So that she can bleed constantly, gain 70 pounds (trust me, every girl I know has gotten one and 70 pounds was the least amount of weight gained), oh, and those make women crazier, and give them an amazing amount of acne (the big cysty kind).
Glad to know that grants for science are being spent trying to make women with extra estrogen look like dumb psychotic gold digging whores.
thank god we know this now, instead of figuring out how to cure and prevent the insignificant things like Alzheimer's

I was basically saying that there are better things that scientists could be using that money for instead of this useless shit. My main priority when it comes to the medical science world is that they find a cure for Alzheimer's, I'm sure millions of people would be happier about not seeing their parents deteriorate (to the point of forgetting how to talk, swallow, or go to the bathroom) than open a science magazine and see this useless bullshit.
by the way, I got on the pill when I was 15, and 7 months earlier my boyfriend told me he loved me, and a year and a half after starting the pill my taste in men hasnt totally changed, and my feelings for him has never wavered. Either way, I'm sure the effects are being over exaggerated in that article to make it sound more interesting than it is.

You're all idiots, particularly the guy bitching that his girlfriend is about to go on the pill.
If you have a mutually trusting, loving, dedicated relationship, yeah, you might have some stuff to work through. I'm certainly not contradicting that study. But it's not going to be some magical breakup pill that will suddenly make you dispensable. Especially if you have a great friendship at the basis of your relationship (which you always should).
My girlfriend went on the pill about halfway through the three years we've been together, and yeah, it changed her. She was more irritable for a few months, had mood swings, was (more) emotional (than usual). Did it make her want to break up with me? ...maybe sometimes. But that's my own fault for being a douchebag ;-) it wasn't the pill's fault.

It doesn't make a difference to you that a person that gets Alzheimer's has already lived at least like 60 years of their life? Whereas a person can get cancer at 20 and just be fucked? Or that cancer kills something like 7 times as many people as Alzheimer's?

It does make a difference, but I care more about Alzheimer's, I can give my grandma my bone marrow if we're a match, and she'll hopefully be fine, so it's not as big of a deal to me.

Ironically enough, considering our prior conversation, marijuana protects against Alzheimer's disease and saves dying neurons of patients suffering from it (http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=marijuana-hurts-some-helps-others).

Sounds to me like they are extrapolating a rat study looking at effects of marijuana on adult rat brains versus young rat brains to Alzheimer's in humans, which is, of course, impossible to do. You can't read articles in magazines and expect to find out about the actual research. Not to mention they make the effects sound new or more important than they are. They say: "THC boosts depleted levels of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which, when diminished, contributes to the weakened mental function in Alzheimer’s patients." Well that's nice, but 1. that effect will be less effective than the drugs available for Alzheimer's that do this (galantamine, donepezil, rivastigmine, tacrine) and 2. how important that is can be debated since those drugs only help a proportion of patients and even those who are helped continue to decline. There are other problems with this article, but you get the idea.
Sounds to me like they are extrapolating a rat study looking at effects of marijuana on adult rat brains versus young rat brains to Alzheimer's in humans, which is, of course, impossible to do.
Actually no, it's not. Comparing the effect of neuron function from drugs in other mammalians to humans is one of the best techniques (and probably one of the most widely used) neuroscience has to offer. Neuron function is virtually identical across species because it evolved so long ago and is fundamental to all brain processes. And if I recall correctly, this specific study was designed to look at the effects of THC on developing rat brains versus mature rat brains, which can then be extrapolated with sizable confidence to the developing human brain. It was that article, not Campbell's study, that linked her findings to previous research on THC and Alzheimer's.
You can't read articles in magazines and expect to find out about the actual research. Not to mention they make the effects sound new or more important than they are.
I've read the actual peer-reviewed journal article, in addition to some previous ones done on humans in relation to Alzheimer's. I didn't link to them specifically because you'd need a subscription to the journal or database they're in to read them. And studies on this topic are new--as in, like, the past 3-4 years new. I, for one, do think it's important, too.

And you know this how? Do you have any idea how much money is provided by pharmaceutical companies for researching the drugs they develop versus studies of this kind? Do you know that drug studies funded by pharmaceutical companies and government entities have been shown to rate the effectiveness of new, marketable drugs as up to 60-70% more effective than older drugs or non-patentable drugs when compared to other, independently funded research?
2. how important that is can be debated since those drugs only help a proportion of patients and even those who are helped continue to decline.
Indeed, but it's always beneficial to increase our knowledge about drugs and the brain.

I know how the research is done, but extrapolating adult rat brain results to adult human with Alzheimer's is not a linkage that works. Animal studies are very important and a lot of knowledge comes from them, but they are still a stepping stone.
And you know this how? Do you have any idea how much money is provided by pharmaceutical companies for researching the drugs they develop versus studies of this kind? I'm aware of how drug companies influence data and so forth, that's not really the point. I know how THC effects neurons and how it works, and I know how those drugs work. Those drugs are specifically targeted to the Ach system (they act as AchE inhibitors).
The point is, I find it quite unlikely that smoking marijuana will actually impact the course of Alzheimer's. It may well treat some symptoms, but as for the progression, I find it hard to believe, and I have yet to see any evidence to support this. Alzheimer's effects everyone if they live long enough, and as of now we just don't know the etiology behind it. Without knowing the etiology, we're probably not going to be able to significantly stop the progression or prevent it. We do know some of the pathophysiology behind it, and some of this has led to somewhat helpful treatments (donepezil, etc. stemming from the knowledge that there is a decrease in cholinergic neurons early in Alzheimer's). There will be benefits from BDNF, but there will be better research and better ways of exploiting that than smoking marijuana (I'm sure you'll agree).

Bear in mind that there are things about your body and mind that you cannot control. Attraction and love, when you get down to the science of it, are simply hormones and chemicals produced in the glands of the brain and body that produce pleasurable emotions. Messing with how they work is likely to cause changes in behaviour, regardless of whether you notice it or not.

I dunno, I would like to see the research they're basing it on. Not saying it's impossible but birth control pills aren't really a high dose of estrogen and other hormones. But yeah, I do see in the article is does note that bc pills trick your body into thinking it is pregnant which does change your hormones quite a bit. I can agree with you on it possibly causing unnoticeable things to happen since it has to do with things you're not conciously thinking about.
I personally have taken birth control pills for so many years that I can't really say that I know if my taste in men changed. I kinda wanna stop taking them and see if I like, stop liking my boyfriend as much over time. Seems unlikely, but interesting.
