In My Life (Beatles cover!!!)
I don't think there's anybody that constantly surprises me with every performance like Jason Mraz does. I've seen him 7 times prior to these two shows, and no two renditions of the same song are every exactly the same and that is what I love about him! While you could look up the setlist of his tour beforehand, he constantly changes it up for each show. After seeing him live for the first time 4 years ago, I could never go back to listening to his studio albums again. This weekend was no exception. I'm still in awe of his voice, especially when he inserted a little opera ala "Mr. Curiosity" into "Coyotes" (see this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJa8-C-wzng). The two new songs he played were amazing! "Anything You Want" goes along with the reggae sound that Jason went for in "I'm Yours" while "What Would Love Do?" was a typical Mraz song w/ only an acoustic guitar that Jason sang beautifully with the Voices of Praise (see video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PmDraL9uQF8).
I also went to the Grooveline Horns (Jason's band) after show at the Roxy following the Hollywood Bowl concert. While neither the ticket nor the itinerary listed that Jason would be there, he surprised everyone by attending and singing along and dancing with everyone in the crowd! No barricade, no assigned seating, just the band, Jason, his friends and fans singing a few covers. It's no secret the Jason smokes weed so it was very entertaining to see him perform "Mary Jane."

The highlight of both nights and the biggest surprise was the "In My Life" cover that he played at the end. I've never heard him cover it, but it is absolutely beautiful. And since it was the last night of the Cafe Gratitude Tour and his last US tour for a long while (he's going to take time off and record a new album), it was definitely bittersweet and you could here the sincerity in his voice. I suggest that when Jason does tour again that if you're a fan of any of his music to go see him live!!! It will change your life! Haha maybe not, but it sure changed mine.
