telecom companies can discriminate against web sites based on financial interests. If they partner with Yahoo!, then they could slow down access to Google or block it. If they don't like AbsolutePunk.net's wild musical styles and think the emo kids are running to wild, they could block it. This would SUCK.

So go sign the petition. Click the image earlier in the post.
