Disaster March - Dire Days EP

Disaster March hail from Milwaukee, a city who's biggest musical claim to fame would probably be the Violent Femmes and the BoDeans. That's not to say that these bands aren't a joy to listen to, and that trend continues with Disaster March's newest release, the Dire Days EP, a six-song rock n' roll adventure laden with powerful guitars, undeniably fantastic vocals and one of the tightest rhythm sections you'll hear in a long time.
The brief, "Intro, " song sets up an unusual vibe-one might think this will just end up being yet another piano-based pop record, yet only a minute later it blasts into the Foo Fighters-esque, "It's What You Meant To Say, " a high-energy number complete with cleverly crafted gang vocals, tight drum fills, a wicked guitar solo and foreboding lines like, "With friends like you I would rather be dead. " Songs like the followng track, "Save Me Jaime, " is just pure pop at it's finest, while, "These Blue Eyes, " turns up the rock once again, with drummer Joe Boivin attacking the drumkit like it owes him money and frontman Mark Speer's harmonies with sister Cassie Speer bring the chorus to amazing heights, all before breaking down into a low-key bridge that again shows how the rhythm section drives this record. The EP then bring it back down again for its
final two songs-"Slow Motion, " recalls Blue Album-era Weezer, while the closer, "So Say We All, " could easily find its way onto Say Anything's next release-one can only imagine how this piano-driven number would sound with a full band.
Producer Kristian Riley has manned the board on a number of releases (Truth In Fiction, Maritime, Paris Texas), and with Disaster March's Dire Days EP he's nailed it once more. It's refreshing to hear a solid rock record again, a band that owes more to 90's alternative rock than anything else, a band that's crafted a fine release, a band that seems to be right on the cusp of bona fide stardom.
