I've been meaning to get into Modest Mouse for a while but I don't know where to start. I listened to Good News for... back when it came out, but I can't remember what I thought of it. What album would you recommend I start with?

I love Modest Mouse, but I can see why some people have trouble getting into them. Good News is probably their most "accessible" album, so I went with that. They are all really good, but it might take a few listens to appreciate it or get into it.

pretty much in the same position as you. i tried listening to the moon and antarctica once through, though, and i remember liking it somewhat. can't exactly vote in the poll, though.

I went with Moon & Antarctica because I think it's their second best album, but it's also fairly accessible.

Good poll. I would have to say that my favorite is "We Were Dead.." It has some of my favorite songs of all time on there.
Oh, and Spitting Venom is epic as hell.

I'd say The Moon & Antarctica. I couldn't get into them either based on just hearing their singles, but this album got me hooked. I can't go more than a few days without listening to "Life Like Weeds."

i liked this order cuz i feel like i went in a full circle kind of hour. mad props to longdistancedrunk for helping me get into this band. if it weren't for him, and this (hot) chick who worked at FYE, i would be missing out on one of the best bands of the last 20 years.

I don't think it's any more accessible than Moon and Antarctica  but maybe that's just me. Both great albums.

As others have said, Good News is probably the best starting point.
Moon and Antarctica is the next step. But the further back you go into the MM catalog the more polarizing it becomes. People either love it or don't get into it all at. Lonesome is the best of their "old" albums IMO. Check out Trailer Trash, Truckers Atlas and Heart Cooks Brain.
The biggest problem I have with old MM is the production. Some of it is pretty terribly recorded/produced. Mabye that's what they were going for, but its not to my taste at all.

Sounds logical.
I vote Moon & Antarctica, that cd is fantastic and kind of is the middle ground between their old stuff and new stuff.

phenomenal performance of one of my favorite MM songs. i went a long time where i really preferred lonesome crowded and moon and antarctica. but lately the last two full lengths along with the new ep have regained their spots as my favorite work they've done. not that their catalogue isn't incredible as a whole.

Certainly is. They have gone downhill. First two were gems. They have dropped off significantly

Isaac on drugs > Isaac sober. We Were Dead is mediocre. At best. When that man was doing drugs he wrote fantastic records which is really odd. Sobered up he writes boring ones. Not saying I want him back on them but still

Really? I feel like he didn't come into his own with songwriting really until The Moon and Antarctica. That's where he found his niche. And I don't see how anyone can call Good News boring.
I do believe Cowboy Dan is one of their greatest songs though.

Okay then their first three. Cause The Moon & Antarctica is amazing. But Good News has nothing special to me. Lost all its quirkiness

Moon and Antarctica is personally my favorite album from MM. Any of the other LPs would be a good bet to build off of album. Good News was pretty mainstream and the easiest to get into in my opinion, but M&A was what got me very into this band. I've been through so many mind trips listening to that album. By the way, Stars are Projectors=mindfuck

I started with We were dead, followed by M&A, Good news, Lonesome, Building nothing, then Long Drive
Actually, the first song I ever heard by them was King Rat

For a beginner? Good News... For the pinnacle? Moon and Antarctica. My list: M&A, LCW, Good News, We Were Dead, Buiding Nothing, Long Drive, Sad Sappy Sucker, Fruit that ate itself

I'm glad I helped you get into them. Have you listened to their entire discography as well as Ugly Casanova? imo the only weak thing they have released is The Fruit That Ate Itself EP and even that is still pretty damn good.
What are your thoughts on Building Nothing? Literally no stores in Aus have it in stock and I'm gonna have to get it from overseas. I've heard it's really up there with their best work (I have all their other full lengths)

Good News is the most easily accessible (especially if you like more melodic stuff), but Lonesome Crowded West is one of the best albums ever.

Well Modest Mouse is my favorite band and I love pretty much everything they've done so it's extremely hard for me to have a definitive favorite but for like the past year or so Building Nothing has been my favorite MM album. Definitely on par with their regular full length and considering it's a b-sides/singles compilation it's amazing how well the songs flow together. Plus it has Sleepwalking, my favorite MM song
I can PM you a link to see if you like it before buying it. Shit is unbelievably dope but really what else can you expect from Issac Brock?
Thanks, but it's cool, like I said I'm getting it as soon as it comes up on the net. I'm sure I'll love it, especially considering Moon and Antarctica is my fav of theirs.

lonesome crowded west is a must buy. thats the next one i went with after i got good news. moon and antarctica is incredible too, but really experimental. i'm not sure how experimental you are (with music), but if you like that stuff, this album is great.
