Which artist put out an awesome record that topped their previous effort?
best progression: AFI decemberunderground ->crash love
worst: brand new TDAG -> Daisy
before the flaming starts, im not saying daisy is a bad record, its just not a progression for BN. More like a lateral move musically and a step back lyrically.
Crash Love is awesome.

best: blessthefall's His Last Walk -> Witness
worst: Breaking Benjamin's all of their albums -> Dear Agony (this band has made no progression ever) lol.

This
I didn't get why everyone was going nuts over them at first because I only had Alligator, which is in no way a bad record, just not incredible. Then I got Boxer....WOW. Amazing.
I would also say that Fallout Boy from IOH to Folie a Deux was pretty impressive. Hadn't listened to them in years before that record. Now I'm gonna go check outside my window if pigs are flying because I discussed The National and FOB in the same post.

Weezer: The Blue Album ---> Pinkerton (I love both albums, but Pinkerton was such a risk, and they pulled it off so well that it ended up being arguably even better than Blue.)
Panic! At The Disco: A Fever You Can't Sweat Out ---> Pretty.Odd. (regardless of what your opinion of PO is, you have to admit it was a ballsy move. Personally, I can't possibly understand how anyone could prefer AFYCSO over PO)
blink-182: TOYPAJ ---> self-titled (TOYPAJ is a good album, but it really didn't show much progression from Enema. Self-titled is, imo, blink's best.)
My Chemical Romance: TCFSR ---> The Black Parade (MCR is alot like Panic for me, in that I thought their breakthrough album was good but not spectacular, but I fell in love with the album that followed it.)
The Format: Interventions & Lullabies ---> Dog Problems (Probably the best one, actually. The Format went from being an above average pop-rock band to releasing one of the best and most overlooked pop albums of the past decade.)
Green Day: Insomniac ---> Nimrod (Alot of people would say Warning was the start of Green Day experimenting with their music, but I would disagree. Nimrod sees GD dipping into so many different genres and styles, and they pull all of them off successfully, too.)
Relient K: Two Lefts Don't Make a Right, But Three Do ---> Mmmhmm (Very similar to the move blink made, Relient K matured, realized their strengths, and got even better at them.)

I hate to even chime in on all the pop-punk love, but:
In 1964, the Beatles released Beatles for Sale. In 1967, the Beatles released Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. The progression from Beatles for Sale to Help! to Rubber Soul (which inspired Pet Sounds ) to Revolver to Sgt. Pepper's in just 3 years is astounding and is a historical moment in music.

Apart from already mentioned The National, which I would put on top of my list, I have a couple of other mentions, all organzied alphabetically by band name for your convenience:
Band of Horses: Everything All The Time --> Cease To Begin
-- The first album had a couple of songs that did anything for me, but I found Cease To Begin to be a great album on the whole.
Beirut: Gulag Orkestar --> The Flying Club Cup
-- Both are amazing albums, but to make something as different from Gulag in terms of sound and feel and still be equally great is progression for sure.
Franz Ferdinand: You Could Have It So Much Better --> Tonight: Franz Ferdinand
-- Highly subjective this one, but I didn't really like their second whereas their third sat really well with me.
The Hives: Barely Legal --> Veni, Vidi, Vicious
-- Their debut album was "meh", sophomore was great. One of my all time favourites in the genre.
Pink Floyd: Pre-Dark Side of the Moon albums --> Dark Side of the Moon
-- I just can't get myself to appreciate the stuff they made before Dark Side of the Moon, but that and Wish You Were Here? Words are redundant, just listen.
Tom McRae: S/T --> Just Like Blood
-- The first is OK, Just Like Blood is fantastic.

i respectfully disagree. the fact that tom wrote more than half the songs shows that their song writing process was changing - if you've seen an of the videos that they took when they were recording you would know that they approached writing differently. also the underlying influences on that album were much different from toypaj - always has an 80s sound (which the band went out of their way to acknowledge), asthenia and i'm lost without you (which in my opinion is the worst last song on any blink record) hinted at the sound that tom would later bring to angels and airwaves (though less successfully I would argue). also there are no joke songs on that record/no funny lyrics. there are loads of examples of how they changed what they were doing and in my opinion, did so quite successfully, these are just a few

If "everything"="making sense when I write things on a music forum", then yes, I've clearly learned everything in the last 4 years.
Well, we all know that this forum is all that matters.

Riiiiight, that's exactly what I was insinuating. His post made no sense, and I was pointing that out. Did you read it?
'I'm 21, I'm cool. In two years, I'm 23. That's cool. Now I hate JEW - 23, but in two years, it's my favourite song. Cause I'm 23 and I'm cool.'
See? No fucking sense at all.

no one, and I mean NO ONE on this site is more annoying than you. you spend the majority of your day picking fights with people on here who haven't worded their thoughts "correctly" in your eyes. it's so trite. you nit-pick about the way something is said by someone in nearly 3/4 of your replies to other people's posts when you know good and well what they meant but just because their not an english major they can't word everything as eloquently as you can. get off your high horse dude. you're on a website message board.
Complaining about David is wayyyy more annoying than David could ever wish to be. Just stop.

Blue Rabbits Are Not Dirty Noisy Empty Wankers
best: deadlock, wolves -> manifesto
worst: eminem, encore -> relapse
Are you trying to say Relapse is worse than Encore? Lol. Even if that were true, the drop from TES to Encore is far greater. Encore was a pretty shitty record man.

Encore > Relapse by far. Much worse than TES to Encore.
Encore > Relapse by far. Much worse than TES to Encore.
Whaaaat? TES was a brilliant album, Encore was pretty rubbish. When did Encore ever get as good as Underground? When did Relapse ever get as bad as Ass Like That or Big Weenie? Encore isn't even on the same level as Relapse, and it was an incredible drop in quality from TES.

Mastodon, from Leviathan/Blood Maintain to Crack The Skye, if you don't hear a great progression here you have no sense of hearing whatsoever

Honestly the only other musical progression I could even compare to Pitt's would have to be Wayne Gretzky's. When he went from the Edmonton Oilers to the L.A Kings, he really took a step backward musically. Only his was a backwards musical progression. In reverse.

Brad Pitt and Wayne Gretzky are very comparable in this respect.
