View Full Version : "hardcore" dancers....why?

I am just curious as to the thought process of a hardcore dancer. I personally find the act unpleasant. I may be hypocritical in saying so because I love to mosh but let me know all of your opinions. Maybe one of you will convince me to change my mind on hardcore dancing.

I think its kewl BUT only when u stuck at a show with really shit bands and people do that "hardcore dancing" shit till the band they actually came to see comes on and they actually listen.
It's retarded. Just like moshing. If you've got some pent up anger to deal with go get into a fight somewhere else. I'm at this concert to watch the band/listen to the music, and I don't need to deal with some bunch of dumbasses running around and shoving everyone. Grow the fuck up.

Hilarious. This takes place at hardcore shows because it's part of the culture, and bands that play hardcore music would often even encourage this. It's a way of participating in the music because you like it that much.
I doubt any of the naysayers in this thread have been to a real hardcore show, Tough guy stupidity is annoying, but we don't get alot of that around here. If you don't like getting hit, then move away from the pit or start going to more pussy shows.

Everything has its place. If you want to go to a hardcore show and act like a dumbass, all the best to you. If you want to go to a Blink-182 show and start running around smashing into people, wrong show.
If you had knowledge of the hardcore scene where things like this took place then I would accept your opinion of people who do this being 'dumbasses' but your judging something you know very little about from the sounds of it.
The Blink 182 scenario sounds lame, no objection there, but it should be different for the scene of music. If you're had a hipster show or something, kids will probably dance. If you're at a metal show kids might be headbanging. If you're at a blink 182 show you might be wondering why you wasted so much of your money and time. There are certain things that come with each genre/subculture, and in hardcore there tends to be moshing and stagediving and such. You shouldn't place judgment on a scene you're not immersed in/hold no relevance to.
If you're only referring to kids moshing at shows where it's out of place, ie blink, then I understand what you're saying.

If I'm going to a "hardcore" show, then I will expect to be kicked in the head at least twice no matter what. But if I'm going to see Fleet Foxes or something and someone starts kicking and flailing their arms like a drowning idiot, I'm allowed to be pissed off.

what's wrong with my favorite albums?
There are two things that bother me with hardcore dancers: 1) They throwdown to the strangest bands(Hit the Lights, Before Their Eyes) 2) They can never have enough room and are only happy when they knock the shit out of someone just standing trying to enjoy a band.
Ehh Hit The Lights has some breakdowns so it's to be expected. Don't be near the pit you wont get hit. That unintentionally rhymed.

hardcore dancing and mosh pits are why shows suck these days. You cant even enjoy a band you like without getting pushed around or fucked with.

I am just curious as to the thought process of a hardcore dancer. I personally find the act unpleasant. I may be hypocritical in saying so because I love to mosh but let me know all of your opinions. Maybe one of you will convince me to change my mind on hardcore dancing.
So you enjoy doing one silly act but dislike the other? Cool. That's fine. Personally, I think they both look stupid, but I'd never ask "why do they do it?" Clearly, it's a fun form of expression for those who partake in it. Where's the fire here?

I think it looks ridiculous, but people enjoy it, and it's a significant part of that community, so who really cares?
Who cares? Kids who need to prop themselves up by tearing down the acts of others. Let kids have fun. Why is it an issue. I can't wait until standing around at shows and just watching is no longer hip, and kids will complain about how I'm looking stupid and a poseur because I'm not jumping around. When did everyone decide as a collective that they could define what was and wasn't acceptable at shows and for consuming the music they were seeing?

Its not that I hate it but my viewpoint as someone that lives in Grand Rapids is a little influenced by the sheer mass amount of scene/hardcore kids. That is pretty much all of the people that populate the shows. I don't mind if the person hardcore dancing is actually good at doing it but in my experience those type of dancers are few and far between. Most of them thoughtlessly flail their arms and legs with no regard for their surroundings. Even as someone who is moshing I look out for the people that do not wish to participate in the pit.

I don't know, maybe if you tried it you'd like it? Doubt it if you already think it's stupid. The only way I can really explain it is I just fucking love breakdowns. I probably sound like SUCH an idiot for saying that, but whatever. I dance at shows, and I mean it's just sort of a way to feel that type of music. What do you all that hate dancers do at hardcore or metalcore shows, just stand there? If so, I garuntee people who dance are having more fun than you. It's the same thing as me saying "oh people who just stand there and bob their head look SOOOOOO dumb". It's not karate, and unless you do it you probably can't understand it. It's just really fun, and you probably only hate dancers because you think their douchebags for accidently maybe running into you or hitting you. Don't stand so fucking close to the pit then! Don't be a pussy. As for dancing to bands like Hit the Lights and stuff, if you're at a pop punk show and they have parts to dance to, it's just as fun. Don't like it, don't go to the shows.
I don't know, just don't be a douchebag and judge. Chances are, actually I know for a fact, your snickering is the least of my worries at a show. Everything about music has different conflicting opinions.
Also-
THIS.

The only time I criticize people for their show ettiquate is if they're endangering people around them. However, if you're in a pit, it's rather obvious that the situation will get physical and the potential for harm is high. Also, I don't think Grand Rapids has any more scene kids than most cities in Michigan. If it's not an issue of harm, then who cares?

Why is it such a big deal? People enjoy their music in different ways! Here in Adelaide, at a hardcore show, there's a group of ten or so guys who ALWAYS open up the pit and dance. It's great to see people enjoying their music! Plus the Australian bands ALWAYS encourage it.
Occasionally I decide it's time to dance a tad - normally to a band I really love, and it's just another way of enjoying the experience more.
Last week we were at terror, and we decided to disco dance at the back of the crowd like lunatics. We were enjoying it, and fuck what everyone else might think.
Just because you don't understand the appeal doesn't mean it has none.
And really, don't go to a hardcore show if you can't stand the occasional bit of contact. It's fucking punk rock, not blues music we're listening to.
It's retarded. Just like moshing. If you've got some pent up anger to deal with go get into a fight somewhere else. I'm at this concert to watch the band/listen to the music, and I don't need to deal with some bunch of dumbasses running around and shoving everyone. Grow the fuck up.
You don't want to mosh...gtfo of the pit. That simple...
That said, you don't target those who are there and not "into it." You might get pushed into them on occasion, but that's about it. Punk and hardcore used to be about angst, aggression, now it's just another "musical styling" to many, and to that I say bullshit. If you're at a punk show, you'll know, because the band members themselves will be calling attention to the "no moshing" signs and calling you out...

See, I feel like it could go either way. Trevor should have given slightly better instructions. Then again, we don't need another rockstar claiming that "there's only one way to rock," so maybe the ambiguity is for the best.
