I've been on a major "chill" music phase, and one of my favorite things to do is read and listen to music at the same time, among other things.

I lol'd.
Also I can't listen to anything with vocals and read at the same time. Too much for me.

I don't listen to anything unless I'm trying to drown out other noise. When I do that, I have to stick to instrumental, or its distracting. I use Explosions in the Sky, Pelican, Russian Circles, and the soundtracks to Requiem for a Dream and Pan's Labyrinth.

Anything instrumental. Lyrics tend to distract me when I read. Listen to some instrumental jazz - Coltrane, Davis, Monk, the list goes on.
Port Blue - Owl City on a chill pill and without the lyrics (literally same dude).

Instrumental stuff is always good for reading and writing.
If I had to listen to something with words whilst reading it'd probably be As Tall As Lions.

I agree with the people who recommended Caspian and This Will Destroy You. Glass America and Finneyerkes are both good too, Glass America has very little vocals and Finneyerkes has none at all.
If you don't mind lyrics, I suggest Elliott Smith and Slowreader. (no really, Slowreader is good)
