View Full Version : Most Important Albums Of The Decade

The 2000's are coming to an end, and I've been gathering my thoughts about what the 10 most important releases of the decade were for me - how I discovered them, why I liked them so much, and why they're still important to me. My tastes have changed a lot as I went through middle school, high school, and college, and I blogged about my musical journey through those years (http://absolutepunk.net/journal.php?do=showjournal&j=27681) as a preparation to my personal Top 10 countdown.
Just wanted to throw this out there for others to start thinking about.... what albums of the 2000's were the most influential.... not on culture or the music world as a whole... but for you?

believe it or not, dude, just because you don't like something doesn't make it terrible.
and for the record, my chemical romance isn't much like what i listen to in current days, but it got me away from the radio rap i thought was bad ass back when i was 12.

Blink-182- Take off your pants and jacket and self titled
green day - american idiot
a skylit drive - wires and the concept of breathing
im only 16, so music wasnt a big part of my life until this decade. not even until the latter half. blink and green day got me into music. i dont listen to green day anymore though lol. and the last one was what got me into hardcore/screamo whatever you call it, the summer of 08.

American Idiot - Green Day was one of the first bands that really got me interested in music. I don't think I'd be who I am today without this album.
The '59 Sound - To me, this album is like a lost love. I don't know why, but my heart feels lighter when I listen to it.
Maybe I'll Catch Fire - This album holds a place in my heart because it got me through a pretty rough patch. I just love the feeling of this album.
The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me - TDAG came at a time when I was looking for something more in contemporary music and it delievered.
No Matter Where We Go! - This is an album that I listen to when I'm down to make me feel better. It works almost every time.

I'd personally consider Evanescence to Say Anything as a regression. At least the former of the two has Amy Lee's vocals.
Oh, and you quoting Todd was clearly a Freudian slip.

This is actually different. It's people's most important albums through their musical journey of the decade. I think my explanation is actually less clear than the OP's.

I don't want people to make fun of me for loving Taylor Swift, so I need a good list of name drops to balance things out and prove that I have a good taste in music.

I suppose I can give a list that isn't half kidding but rather truly shows the progression of my tastes over the decade.
Disciple - This Might Sting a Little
Haste the Day - When Everything Falls
Avril Lavigne - Let Go
mewithoutYou - Catch for Us the Foxes
Thrice - The Artist in the Ambulance
The National - Boxer
There's likely more, but these are likely the most important steps, the ones that shaped the paths of my tastes the most.

Blink-182 - Enema of the State (I think it's been about 10 years, maybe a little more)
The Dresden Dolls - S/T
Fall Out Boy - From Under The Cork Tree
The Dresden Dolls - Yes, Virginia...
My Chemical Romance - The Black Parade
Fall Out Boy - Infinity On High
The Format - Dog Problems
The White Stripes - Icky Thump
Cobra Starship - ¡Viva La Cobra!
Amanda Palmer - Who Killed Amanda Palmer
I'd say those were the most defining ones of my decade. There's more, but I didn't want it to be too lengthy. And I can't count Neutral Milk Hotel but that'd be after it all.

Boxer is much better, but Alligator great. It's less coherent, less meaningful at times, and is more indie-rockish. Still one of the best releases of the decade though, in my opinion.

Pop-punk is not horrible, you just have to dig a little deeper. I like alot of the stuff you seem to like, and pop-punk too. It won't ruin your "cred" to admit that you like pop-punk.

Alright, that's fine. But if you don't like it based solely on the fact that it doesn't get high ratings on pitchfork, then i shake my head at you. I have seen too many of my friends turn their heads on music that they love just because it doesn't seem cool to listen. I love bands like Animal Collective, Bon Iver and Neutral Milk Hotel, but I also love bands like Valencia, Yellowcard and Dashboard Confessional. Tastes don't have to be defined to one specific genre.

Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory: This was big in middle school, it helped me realize that music is something that I can find and love today, it doesn't have to be the "classics." I no longer listen to Hybrid Theory but it's still set as the default soundtrack on Counter-Strike for the Xbox for the nostalgia factor.
Brand New - Deja Entendu: I remember my brother telling me that Sic Transit was a pretty cool song but that he didn't like most of the album since it was "depressing". I gave Guernica a spin and fell in love. This album sort of gave me the first push in the direction of listening to music that most of AP.net would consider "good".
Deathcab For Cutie - Entire Discography: I wrestled in high school and I cut a lot of weight, more than your normal wrestler. I can't remember parts of my sophomore winter because I was so dehydrated and exhausted from making weight and my grades obviously suffered too. I listened to Deathcab while I rode the stationary bike in my basement and while doing situps in the sauna, it helped a lot.
Elliott Smith - New Moon: I was browsing metacritic around the time New Moon came out and had never heard of Elliott before. I saw the album had rave reviews so I gave it a spin. The emotion and lyricism, actual poetry, in his songs was beautiful and something I hadn't heard before. Then I noticed that his fingers were like spiders in that he was playing really complicated things that still sounded gentle and simple.
Kevin Devin - Make the Clocks Move: I don't know where I found this, but I remember it being one of the first albums with political statements that I didn't think was misguided or preaching to me or fanatical. I also found myself listening to Kevin when writing papers. I don't know why but I find it easier to write with some Kdev on.
Manchester Orchestra - I'm Like a Virgin Losing a Child: Made me go to my first "real" concert that I had a consciously decided to go to (instead of going with family, etc). So that's something.
I could go a little more in depth but I don't feel like searching through my old hard drives to see everything I've listened to this past decade. Those were just the off the top of my head albums and bands that shaped the 2000s for me musically. I still listen to all but Linkin pretty regularly.

1. Relient K- Two Lefts Don't Make A Right...But Three Do (The album that got me away from pop music and boy bands, and helped me discover REAL music)
2. Jimmy Eat World- Bleed American (Love at first listen. They have been my favorite band since I first heard "Sweetness")
3. Emery- The Question (The album that helped me get into heavier music and enjoy screaming vocals)
4. Fall Out Boy- Take This To Your Grave and 5. Yellowcard- Ocean Avenue (I didn't grow up listening to Blink- 182 or New Found Glory, so these were the albums that made me fall in love with pop-punk)
Each of these albums was essential in shaping the music lover I am today and led to other very important records later in my life such as:
Thrice- Vheissu
Mae- The Everglow
Death Cab For Cutie- Transatlanticism
mewithoutYou- Catch For Us The Foxes

Oh my god some of the answers I've read are just wishful thinking. Here are mine:
Fall Out Boy - Take This To Your Grave
1,000s of rip off bands. Even if they don't know it.
Dashboard Confessional - Swiss Army Romance
Basically made the whole sappy emo acoustic thing huge. Tons of rip offs.
Underoath - They're Only Chasing Safety
Pretty much any self proclaimed screamo band is ripping that off.
The Postal Service - Give Up
Made the whole corky, programmed, soft spoken singing style popular. countless rip offs
Cartel - Chroma
At first thought you wouldn't think so, but the guitar riffs in this record have been ripped off by so many pop punk bands now that it is almost just the standard way to play these days
Death Cab For Cutie - Transatlanticism & Plans
No need to explain.
Regardless if some of these bands were ripping off other people, these were the records that went on to influence. These are the first REALISTIC records that came to mind.

Leaving Through the Window- Something Corporate
this album and seeing them in concert changed my life. Something Corporate was the first band to introduce me to the scene, even though I don't consider them a scene band
For All of This - The Early November
One of my favorite e.p.'s of all time.
Deja Entendu- Brand New
Amazing.
Lifted- Bright Eyes
This album had a huge impact on me. I remember the day I got it. I was working at CD Jungle (a local record store) and it was in the pile of trade ins. I had heard of them, but never listened. I put the album in the store CD player and was hooked. Shortly after buying every Bright Eyes album ever made. And eventually even naming my son Conor.

As far as my top ones, it's super tough... I'll have to think on it... but as far as most important to popular music...
MM's Good News for People Who Love Bad News and Franz Ferdinand's first S/T album were instrumental in bring indie sound to alternative radio this decade. They started a break away from the Creed shit rock that dominated up until that point.
Bleed American brough emo's golden children into the limelight, exposing a whole different group to Clarity (one of the best "emo" albums ever, period).
American Idiot was the best concept album in popular music in decades. Also cemented the already popular punk band into one of the world's biggest rock acts.
While I hate Coldplay, Parachutes, easily makes the list.
Other possibilites, Eminem (first white rapper to make noise since BB hit the scene in the late 80's), Kelly Clarkson/American Idol (very annoying but very influential in this decade), American IV by Cash introduign a new generation to classic and outlaw country... sure there are tons of others, this is just the top of my head.

I honestly don't think that'll be a problem. There are some really great songs on that record, including my favourite by The National. You may even like it more.
Hm. We agree that "Handcuffs" is a good closer and disagree about Daisy, so we'll see.
It's not my place to say that, they're just not on my "influential records list".

Dang, I mentioned that in my half joking list but failed to remember it in my real list. It's definitely had a big influence on my tastes.

Top 10 sorry
Blink 182 - Enema of the State - in 4th grade this album and band saved me from the Boy band that my peers were listening to
Finch- What it is to burn- Saved me from the trash radio rock i.e. stonesour drowning pool etc. This i would have to say really opened me up to the rest of the albums on this list.
Silverstein- When Broken Is easily fixed- this knocked my socks off when it came out (10 song version) they were still a small band and no in Texas heard of them. The emotion was so raw to me and got me thru some heavy stuff.
Relient K- /Anatomy of Tongue in Cheek - showed me Christians could still rock and be funny
Alexisonfire- Alexisonfire - i had no idea what George was saying but i loved the epicness
Paramore- All we know is falling- didnt know girls could rock that hard, and i found out who i wanted to marry
Brand New -TDAGARIM - It proved to me that you dont have to make the same record twice to be awesome.
Alkaline Trio- MAybe Ill catch fire/GD - the album was so raw to me they seemed so sincere and i just really related to those guys
GlassJaw- Everything you ever wanted to know about silence- um i thought i had girl problems
Brand New- Deja Entendu- I listened to it when it first came out in my youth pastors brothers car didnt think much of it till 2 years later i picked it up again and it changed my life and was my first tatoo

I'd say those were the most defining ones of my decade. There's more, but I didn't want it to be too lengthy. And I can't count Neutral Milk Hotel but that'd be after it all.

Some albums that really changed the type of music I listen to and the way I judge new music:
Jimmy Eat World - Bleed American
The first album that I ever really got obsessed with. I didn't truly realize how great it was at the time, but it was one I kept returning to over and over (and still do), and over time I understood how much I love it.
Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP
It made me realize what good rap actually was.
Modest Mouse - Good News for People Who Like Bad News
I still listened to shitty music when I got this, and I continued to listen to shitty music for a while after, but this was the first album that exposed me to an entirely different genre than what is normally played on the radio. I got it because I loved Float On, and it allowed me to listen to the rest of it with an open mind, and that ended up really expanding my horizons and my tastes for music, even though I didn't recognize it then.
Finch - What It Is to Burn
This album unquestionably had the greatest influence on the music I listen to. My brother left a mix CD for me when he went to Iraq, and it had the title track on it, and for some reason that song grabbed me; it wasn't like anything I'd heard before. Prior to hearing this album, I never gave a shit about anything that wasn't played on the radio, but after being completely obsessed with WIITB, I realized that there was this whole world of music outside MTV that was even better than the mainstream.
Brand New - The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me
IMHO, the best album of the decade.

Music that has been important to me lately:
-Cursive: Tim Kasher and Co. has put out nothing but greatness in my eyes. I discovered through the album "Art is Hard" which was on a broken iPod I was given. Since then, I have amassed every Cursive LP and EP, including splits. "Domestica" is a mind-blowing album in my opinion, and an album that helped get me through a very hard time. "Happy Hollow" had a very different sound, yet the religious concepts expressed within it are ver eye-opening. "Mama, I'm Swollen" sways away from their post-hardcore origins with more acoustics and horns than ever, but is enjoyable after a few listens.
-Billy Talent: I have been a BT fan since "Billy Talent" was released, and no, I am not a Canadian. Ben has very unique vocals, and for some reason caught me. Their music is not overly complicated or too basic. Ian is an amazing guitarist at times, and the bass and drums just roll in to one rocking Canadian quartet. "III" did not match my expectations, but shows that bands do grow-up occasionally. All three of their albums are great to me, and their ska-rock album, "Watoosh!" released the name Pezz is pretty good, as well.
The following bands and albums need no explanation:
-Say Anything's "Is a Real Boy"
-At the Drive-In's "Relationship of Command" or "in.casino.out"
-The Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Californication"
-Nine Inch Nails' "The Fragile"
-The Early November "The Mother, The Mechanic, and The Path" (the concept album/musical, "The Path" is enthralling.)
Just my two cents. And I apologize that some of these were not released this decade. (i.e. Californication, in.casino.out, and The Fragile)
