I just dipped into this Swedish electronica duo's fourth album, Silent Shout today and was curiously pleased by what I found. As a fan of music who is admittedly partial to traditional instruments, a purely-electronic album was not something I'd anticipate being so intrigued by, but Karen Dreijer Andersson's (Fever Ray) eerie, pitch-shifted melodies laid amongst watery, electronic beats is considerably more accessible than I'd anticipated after seeing the video forWe Share Our Mothers' Health the first time. Screw MGMT; The Knife is pop for hipsters. :-d

I don't really expect much to come of this thread, I just wanted to see what others had to say. Silent Shout is interesting, but I have no idea how regularly I'd listen to it.

Spoons:
- The Knife
- Silent Shout
- Their other albums
- Fever Ray
- Sweden
- Electropop

I love "Heartbeats" off Deep Cut - so catchy. Both albums are great all around though.

Like a Pen was probably my favourite track off of Silent Shout. Definitely intend to pick this one up. If an album is interesting enough to me that I feel I need to play it at least twice in a row, it's usually a good indicator of my appreciation for it.

grab everything that you can by the knife they're amazing, once I started listening to them I got addicted pretty quickly. check out royksopp as well they're from norway and karin has contributed vocals to a couple of their songs (that's how i found out about the knife, i wondered who the girl with the awesome voice was). MGMT doesn't even come close to either of these groups.

I'm actually really wanting to listen to this album again, but refuse to do so until I purchase it.

There, put up videos for people too lazy to go listen to a whole album.

I just listened to Deep Cuts the first time the other night, and I've just got to say that ending the album on Hangin' Out was a horrible decision, because I can't really remember anything else of the album except how crass that one song was. Pity.

The other day I decided to listen to this band. I listened to the first two songs off of Silent Shout and shut it off. Either I was really not in the mood, or I will never get this band.

They're okay, but Saetia's lyrics are better than The Knife's because of passion and shit.

Love Slient Shout.

I'm pretty interested in the idea of an electronica opera though, I must say.

Deep Cuts was patchy. All I really remember about it was the last song, which is a horrible way to end an album and a bad note to remember it on.

The new opera album is pretty cool. Discovered Silent Shout back in October too, really enjoy it. Especially We Share Our Mother's Health.

I'm so glad that you like them. They've opened me up to alot of new electronic music.

I definitely never expected to be a fan of anything like The Knife. I imagine them opening doors for me too.

Trust me, it definitely will. With the discovery of The Knife, I was able to start enjoying bands like Boards Of Canada, jj, Daft Punk, Amon Tobin, Four Tet, Owen Pallett, Aphex Twin, etc. I know not one of those is the same, but I find similarities in all of their music.

Have never listened to the duo, probably should do so at some point.

Silent Shout is a terrific album, one of my favourites, but I find going backwards in her discography is a bit underwhelming.

Surprised there's been no mention of Fever Ray yet, other than in the original post? Almost as good as Silent Shout for me. Almost.

I know your life of ageism is rough, and I'd hate to add to it, so I'll leave it at that (I never "leave it at that").

Fever Ray seems like a bit of a pointless monkier. I realize that it's a solo album, but it really doesn't stray from The Knife. Kind of disappointing in that respect. I wish that if she was going to go out there alone, she'd have done something really different from The Knife.

I really like The Knife but I really hate Fever Ray. Is this weird at all?

Chromefox
02/21/10, 04:04 PM
Kind of, since they're so much the same.

Well, I wouldn't say they're THAT similar.

It's not exactly a grand departure though. Fever Ray feels like it could have been another Knife album.

It's the small details and departures that make or break an album, though. All I know is, I really didn't enjoy Fever Ray.

Nothing wrong with that, and thinking about it, it's not really weird either. If it were a Knife album, it would just be your least favourite. That's reasonable.

I had to find this because The Knife is one of my favorite bands lol Definitely my number one favorite Indie band.
