I'm beginning to think about college which is still two years away, but I'm 99.9% sure I want to major in Music Industry.
I've been looking online at a few different schools, but the problem is cost
since I'm not at the point where I need to make a decision, I'm not completely sure how much my parents would offer to pay
I live in Kansas and would prefer an out of state school (would be costly), which most of the schools I've found that offer majors in music industry seem to be outside of Kansas
Does anybody know of any schools that offer a Music Industry major?

and any info/advice on scholarships would be helpful too :)
thanks

I know oneonta has music industry as a major i was actually looking into transferring there myself next year
NYU has a great Music program for business and management to recording, they have there own studio which is awesome, Im currently a studio recording major and my school doesnt have its own studio we go off campus to Vudu studios
Boston has an awesome! music scene theres Berkley and Boston University have great programs
idk where you are from but on long island there is five towns college and its all about music and stuff its not that expensive but i hear alot of people dont care for it but if you are looking to save money its a good place to go

idk if you are a songwriter or not but ASCAP or BMI are always having songwriter contests for young writers and offer scholarship money
and go to your guidance counselor when its time there are sooo many scholarships out there to take advantage of

SUNY Potsdam has the crane school of music and a good business program. Currently im thinking about switching to it. Also it is cheap compared to private colleges.

Columbia College Chicago has a good music business program. Its the Arts Entertainment Media Management department if you go to colum.edu (http://www.colum.edu) you can get some info. I'm a Junior in college right now and I play in a touring band and I go here for Music Business with a concentration in Talent Management/Touring and Live Entertainment. It's a little on the expensive side, but if you can round up some scholarships it makes it more managable and if you can get on the honor roll (which is not hard at all) in your first semester, you can get a huge discount on your tuition from the school. Also, not living on campus helps, since this college is in downtown Chicago, the dorms are huge apartment complexes that cost about 10 grand a year to live in. I live in an apartment off campus with some friends and I save a lot of money.

It's also a good idea, even though it sometimes sucks, is to stay around home for a semester or two and knock out a lot of gen eds so that you are only paying for the classes (at whichever music business college you choose) that you can only get at that college, like all your music business classes. That's what I did and it definitely is nice to pay a fraction of the cost per credit hour for the same thing.

Also fastweb.com (http://www.fastweb.com) is a good place to look for scholarships.

I'm currently pursuing a minor in music industry through the Thornton School of Music at USC

Pros:
Great classes and very well connected faculty
Located in Los Angeles...arguably the best cities besides NY or possibly Nashville to pursue a career in the industry
TONS of connections, and compared to the rest of SC the people I've met through the music industry program are a lot cooler/less pretentious than everyone else at the school

Cons:
Tuition at USC is expensive, though they tend to be very generous with financial aid if you are deserving and in need.
General social atmosphere here leaves something to be desired, but as long as you're able to meet people you share common interests with early on you'll be fine.

I attended the University of Georiga which is in Athens, GA. It's a huge music town with a rich history. Bands such as REM, The B- 52's, Neutral Milk Hotel, Of Montreal and Drive By Truckers all originally came from there. The school offers a Music Business program. When I was there in 2007 you could only minor in it but you might be able to major in it now.

Good luck.

Columbia College Chicago
Exactly what I was gonna say.. I attend school there now. I am in Marketing though so I cannot tell you much about anything youd be interested in. I love art and I love music, but suck at both so hopefully I can market some shit I like. But anyway. Its suppose to be a fucking AMAZING arts school for film, photography, and music. If I was talented in music there is no doubt in hell there were alotta classes Id be interested in. This school has sucha good rep, I met people who came striaght from Turkey to go here for film. It was recommended by their teachers OUT THERE..
Also, anytime I say I attend Columbia I get asked "What do you play?" which shows how big of a rep they have in the area of music.

I go to Belmont University and I'm in the Mike Curb College of Entertainment & Music Business. It's really expensive, but it's something you should look into.

FSU has a commercial music program which is really good, you can only do it if you get into the music school though, and it's quite hard.

My advice is to get a general business or marketing degree. Learn the industry on your own...book tours, manage a local band, intern.
