I'm a big fan of categories:
"one room school house" old school:
-frank sinatra (more for his attitude of life...but old blues eyes a beautiful voice)
-ella fitzgerald
-louie armstrong
classics but goodies.
"I walked a mile in the snow to get to school" old school:
-beach boys
-the beatles b/c I said so!
- the temptations
-the supremes
-frankie lymen
-and pretty much any poppy 50s song that was ridiculously corny
"I was probably stoned in school" old school:
-the rolling stones
-the doobie brothers
-the allman brothers
-the beatles? haha
-pink floyd
-led zepplin
-the mama's and the papa's
-eddie rabbit.
alright I'm gonna stop

the beach boys. once you get past the fact that your parents love them and that their early material had super cheez lyrics, oh and that they looked like total clean cut nerds and live were even nerdier, you realize just what an amazing songwriter brian wilson was at the time and even now. I mean people go ape shit over harmonized vocals in pop punk even today. but 40 years before blink 182 made their classic outro to feeling this, the beach boys were doing 'god only knows' hitting notes about 10 times harder to hit and wilson was creating swirling vocals that no pop punk band or any band really can even attempt today. go listen to 'dont worry baby' 'god only knows' 'wouldnt it be nice' and 'good vibrations' and tell me this shit doesnt rule. just steer clear of 'be true to your school'. ugh

nope johnny cash is a country artist. you're wrong. it's OK to like country. i like country music. i like johnny cash. but he played country music, he wrote country music. he had a lot of influence on rock & roll. doesn't change the fact that he PLAYED COUNTRY MUSIC.
Well since you are the one bitching about people picking a country artist as their favorite Oldies band/artist, and bitching about how old something has to be, name one band/artist who play Oldies?
To me, Oldies is anything older than I can remember. You gotta think, if you say Elvis is "oldies", for example, people didn't call it Oldies back then. Oldies isn't a style of music, it's something that has just been out a long time.
To me, the Smiths and The Police can be considered old, because I was only a year or so old when they were making records.
Bottom line, who fucking cares, it's just a discussion question, get over it.

I'd have to say Simon & Garfunkle are my all-time oldie faves. Anyone who has been young once is able to relate to their lyrics and song.

Is Johnny Cash in the Country Music Hall of Fame? Yes. Did he play numerous shows at the Grand Ole Opry? Yes. Is he a country music artist? Yes. Does that mean he wasn't also a rock and roll artist? No.
When he first started out he mainly played gospel, but he was a huge part of the rockabilly scene of the late 50's (along with Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, etc.). I never said he wasn't country, I said you can't solely place him in the country category. He's country, he's gospel, he's rock, he's much more.
He's The Man In Black and you're just a holier-than-thou college punk with an attitude. Go learn about your roots and listen to something other than Fall Out Boy or The Beach Boys once in a while.
