I do not understand why people simply detest the word cunt.
To me it's just a word but some people get really angry and/or offended when they hear the word spoken.
What are your thoughts on the word cunt? Could someone provide an actually reason why it's so offensive?
edit:
I know people find it offense, I'm looking for reasons why, not simply if you think it's bad or not.

i think american society would like to see nipples, the fcc just speaks for everyone and says that we don't :( and as far as cunt is concerned, i don't see how it's any worse than calling someone a dick...

Because cunt means vagina. When you use it negatively towards someone it's like... putting down vaginas. Like they're a bad thing.

"If you’re turning part of a woman’s body into a slur to insult someone, the implication is necessarily that cunts are bad, nasty, less than, in some way something that a person wouldn’t want to be or be associated with. That’s how insults work. When cunt is used as a slur, it is dependent on construing a woman’s body part negatively—and it thusly misogynistic, because it inexorably insults women in the process."

I don't have a problem with it, but it may be because I used to live in Ireland and it was no more offensive than fuck. I don't know why it's so terrible here, either. It may be because people don't use it nearly as freely as any other swear, but then again, this could be because it's considered very offensive here. It's recursive.

It's the way that it sounds. It's very... strong? I don't think that's the right way to put it. It used to bother me a lot, but I've become more immune to it the more I hear it. I can't decide if "twat" is worse or not, though.

The real question is, for anyone who thinks calling someone a cunt is terrible, have you ever called something or someone gay? Have you ever called someone a f@ggot? Have you used those words to say something is " bad, nasty, or in some way something that a person wouldn’t want to be or be associated with"?
If your answer is yes, then stfu. You're a hypocrite.

I've used it twice in my entire life, once when I dropped a bookcase on my foot and once when I was watching the TV and it accidentally slipped out because I was remembering something my pop said once in relation to what was said on the TV. It was very very awkward because my entire family was in the room.
Well, that's very good of you then. And yeah that sounds awkward. Same kind of situation happened to me when I was about 5. I called someone a bastard. Didn't know any better. Of course, it's not as harsh of a word at all, but still..
I don't call people gay or f-----s. So what does that make me?
Well, it makes you not a hypocrite and a good person, in that sense. And I respect people who don't call other people those things.
I just want to say, I wasn't accusing anyone of being one. All I said was if your answer to that question is yes, than you are definitely a hypocrite. Because it's the same principle. I know people who say they hate the word cunt, and give the reasoning that it's disrespectful, but they will call someone a f@g. It infuriates me.

I told you why on my first post in this thread. Why would you dismiss someone as a cunt instead of actually criticizing them anyway?
EDIT: http://finallyfeminism101.wordpress.com/2008/05/16/feminism-friday-on-bitch-and-other-misogynist-language/
Then wouldn't that make calling someone a "dick" just as worse?

I'd rather be called that than a "dumb bitch." That sets me off more than anything. If you do call me a cunt, though, it had better be with damn good reason.
agreed.
When I'm drunk, I usually corner some poor unsuspecting male and explain to them why cunt is my favorite word. Those poor guys probably think I'm insane.
hahahaha, this sounds like something my roommate would do.
i see nothing wrong with saying the word, but if a guys actually calls a girl a cunt in context, then i hate the word. but other than that, nothing against it, me and my roommate use it on a daily basis.
i guess this compares to fotze! i can't remember ever calling someone a cunt. except for dirty talk xD

If someone was talking dirty to me and called me a cunt, the mood would be killed instantly.

Personally, I don't like the word 'receipt.' I always get the feeling that the 'p' is hiding something and it puts me on edge. X-)

No words bother me. They are just words and I use them all
Exactly.
Why would someone be offended by something that someone else says? I don't just go around calling others "bad words", but I do say them when speaking with friends in normal conversation.

Same here. When you let other people bother you you're stupid. Just don't worry about stupid shit so much

I don't think anyone needs to be called a dick. It's better to just criticize them specifically and not take the easy way to flame them.

I dont understand why people don't like cunt but they like pussy, or vagina... its the same damn thing. Probably because like Dick it is mostly use as calling someone a name, that's why people find it offensive, because they are being called a cunt.

The fact that anybody can find offense in a word is completely beyond me. Regardless of whether it's derogatory or racist or all of the above, if you're letting a word bring you down then you need to seriously rethink your life.
