true...but even with basketball he is obnoxious to have to hear..

I saw him during halftime of the one game...and he repeated what the other analysts said, just at +20 dB.

I think he makes legit points at times..but the fact that he overly emphasizes them, he can't even get an audience to distinguish between major/minor points because his is always yelling.

I used to hate on Stephen A Smith too. I would agree with everyone that he is out of his element discussing anything besides basketball, and he talks WAY too loud. However, things changed a couple months ago. One of my good friends from HS had a friend who worked for Stephen A Smith's show "Quite Frankly". He got us tickets so I went. My whole perception of Stephen A Smith changed.
First off, in person he is extremely engaging and charismatic. While watching the taping of the show I never felt like he was screaming and he did an excellent job of interviewing Tony LaRussa. During the commericials he would get up and joke with the crowd like a normal guy. He was very very funny.
After the show he stayed for over 45 minutes answering any and all questions. He didn't dodge anything. He looked the person who asked him the question right in the eye and answered them honestly. A teacher had brought three of his students in to talk to watch Smith. The teacher asked Smith what he would suggest to his students as they were looking to get into journalism and possibly television. Smith detailed his life story and all the obstacles he overcame and how hard he had to work and how many overtime shifts he worked for no pay just to get where he is. During his ten minute dialogue no one looked away from him. It was unbelievable, he commanded that room like nothing I had ever seen before. When he was done, he extolled on the students the value of hard work and determination. It was amazing. From that day forward I had gained a new found respect for Stephen A Smith.

that is awesome. i'd like to meet him. I've found that he does yell on tv, but i think he makes very good points and is humorous. i don't think he's nearly as bad as say, skip bayless (who i don't mind that much, either).

From that day forward I had gained a new found respect for Stephen A Smith. See, I never make any comments on his personality normally, just his on-air one, for this reason. He doesn't seem like a bad person...he is just not the best on-air personality, and I hate his approach.

When I say yelling...it's the constant over-emphasis of every point. Most analysts (Bill Walton aside) have two to three major things they say in a game or show. Like, they proclaim someone to be the best ever, etc and they emphasize it. Smith has this tendency to emphasize trivial things...like every sentence of his opening monologue on his show (the three times I watched it)....only to follow it up with "I mean, am I right?" or something inane like that.

He is an excellent source on NBA basketball, but his show obviously covers more than that, and that is where he falls well short

I also wanted to add...when he actually tones it down to make a very serious point, he is very effective. I used to commend him in the beginning because he knew that the "yelling", at times, was useful and it got him a lot of attention. Then he made the mistake of relying on it too much

haha, Skip goes for the sensationalist shit too much...and he lacks the charisma to get away with it. Woody Paige says some absurd shit too, but he's got that goofy persona...so it works...Bayless, not even close.

I can understand that point, of which I do agree to a degree. I just wanted to share my story.

It's an awesome story...it makes me want to meet him actually...it's easier to criticize him through the TV screen

or we can have kids come in predicting broken ankles to the reigning NFL MVP and that alexander will suck because a mediocre WR left the team, as well as claiming he knew Barbaro would break his leg, as well.
