Remember when Sony (http://www.sonymusic.com) decided to put a root-kit on their albums? Well the final settlement has been released (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/5007578.stm). Sony must stop using the program and consumers who bought a CD with the XCP software can receive a replacement disc. They will also receive either a cash payment of $7.50 and one free album download, or three free album downloads.

is there anywhere we can look at a list of albums containing the program so we know if we bought one or not?

EDIT: I'm pretty sure there's more, but I can't find the complete list.

I bought the acceptance album and when I tried to burn it to my computer, all I got was static junk on every song (you can hear the song, but there's a TON of static)...How can you remove that software out of ur comp? That's what I wanna know...

I wish Sony would screw up like this some more. This was a sweet deal. I got the Acceptance CD to work the first time I bought it, but once this came around I sent it back. I got a new Acceptance CD (mine was scratched anyway), and I got the new Switchfoot, Lamb of God, and Verve Pipe CDs. Awesome!

Well I bought Faso Latido and managed to rip it to my computer just fine (okay, I think there was a snag or two, but in the end everything was fine)...what, do people out there only use iTunes or something for ripping? Furthermore, I would hope that since I have done at least two Windows re-installs since I put Faso Latido in my computer, my computer is safe from this XCP shit. I guess I'll send in my Faso Latido, if I'm not too lazy to do it.

wow i just read about the program that gets installed when you put a Sony CD into your computer cd drive. i know a bit about computers, and what it does is so very illegal. the people at Sony must not really know anything about computers or consulted with anyone who knows a thing about computers, because what that program does is so harmful to a computer's speed and security. it actually purposely HIDES processes from the user.
the fact that there was no safeguard preventing Sony from ever releasing such an obviously malicious piece of software is pretty scary. the "XCP software," as they call it, should have never been put onto these albums.
