What's the sound supposed to be like on this album? More like Continuum or Heavier Things or neither. It's hard to tell from the single...

he said it's poppier than continuum, which makes me pissed. all three songs i've heard though sound more in the vein of continuum, with who says being the poppiest (which is why it's the single, i'm sure)

Half of My Heart is featuring Taylor Swift? Ugh, I'm not a fan of hers and Half of My Heart is my favorite song off of the cd that I've heard so far.
Hopefully it will still end up being fantastic.

One thing I've learned from John is that you can never tell what the album will sound like from the single. However, my guess is more like Heavier Things (which I wouldn't have a problem with- its my all-time favorite album) since he said he was going to take a different approach than the one he used with Continuum.
Grabbed it for my avy.

Heavier Things is my favorite of his as well, though it's mostly for personal reasons. Loved Continuum though, so I wouldn't mind either way (nor would I mind if it's some kind of blend of the two). I'm not a big fan of the single. It's ok, but nothing too exciting. Then again, Your Body is a Wonderland and Waiting on the World to Change were by far the worst songs on their respective albums, though I loved Bigger Than My Body as the first single from Heavier Things. This will probably end up just being the safest song on the album.

False. People need to stop saying this.

they both have:
1. same key
2. full slap/pick on the first note every new stanza
3. g -> d/f# walkdown in the bridge
4. open pick on the top e string throughout the instrumental opening, verses, and interludes

it's a justified comparison. obviously they aren't exactly the same (and i love the song so who cares), but they share enough similarities that you can't just label my obviously hyperbole of a comment false.

Only part I disagree with.

I can only agree with you on the same key thing- other than that, I disagree. I play Stop This Train all the time and the guitar parts sound different to me  I mean I can hear a few similarities, but not enough to say one ripped off of the other.

Stop This Train tab: http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/j/john_mayer/stop_this_train_ver3_tab.htm
Who Says tab: http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/j/john_mayer/who_says_ver2_tab.htm

According to those, "Who Says" is, in fact, more complicated.

of course they're not exactly the same; that'd be ludicrous. my only point is that he could slapped a capo on the first fret or something and it would sound completely easy.
do you play who says? it looked pretty easy from the tabs i saw...especially compared to stop this train

there is a website called mystupidmouth.com. its the most credible forum for john mayer. the guy who runs it has listend to the cd and said musically its different then anything hes ever done. i guess you could compare it to heavier things im assuming just from the previews of stuff ive heard. but he went on to explain musically its pretty different, he didnt comment on the lyrics. but said it could take people a few listens to dig it. well see im bummed theres another cover on there but john mayer never fails

Ahhh, I always liked 83 a lot. I wouldn't say there are any "bad" songs either, but when I listen I usually skip Your Body is a Wonderland. The only song by him I've ever really disliked is Waiting on the World to Change, which I really liked at first. Then I heard it way too many times and realized how repetitive it was. I don't like it as the opening track, either.

i can't believe it, but i find this album INCREDIBLY DISAPPOINTING through the first listen. ugh.

Realllllly cheesy lyrics (more so than previous efforts) and flat out boring musicianship.

i just don't find this to be clever at all, maybe i've just grown tired of mayer. I will give it more listens, however.

Ughh John Mayer pisses me off. He's so ridiculously talented at guitar yet he puts out these shitty pop songs like Half of my heart and Friends, Lovers, or Nothing. Don't get me wrong there are some really good songs on the album like Edge of Desire and Do You Know Me but he just has so much potential to make an amazing album. Maybe one day he will come to his full potential.

That's totally true. I think his best work is probably on the Try! live album with the trio. It's a lot more focused on the band but his voice still shines through and he does some GREAT soloing.
