Sherwood - QU
Record Label: Myspace Records
Release Date: Oct. 13, 2009
Few California bands have been as skilled at recreating the sun-drenched melodies of The Beach Boys better than San Luis Obispo's Sherwood. While their songs take on hints of pop-punk at times, the group's core is the melodic zest of guitarist Dan Koch and the sweetly harmonic vocals of frontman Nate Henry. Though the tandem are not the band's only assets (keys player Mikey Leibovich is a dynamic force, both live and in studio; and drummer Joe Greenetz is a skilled percussionist) their contributions anchor the band, allowing the quintet to craft another dazzling disc, that is most definitely their finest work to date. Whereas on prior efforts the band let Koch tackle all the songwriting, QU features collaborative help from vocalist Henry, keys player Leibovich and a few friends.
Opening with the 40-second acapella treat "Shelter," QU begins with a gentle grace that is both warm and inviting. "Maybe This Time" builds on the cheery vibe of the opener but goes even further. A surefire arena-ready anthem this is a tune with a soaring chorus, driving guitars and snappy percussion. An inspired acoustic guitar begins the unabashed pop-rock smash "Hit the Bottom," which is an undeniable must-listen and another aurally pleasing nugget from a band that may arguably be California's best pop songwriters. The blatant placement of the acoustic guitar is a point worth noting in listening to the rest of the effort. Whereas previous Sherwood discs featured copious amounts of electric guitars, QU features large doses of acoustic guitar, piano and layers of genial percussion.
An autumnal album with somber themes it is the exact record Sherwood needed to make. Four straight albums of saccharine pop goodness is pleasant and infectious, but a shift needed to be made and thankfully Sherwood did so. Though the album represents a sea change of sorts for the quintet, it does not represent a departure from their trademark pop hooks. As evidence of this, fourth track "Make It Through" is the first half's second surefire standout and features a magnetic, midtempo movement that is slightly peppy, sincere and incredibly warmhearted. "You Are" ends what is essentially the disc's first half and it's another inspired and thought-provoking piece. Buoyant and bubbly it is arguably another radio-ready chorus from a band that seems to have the formula for pop simplicity down pat.
"Ground Beneath My Feet" features a set of lines that pretty much sums up the entire album, "'I've got a funny feeling that it's my day to leave, shoulders down, the sweat drips across my cheek, as I turn I can taste the salt in the shallow sea." Though its a rehash, the song is tangible proof that lyricist Dan Koch is a first-rate wordsmith whose simple, unadorned poetry is both understated, underrated and utterly beautiful. "Around You" is another meander through midtempo territory with the guitar and piano providing a calm and cerebral tone to the disc's second half. The band picks up the pace on "What Are You Waiting For?," a cheery pop ditty thats spunky, and vigorous. Ninth track "Not Gonna Love," which appeared on a 2009 EP of the same name is a warm piano-based cut with airy vocals that is captivating and coruscate.
"Worn" is easily Sherwood's most mature recording to date. A simple, acoustic duet between Henry and singer/songwriter Molly Jenson, it's a bittersweet, barroom ballad about the suckerpunches of a failed romance, highlighted by the lines “You always come home to those empty rooms and wonder what’s left to lose, folding sheets ‘cause you can never stop.” Penultimate track "Free" is a is another full-throttle, hip-shaking anthem about clarity and is really the album's only dud. That it comes ten songs in is refreshing and not all that disappointing. Truth be told, for as pedestrian as it might be, it still beats the hell out of a lot of songs passing for pop these days.
And as the album nears finish it is at this point that the crystalline production of Brad Wood is worth applauding. The veteran producer whose had a hand in aiding the careers of Pete Yorn, Liz Phair and Smashing Pumpkins to name a few, has once again inserted his Midas touch on a band that most clearly benefitted from his instruction. Perhaps the best example of this is the stirring album closer "No Better," a sincere and contemplative look at divorce that's as rich and probing as anything released this year. Stark, candid and empathetic, "No Better," cuts to the bone and stirs the soul. Aside from "Lake Tahoe," has Sherwood ever been this poignant?
The album's only error, aside from "Free," is that three of the songs on the disc also appeared on the aforementioned Not Gonna Love EP. Granted those three songs are irresistible, but one can make the argument that the group could have easily penned three more equally irresistible pop charmers. All minor complaints aside, this disc is a dynamo. From start to finish, QU is a surefire winner, backed by sterling arrangements, Henry's finest vocal work to date and easily the most confident and polished work of their career. Equal parts cohesive, stimulating and musically stunning, QU is the sound of a band at their apex and fully realizing their potential. If this doesn't turn some heads, the music industry is truly dead inside.

88%, wow. I am excited for this. I love Sing, but Keep Going. A Different Light was pretty fun, but did not get many spins after a month or so.

Woah, long review here...
I find this album strange. It sounds so different from ADL - to the point where it drifts away from the modern norms of pop-punk. This is not necessarily a bad thing though.

It may be hyperbolic. But I've given this album a month and it hasn't died on me. So any exaggerated statements are just a reflection of the fact that it can't get old.

Too many references to the EP, but good review and very good album.
It was referenced three times, as a reminder that the band didn't really write 12 new songs. That very point, as referenced in the penultimate paragraph is one of the album's few downsides. Being that the review is so praiseworthy, I had to emit a negative when possible.

An 88 is a B plus. How is this not a B plus record? As for the overrated claim, we can agree to disagree. I think if anything they are extremely underrated.

Does anyone else think it's terrible fucking timing to release this record? When I think of summer music, this is honestly one of my favorite bands to listen to while driving with the windows down. 40 degree weather in Chicago doesn't mix as well.
Edit: still haven't listened to it, but I'm about to - just read in the review that it's an "autumnal" album, so perhaps what I said will be wrong...

I owe you a drink.
I've loved Sherwood since way back when I first heard "Please Wait Up for Me."
I just have to say that this album was a huge disappointment for me. Perhaps the most disappointing album of the year. Since I first listened about three weeks ago, I've given it several more chances but it has done nothing for me. I'm not one of those people who expect the band to keep remaking the same album repeatedly, but I feel this was a step in the wrong direction.
To me, the melodies feel rather generic and boring, the songs lack energy (which wouldn't be so bad if the melodies were stronger), and the constant gang vocals on some tracks is distracting. It seems like most of these songs would be best enjoyed by a mother in her late 30's to 40's. They definitely have that kind of watered down radio appeal. Honestly, I've heard catchier Sugar Ray songs than some of the stuff on this album. It's not that Sherwood were ever "edgy," I just think they have written better melodies in the past.
After hearing "Snowing in Seattle," I was really excited about a new album. But that one song certainly wasn't indicative of what was to come. I'd probably give the album about a 75%.
I owe you a drink.
With all the midterm studying I'm going through right now, I could use one. ;-)

But was the 'Not gonna love' EP really released in 2007? It's the year 'A different light' came out...
I thought it was only a promo EP sold this year at shows and on iTunes before the album. To me, it's not a "proper" EP.

Weird, this album seems to be very polarizing. My pre-order should get in tomorrow but I listened to it last night when it went up on MySpace, and love it.
I think the EP was actually a preview sampler type thing...they had been saying they were writing/recording a full-length, and then the EP was sold at shows without any press or hype--I don't think there was a formal release. Pretty sure all the songs on QU were written and recorded at the same time as each other, and they just happened to put those three on the EP.

I thought it'd been established a long time ago that the AP scale is not akin to a report card. 50% is supposed to be completely average on a pure percentile scale, not 75% (a solid C). I have no quibble with your score for this album, but it helps when people are consistent about what the numerics really mean.

I suppose you're onto something. I'll admit naivete on my part for not knowing what the scale means. I was under the assumption, the scale varied by reviewer. For those that know me, they know I generally rate things in the 80s and dont go much lower than 50. Those albums that are truly something special get 90s. This disc is not quite that strong, but not far away, either. That's just my ten cents.

exactly, you're absolutely right. it was basically just a sneak peek of the album. so yeah, they wrote 12 new songs.

A lot of people score that way, I think. The school system has drilled report cart percentiles into all our heads, so it's what people usually assume -- but I feel like it wastes half of a scale. If we almost never use anything below 50%, why even have it there? Why not just score out of 50 points instead of 100?
I much prefer when an average score is pegged at 50, and then you can see where true deviation from the norm occurs by swinging to either side. Giving a score a 4 doesn't mean it fails, but rather it's slightly below average. It makes the scale less immediately accessible, but also helps truly differentiate albums rather than having a huge glut of musical output in the 70-80% range because half the scale's numbers never get used.
It is strange that this is such a divisive album in regard to fan reaction. I wonder why?
To me, I think it is disappointing because I have heard so many other bands that have a similar sound with better results. I understand that this album is more Autumnal, but Sherwood themselves made better, mellower tracks on previous albums ("The Simple Life," "Lake Tahoe," "This Airplane is a Ribbon," etc.).
The melodies just seem really weak, and when that happens to a band that already writes very simple songs, that is really about the most important part.

To me, writing style is not as important as substance. While I disagree with your opinion of the album, I think you did a good job of presenting a review that was clear and actually explained why you think the album deserves a high score. This was a good review.
By the way, I like your avatar. I like to cover completely random songs using Dylan's vocal style he used for songs like "I Want You." It gets some great comedic results.
I really liked their old pop-style displayed in their previous 2 releases. I can't really get into this style/sound.
Kinda disappointing for me, because I was hoping I'd like this release, but I don't really yet. :\

Really now? Maybe I'm deluded, but I recall seeing multiple scores in the 60's being defended on the staff level as meaning "slightly above-average" to ward off slavering, indignant fanboys and fangirls. The Not Gonna Love EP was just a sample of three songs that were going to be appearing on Qu. When I saw them in July, they said that since the album was taking awhile to be released, they put some songs on an EP that could be purchased so it would hold people over until the actual record came out. You can't dock them for that.
When I first listened to the EP, I wasn't very impressed. The songs lacked energy. However, seeing as how it'll only be $2.99 on amazon tomorrow, I'll pick it up and give it a proper chance.

never have gotten into sherwood, is this the album to get into? I'm really tempted to purchase tomorrow for only 2.99.
I would say start with Sing, But Keep Going.

Why?
Some of the best guitar-pop of all time lacks conventionally sharp hooks.
I guess. But if songs aren't memorable then there isn't anything to fall back on. It's not that it has to be catchy, there just has to be SOMETHING to latch onto, which their last release didn't have (save for a chorus here and there).
For example, I find that Fountains Of Wayne do this genre incredibly well. Not only do they not shy away from hooks they also are great storytellers.

I think I'm in the minority but I like A Different Light much better than this album. Probably because this wasn't really what I was hoping to hear from them. Maybe it will grow on me though.

I completely agree. I think Sherwood's best album is "Sing, But Keep Going." They found the perfect balance between energetic pop tracks and slower, more melodic songs. Songs like "The Town That You Live In" and "You're Like A Ghost" are amazing tracks for any season. "A Different Light" drifted a little too far to the pop side and consequently didn't have as much staying power. "QU" is just boring. Perhaps it will grow on me, but I'm really just not feeling it at all so far.
I think most people tend to relate the percentage to a 5-star system. 50% = 2.5 stars. There's not much point of having a 0-100 scale if only 50-100 are ever used on it ;-)

after what they said they were trying to do with the album im sure an 88% is very appropriate, assuming they capitalized which it sounds like they did. this is a good month for music, people

An 88 is a B plus. How is this not a B plus record? As for the overrated claim, we can agree to disagree. I think if anything they are extremely underrated.
This isn't in reference to the quality of this album, but I think it's understood that an 88% on AP is a higher mark than a B+ in school. This site grades much harsher than any teacher I've ever had.

Far better than A Different Light.
i will have to check it out then. a different light was a really fun pop album, that just didn't get enough love because everyone was hyping the band before the release as the next big thing or whatever and people therefore had unrealistic expectations

That's a pretty general question, but my favorite bands include Brand New, The Starting Line, Say Anything, The Fall of Troy, Northstar, Broken Social Scene, Relient K, and Bright Eyes. A person can dislike boring, uninspired pop without being a FTSK, ATL, Mayday-obsessed scene kid. Although I will say that ATL, and maybe even FTSK, make better music than Sherwood.
Maybe even FTSK? Seriously? You might want to rethink that statement.

Greg,
Your review was very well written, and I fully agree with the score. For everyone moaning about the score, get over it- everyone has different taste. Personally, I think Brand New is the most overrated band on this site- but that is my OPINION, and everyone is entitled to their own opinion. This band truly deserves more success than they have been getting.

Still gonna give this one time to grow on me. As of now, it's middle of the road for me. Still, with all that said, another stellar review Greg. Don't get all the hostility here; Sherwood is a talented pop band who has the right idea going and could set off enough sparks to set the industry ablaze.

Thats pretty funny, my brothers both listen to We Shot the Moon and Sherwood religiously, I just can't get into any of them. I thought A Different Light had maybe 3 good songs on it though. But ya this is pretty much meh, not saying their a bad band just saying I can't get into them for some reason, and I usually listen to the same stuff as Mr. Robson.

There seems to be a lot of people on the fence about this release...but this has always been a band that writes good music and its been a pleasure to watch them evolve the way they have over the years from their first EP to their latest endeavors.
I just hope this record hits..I'd be extremely sad if this band gave up after so much progression and hard work.

I heard a few songs, decided to buy the album for $2.99 and am not disappointed in one bit. Tried to get into them back in like 2004 when they toured with a local band (Offset for those that are in the OC/SD area) but just couldnt. I really like the album. Very solid review Greg.

Pretty good review. This is their best album instrumentation-wise. Not just another pop rock album with an electric lead and rhythm. The first half of the album is probably one of my favorite first halves of any album.
"Maybe This Time" pulsates with only the bass when you expect the album to start off with Sherwood's signature electric guitar riffs.
"Hit The Bottom" is vintage California pop.
"You Are" is the radio single.
The synths on "Free" remind me of The Arcade Fire.
The only quibble I have with this album is the piano lead on Track 7 "Around You." It's too bland. But the acoustic guitar partially makes up for it.

Hit The Bottom and Make It Through are some of the best pop songs I have heard in awhile. I really really like this CD. I think it blows A Different Light out of the water. I love Sherwood and have for years now.
i gotta say - i like this. a lot. i think free is the worst song on the album - but still really good. i really enjoy the rhythm section.
i don't think they are underrated at all. i think for a band on MYSPACE RECORDS - they should be so much bigger and well-known then they are. yeah maybe you or i don't use myspace - but they are always sending out mass emails to everyone on there. those tween girls would eat this up.
the only DOWNSIDE to this band - is the fact that this is their second release to my knowledge that had songs that were released on a separate EP ("The Middle of the Night" "I'm Asking Her to Stay" etc. from the previous record and others)

For those who say Sherwood's overrated, you're out of your mind. For their genre, they do it better than pretty much anybody. As for A Different Light, I don't know why it is constantly seen on this site as a substandard album, it might be my favorite album of all time. It's pop, it's allowed to have some bells and whistles, lol. But with that said, QU's just about as great. Very different, but great nonetheless.

I was not terribly impressed with this album. I personally like A Different Light better.
Well...after listening to this album five or so times through, I have mixed feelings. Comparing it to other albums released recently in the genre, I can understand giving it a good review. But an 88? I don't know. I thought that there were a few filler tracks on it. "Free" is probably the best-written composition I've seen put out by Sherwood. Love the ending and the melody. But tracks like "You Are" and "Maybe This Time" I couldn't quite get into, but I'm sure the airwaves will feed on those.
