I've been hearing a lot of different opinions on this one, so I thought I'd make a poll. Here we go.

i dont know about for pop punk, but the rockerverb has an amazing distortion tone with a lot of range

I picked a Marshall because of its sharp, yet crunchy overdrive. I don't think the Vox is ever good for heavy distortion. I've never played a Mesa, but have always wanted to, so I'm unsure about that one. Orange also has a beautiful tone, but I prefer that for more ambience (reverb and delay).

orange sounds beautiful, but i'm going with the mesa for those tight hooks.

Honestly, any of those would be just fine for pop-punk. It really comes down to personal preference.

you can make just about any amp sound appropriate for pop punk, or any sound. you just have to become one with the knobs... its a zen thing

I picked the Marshall JCM900 because I used to have that head and it was great, although I have played most of these choices before. I have a Fender Supersonic head now, and I'm not sure I'd trade it for anything!

marshall JCM900, fucking EASILY. for other genres an orange can have more character and a vox AC30 can be more tasteful, but for pop-punk the marshall destroys. i have one and enjoy its benefits every day.

here's an example of what the 900 sounds like on my own record with an epiphone les paul:

if you're thinking of getting one, though, make sure you get the "master volume" model, either the 2100 or the 2500. do not get the "dual reverb" 4100/4500 models, i feel that the american tubes they used in that one strip it of what makes it a marshall.

when playing a mesa you're almost always going to get a tone that's closer suited to metalcore/hard-rock. if you're looking for a sound with a sharp/jagged edge, the marshall in general is pretty much one of the best amps you can get. the mids come off really strong in any marshall you buy, especially older ones, whereas mesa's are geared toward a more scooped tone.

and i agree with you about vox's. an AC30 has the most heavenly clean tones you will ever play anywhere, and it remains fantastic on light to mid distortion, but when you put it on full force, while it has a lot of character its definitely not something you'd want for pop-punk. bands like the weakerthans make it work though, so its definitely worthwhile for other genres if you're looking for something that sounds different but still has some snarl and power to it.

P.S. dude, you live in the town i grew up in. do you happen to know of a band that used to be pretty popular in the local scene there in jacksonville for like 4 years until they broke up recently, called the sophomore attempt? those are some of my good friends.

Yeah, Marshall definitely pulls off the best sounding mids. Vox is more for a clean tone. I've noticed a lot of heavier bands play Mesa Boogies, but not many pop-punk bands; it's more than likely due to the reason you stated.

Haha! It's funny that you mention TSA. My friend Ian was in that band for a little while, but he quit last year. When did they break up?

but yeah i spent a lot of my life in orange park haha, i lived in argyle for awhile, and then moved to fleming island, and then we moved into the orange park country club on blanding... im sure you're familiar with those areas haha. thats a pretty crazy coincidence. i stil go back and visit friends a couple times a year.

the 900 will probably win this poll because they are cheap on the used market, but, the vox ac-30 is the best amp of all time, period. It takes to pedals beautifully and is SO easy to get great tone from in the studio.
