Good, as in talented sure.

easy example, I don't really care for John Mayer's music, but he is clearly a talented musician, and a seemingly fun guy.

I enjoy only a handful of songs from Radiohead, but I can definitely appreciate the musicianship put into their work.

Artists/bands can be talented as far as instruments go, but sometimes the voice and/or lyrics just ruin everything or vice versa.

I fucking hate Matthew Bellamy's style of singing but they're all obviously good musicians.

Yes. Conversely, I have no issues liking something I don't believe is all that good.

I don't like U2, Coldplay, or System of a Down, but I know they are good bands.

two words: led zeppelin.

my complete lack of enjoyment of them (ie robert plant's voice) is inversely proportional to the amount of respect i have for them.

i hope i'm not like that when i start listening to them. it's weird, though, i only liked treos' second album, which was after casey left.

the answer isnt as obvious as it sounds though...

i mean of course MOST bands play their instruments well and MOST bands have a singer with accurate pitch and with a nice harmony from any back up singer. Of course there are a few bands where most people would beg to differ...therefore it's impossibly to acknowledge a band as being good, if you honestly simply believe they dont know how to play instruments accurately.

After that it's all subjective to what's good or not.... intricate notation, "creative" song writing, "catchyness" of a tune...it's whatever your ear likes the best i guess. I dont know the science of why certain people like certain music? I wanna know!

Anyways...so the answer is "yes" I can always acknowledge that a band knows how to play music. But as a FAN of a certain blend/genre of music, I can't honestly say other types of music is GOOD.

A definite yes. A good example for me would be The Fall of Troy. While they are talented musicians, especially the vocalist and lead guitarist, I don't care much for their music. That's just one example for me, of course, there are many others.

you know, it's funny, some bands just know how to really nail a live show. I'm not the biggest fan of mewithoutYou's discography (love the new disc; that's the exception), but holy hell do they put on a good live show. Might be the best live act I've seen.

Yeah, I totally agree. There are certain bands that I would love to see live that I never listen to on record. The live show is a whole different experience; if someone offered me to go to a zeppelin show (purely hypothetical, of course), for example, I'd go in a heartbeat.

One of my biggest pet peeves ever. When someone says so&so sucks just because they don't personally like them. I understand some bands suck and it is concrete fact rather than mere opinion. But usually it is the latter and it just bugs me when people trash a band just because they don't like 'em. I acknowledge when bands have talent.

It's obvious that sometimes there is a band in the world that is loved by many people but you just can't get into them. My case is Metallica, Grizzly Bear, Vampire Weekend... I know they are good, but I just can't really enjoy their music.
