depends what kinda of emo style ur going for, but dan hoerner from sunny day real estate is sweet, and john nolan owned the emo-punk genre on the first tbs cd...and obv tom delonge, tho not the greatest guitarist, is the biggest guitar icon (ava might be considered emo, i dunno)

emo is punk....so John Nolan did not own the emo-punk genre.
I like TBS, i'm just saying.
The guys from Hot Cross probably take that title.

Old Hot Cross fo sho. The two guitarists (Josh and Casey) had the sickest resume: You & I, Neil Perry, The Now, and Joshua Fit for Battle. Throw Collars to the Wind and Better A Corpse Than A Nun are so damn catchy.

Yeah, after reading an argument on the other hardcore/emo forum I go to, I'm convinced that screamo isn't really a genre that's distinguishable from emo. and that saetia rocks hard.

Hands down in my mind, Tom from The Fall of Troy.
just because he plkays technical SOUNDing stuff doesnt make him the best. Recreating that sound is so easy any half good guitarist could play adn your dumb. Just jumbling up every song with over the top guitar riffs doesnt maek you good....
x togepi x
05/28/06, 10:24 PM
Do you play guitar?
The fall of troy is awesome. Trying playing their riffs, I'm better than "half-good" at guitar, and I can't play their stuff. Besides, you're ignoring the amount that they improv in concert. I'm pretty sure their improvisation is going to make their guitar player way better than anyone you can throw out there.
Ilovepoprock
05/28/06, 10:46 PM
improvisation isnt special if you have experience and know what scale and key to play in. FAll of troy is not special, and how would you know what i can and can not play? your completely false statement makes any good arguement you could have coem up with completely void, because we all know your stupid...
x togepi x
05/28/06, 10:53 PM
I didn't say "improv makes them special" i said "THEIR improv" makes them special. They're not just wanking around one scale in concert.
I never implied you sucked at guitar or anything. So you're right. I have no idea what you can and cannot play. But, i do know what I can, and I can't play FoT stuff. and like i said I'm half decent".
your complete inability to spell "argument" and "come" pretty much make everything you just said sound even more stupid.
seriously, back your shit up. name me an emo guitarist better than them.
(yeah guys, i know they're probably not really emo, but I don't think he can do it)

there's a fine line between typos and mispelles...if that's a word. takign back sunday guy, or brand new guy. dont know their actual names. perhaps not mroe technical, but better all the same. being a good guitarist isn't being able to write the most technical bad ass sounding riff, or improv a crazy solo. Being a good guitarist is defined by being inventive and bringing the emotion in music to life, by expressing it through your guitar...:)
x togepi x
05/28/06, 11:09 PM
You look like a moron when you call someone stupid and make a bunch of typos.
Taking Back Sunday and Brand New are not inventive. I have never listened to a TBS song and said "wow...that guitar really makes me feel something." That's where the lyrics come in. But, I'm sure that FoT can play TBS and BN songs. I can, and as I already admitted, I can't play FoT.
Ilovepoprock
05/28/06, 11:11 PM
yes they can play them, there are probably millions of people all over the world who can play FOT and TBS and BN, but can they write it? no. that is where the talent comes in...
x togepi x
05/28/06, 11:14 PM
I used to write songs that sound like BN/TBS before they came out and I don't consider myself a talented guitar player.
Most of TBS/BN's chord progressions are fairly common. the reason why people like these two bands is because of their lyrical content and how the band sounds as a whole, not because the guitar players are bad asses.
Ilovepoprock
05/28/06, 11:31 PM
nobody likes a band just because of a guitarist, they like the band as a whole. And as guitarist The guys from brand new or TBS compliment the band better, thus contributing to make them better the FOT....
x togepi x
05/28/06, 11:39 PM
Nobody likes a band because of a guitarist?
the ONLY reason i like fall of troy is because of their guitar playing. if they had a different guitar player, I'd probably think they were just another generic scene band.
Are you honestly going to tell me that people who play generic chord progressions are better than Fall of Troy?
Ilovepoprock

Was it the one that said people don't like TBS/BN for their guitars? you backed that up by saying that nobody likes any band for their guitar playing.
Remember, this is the thread where the first post i made said that I liked TBS. I've pretty much worn out my copy of Tell All You Friends...but just because I like them, doesn't mean I won't admit that they're not better guitar players than FoT.
Ilovepoprock

And I think after I taught a monkey power chords, it could play "I will play my game beneath the spin light". If you want to talk about TBS, Tell All Your Friends beat some ass, but then the talent left and now none of their MUSIC impresses me. Palm muted eighth note power chords get pretty old....it's the eighth notes! THE EIGHTH NOTES! THEY DRIVE ME CRAZY!

It's not that hard. But most the bands who sound anything like that don't play that "complicated", even though its not THAT hard. Don't ask me why.
Same with Rufio for that matter. Next to any B-level metal band their guitarists aren't anything, but for pop punk they really stand out. Slick Shoes too, well, except the albums Greg played guitar on.

Are you guys not listening to music? The very definition of emo has changed since it's become more mainstream... Deal with it!
AFI used to be a solid horror punk band, of this I am aware. Now that they have gained success after a toned down, more melo-dramatic record with Sing the Sorrow and Decemberunderground, they fall under "emo". Done deal. Emo's not a bad thing, ladies and gentleman.
Anyway, you can't deny Jade. JADE.

The definitions of words don't change for lame trends. for emo to become what you say it is, we'd have to see this trend lasting for much much longer than it already has. Once again, read this thread (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=140443). it answers everyone of your arguments.

You're going to have a pretty difficult time convincing anyone today that, the bands you don't consider "emo", aren't. There is a trend, yes, and that is how most people define bands... You don't define bands by a "Trend"; that is how you define and call out bullshit. Trends are how you pacify the ignorant masses. What this music is now, is recycled teenage angst from major labels/50 year old men in suits. It is the same music that comes out every 5 years. They find some "pseudo underground icon" dress them up in some rebellious garb that the masses will eat up. Then they make a profit off it you, they rape you in the ass while you feed off of their bullshit. You buy in to their colorful "rebel" advertisements, buy their "rebel" clothes from Hot Topic/Pac Sun/AbercrombieMadeInChina, buy their "rebel" music and dance to it, all while they make a profit on being a "rebel". See how the system works? That is how you kill a viable subculture.
Think you still know what Emo is? You shouldn't, you've been fed a hose full of lies. Emo is Hardcore. Emo came from Punk. How the hell could it bleed in to the Punk genre then?
Why don't you go protest war and buy records from EMI. Better yet...buy something from Sony records back catalog. Then you can listen to it while you check your Myspace..I'm quite sure NewsCorp. would love to hear from you.

You could argue that punk started with the Ramones, but that'd be wrong. and you could argue that emo started with the cure, but that would also be wrong since the cure aren't a hardcore band. The cure were post-punk. They have no connection to the emo scene because emo isn't this lame, psuedo-goth subculture that you think it is.
Then you can listen to it while you check your Myspace..I'm quite sure NewsCorp. would love to hear from you.
you are jesus.
you know, whenever someone mentions absolutepunk, i automatically associate it with shit. because from everything ive read on here, pretty much everyone has terrible misconceptions about the music they supposedly listen to. i honestly never saw much punk on here, just FOB and TBS threads and how "emo" and "punk" they were. but posts like this, and posters that do such, have actually restored my faith in the fact that there are people out there who actually do know what emo is. and that i could join a site like this and actually experience people who hold the same musical values i do. its refreshing.
what a relief.
