first off, the Spanish Moon is the rankiest, nastiest place i think to go...every time i come out of that place i smell horrible...but it's still a really decent venue...anyway...on with the show...
I was suprised to see that only three bands were playing. First off was the Life and Times. They were pretty good. I didn't really think wow, that was amazing, but i just enjoyed it. For seeing an opener that's a good thing to say. He had this effect on his mic. It wasn't a delay, but i couldn't quite put my finger on what it was...but it made his voice carry, almost like another melody on top of the music. Again it was good.
I don't ever get to see many opening bands that are better than the opener. On occassion this has happened though. Decibully to Snake Cross Crown would be one of those exceptions. Mono is probably one of the best things i've ever seen live. Not like a huge concert with lights, and a big stage...no gimmicks....just four people on stage creating what a something like Trans Siberian Orchestra would portray. Think Explosions in the Sky x10! The songs were pretty long and ambient, but EVERYTHING WORKED! EVERYTHING! The builds, the heavy, the soft, the melodies, every layer. If you EVER get a chance to see this band, do it!
I was pretty floored after seeing Mono, but i still had high expectations for Pelican. And they delivered. It's one thing to hear their cd, but i think it sounds even better live. The only thing i would have expected was for them to go off every once and a while, like imporv from the original tracks, but they stuck pretty close by. I know Explosions in the Sky does this, so i guess I was just hoping. But they were still good, and what i expected.
This was a really really good show! And again, shows how much sound you can produce that's powerful, and still not say a single word.

man i'm sorry, this was the first time i'd ever heard the life and times and mono so i'm not sure, but Pelican played an even number of songs off of Austrailasia and The Fire In Our Throats....some of the songs were March Into the Sea, Drought, and Nightendday. sorry again man.
