sometimes i like to listen to music when i fall asleep, sure. i didn't realize i was cheating or anything....i didn't even realize play counts on last.fm mattered that much at all. i'm sorry.

I only do this to my top artist, because they've got such a lead over #2, and I don't think it's pathetic in this sense... it encourages me to listen to other music! In fact, Jimmy Eat World used to be twice as played as #2, but it's gotten a little better. It's not that I force myself to listen to other stuff, it's just that I try to exclude JEW in playlists. I'll probably always love that band, so I might as well find other cool bands.

Oh and 60-75 a day isn't that absurd. Yes, it's a lot, but not unrealistic. 4 albums puts you around 50 plays already, then add in commuting time, in between classes, studying, relaxing, surfing, forum lurking, partying, cooking etc. Maybe for a working person 9-5 it would be more unrealistic, but for a student, not really. Plus sleeping music, if people do that.

I listen to my iPod in-between (and during) classes etc and I don't have near that amount of plays (this is probably also due to me always taking in new music, having almost completely balanced plays, but still). I think it's really just people leaving something on repeat all night, all day + scrobbling. It doesn't really bother me so much as baffle. Like, I don't understand the point of doing it considering I use Last.fm for keeping track of what I listen to, legitimately. I saw some random dude's profile the other day with 10,000 fun. plays and then looked at his recently plays and it was just the album on shuffle for like a week. Probably also has something to do with a lot of these kids only having around 50 artists that they actually listen to. Makes zero sense

Most of the artists I've been into lately are still on the 3rd or 4th but that's due to me only having 1 album or so by them. All my artists have extremely close playcounts because I always have a an intake of new music and I always give any album I buy/dl 8-10 listens. For example, Anchor & Braile has around 100 plays but I think that album is terrible. Point being - if I randomly listen to an album, chances are that artist will jump 5-10 spaces

This is crazy inaccurate, there's about a 2 year gap where I didn't have iPod scrobbling and I basically only listened to music on my iPod. Devin Townsend Band, Strapping Young Lad, Kaddisfly, Coheed and Cambria and Nevermore should be much higher.
