yeah homeland security that'll work
the more we go after other countries, the more vunrable we become, to homeland security could become a major issue in the future, presently, i think we have bigger fish to fry, like or fucked up economy

I think since 9/11 security has been improved, but not to the extent the media and the bush administration would have you belive. Since 9/11 we have been living in an atmosphere of fear. This was partially created by the terrorist, partially by the media, and partially by the government. The terrorist did it to push their political and religious agendas. The media did it to boost ratings. The government did it so that when they take away rights (like the patriot act allows them to do) you wont notice or say "its for the good of the nation. Are we safer? Yes, but not by alot.

not true. we are being proactive now, prior to 9/11 we kept our heads in the sand and thought that we are the strongest most powerful nation and that no one could hurt us. now we realize that there are many people out there that would do anything to hurt the US, and there are also countries that support those people, and we can no longer sit back and hope that the atlantic and pacific oceans will protect us, it is time to take action to stop these threats before they can act.

it seems like the more countries we go after, the more we are going to piss other groups off

We have to do what is best for our country, even if there are groups out there that dont agree with us, our security is and should be our top priority.
For the most part we wouldn't agree with these groups ( the ones that oppose us) or what they stand for in the first place anyways.
Clinton proved that buying off groups or ignoring them doesn't work.

im not arguing whether we should go into other countries, i just feel that as we do this, we should consider ideas like homeland security

puting the National guard on the borders, both borders, would be one of the best ways to help our security.
what ever happened to that missle defense plan that was talked about in the last election?

?, i dont know yeats would probably be better at answering that then me.
But no matter what else we do guarding our borders with force will help the most.
Until canada can start controling there imigration policies, we need to have guards patroling the northern border, in this day and age we are beyond the piont were we can have an "open border."
And the mexican border is just a joke and has needed serious guarding for years.

i agree, but it would be very expensive, so i don't see it happening, at least not until/if there is another attack and the people demand it...

I personally think it wont happen because politicans don't want to piss off the mexican voters.

exactly. the only way they could do it is if the had overwhelming public support for it, which would probably only come about if there is another terrorist attack. unfortunate that it would take an attack to prevent future attacks, but people are fairly short sighted.

thanks alot people this helps alot with writing my research paper!.... im taking a "poll" type thing too
If a country poses a significant threat to our security, should a pre-emptive(sp?) be launched?
Do you feel as if our government or military has adequately prepared us for terrorist strikes?
Do you feel that our nation is very secure, moderately secure, or not very secure.
yeah so if u can give me answers to those that would be great

I'm not sure what else can be done to tell you the truth. I think that having better security ad boarder crossing is a good idea, although that may ruffle the feathers of a few canadians (I don't know if its as big a deal in the US, but here we pride ourselves on sharing the worlds largest undefended boarder.) Tighter security in in air ports. (even more so) That sort of thing. But I think when push comes to shove, the bad guys will find a way in.

We used to pride ourselves on the worlds longest unarmed border, but in this day and age we can no longer have it, it now does more harm the good.

1. yes, but it totally depends on the threat, where its from (i.e. Location on earth), form of government, and how near in the future they might attack.
2. Yes, although i think the democrats in congress are doing every thing they can to allow another attack to happen, because they know they have no shot at winning the presidency unless something else happens. They basic made it there position that they care more about power then the american public.
3. More secure then pre 911, but not enough, we need to start guarding our borders better.
good luck with your paper.

300,000 to 500,000 people come across the mexican/american border every year, illegally. and then when they get here it costs taxpayers $2 Billion annually to provide them with health care, just in the border areas...it is definetly way past time to do something about the border.

And another thing about illegal immigration that bothers me, they come over here and they don't learn/know English. So we have to have Spanish-English classes in those border states. If someone wants to move here, I think they should learn our native language. Isn't Texas almost bi-lingual? That is using money to provide for them. Maybe I have had exagerated...

I think that is ridiculus. That has got to cost a lot of money. Have you heard the debate about the SAT being ethnically biased? People who speak ebonics say that it is biased against them. We debated this in my ENG 201 class last year.
