View Full Version : Album Longevity

How often do you guys spend listening to an album weighed against others? It's obviously a matter of eating up your entertainment time, but I personally don't listen to a vast range of bands, because I prefer to get comfortable with my favourites over time. Then, when I go digging for something new, I rinse and repeat.

I don't like to wear an album out too quickly, I like to listen to it for a steady amount over a long time to enjoy it most. Disappointed this summer cuz I listened to the new Rx Bandits album like a banshee for 3 weeks and I've listened to it like twice since.

I usually have a myriad of 3-4 albums that I mainly listen to over a few weeks while also listening to everything else. Slowly but surely one of those albums drop out of my current favorites and another one comes in. It is the circle of life.

I listen to so many artists and so many albums and that takes away from the longevity of a lot of albums that would otherwise get more time if there wasn't just so much music out there to listen to and digest. I don't see how someone could say they like to listen to a few "favorites" to see how they sit. How do you know other albums aren't your favorites if you don't give them the same attention the ones you are claiming to be your favorites are getting? Its a hard line to draw but I end up listening to a lot more artists and whatever comes out of the fray with the most time become my faves.

I use last.fm to keep track of it all. Love that software.

I listen to a John Mayer album every week and have a group of about 10 albums that get a shitload of playtime. Other than that, I listen to a lot of albums, but they usually only get listened to once every other month.

I won't call an album a favourite unless I feel compelled to listen to it back to back. I don't worry much about wearing them out. I just listen to what I want when I want it, and if after 60 solid listens I don't want it that often anymore, so be it. I'm not sick of the album per se, just lose interest in the face of new albums.

I have a playlist of NFG, four year strong, set your goals, a day to remember, and the wonder years and i just add to that playlist everytime one of them comes out with new material. I listen to the playlist at the gym every day so I hear the same songs over and over 5 times a week and end up playing it on weekends when im hanging out drinking with my roommates.

On the other hand there are some albums by bands that I love that as soon as I get I overplay them to death. A few recent ones (that aren't on my just mentioned playlist) include GNV FLA (less than jake) , In Defense Of The Genre (say anything), Rise and Fall Rage and Grace (offspring), and 21st Century Breakdown (green day, couldnt get into it as much as american idiot though)

I generally overplay an album within the first two or three weeks of getting it and then don't listen to it all the way through for another few months or so. The most notable exceptions I can think of right now are Thrice - Beggars, Jawbreaker - Dear You, and especially Hopesfall - The Satellite Years. I listen to that one probably a couple times a month. It's like comfort food.

This year I have found myself listening to about 20 bands/artists and nothing else. Those 20 bands keep me satisfied.

i go on random tangents with music...for some reason i really want to listen to jay-z right now
every week i revert to about 10 albums when i don't know what to listen to, and the rest of the time i'm exploring new(ish) music. if something grabs me on first listen i might spin it a few more times in a row (right now i want to give bob dylan's modern times a chance because i didn't like it back in 2006 and i think i might like it better now)

The same thing happened to me. That's a bitching record though.

I think about this quite often. Sometimes, if I find a new album, I'm afraid that if I play it too much, I won't listen to it anymore. Now, with discovering new albums all the time, and with all the old nostalgic ones, I don't really get that very often.

I will listen to Leaving Through The Window at least once every week. It's the only album that I have that seems to have it's lasting value.

Similar to what other people have said...there are a few solid albums I always stick to when I'm not really into anything else. Then I have those new albums that come up and kinda take over all of my music listening time for a while (like a phase). I just play that same album every time. And then I get a bit tired of it and listen to it occasionally afterwards, revert back to my old trustworthy albums, and stay with those til I find something else good and interesting. Sometimes I get albums I listen to a couple of times, but can't get into them, so I just leave them there on my ipod :p -ignore pile-

i listen to new music practically every night.
but despite the huge number of albums i have available for my listening pleasure, i only ever really sit down to enjoy and savour the flavour of an old time favourite like Infinity on High, Grace, Outlandos d' Armour, Cat Stevens etc etc.....

old time favourite like Infinity on High
Curious choice of words.

As for the thread itself, music's playing all day long on my end so there's never any concern over giving records too little/much attention.
