This is kinda a silly question. 1st, most the people on this site can't accurately rate the 60's, 70's or 80's. Context is very important with music. It just seems like another what's your favorite album question. Most people on this site are into Brand New or Blink 182. Not saying that's bad, but it doesn't take a trained sociologist or a question to figure that out.
No doubt, access to music has changed in the past decade. I think we can all agree that the 00's have been great for music, because eclecticism has become the name of the game. You can find anything online nowadays to suit your interests. The internet, in a sense, has become a musical mirror for self-discovery.

Alright... wow. I regularly check this website but have never registered because I didn't care to post anything. But this has outraged me. I would highly reccomend some of the voters that submitted their votes for the modern eras such as the 90s and 00s listen to some of the following. Fleetwood Mac, The Grateful Dead, THE BEATLES (They aren't still the biggest band in the world 30 years after they broke up for no reason), Neil Young, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Simon and Garfunkel, Pink Floyd, Queen, Tom Petty, The Who, and many more classic rock type bands. Not only can these artists successfully perform their recorded songs live without butchering them onstage, (unlike many modern bands) The level of musicianship was much, much, much, much better (They didn't have Protools and auto-tune to fix all the shit they sucked at). Also, the artists I before mentioned song's actually had MEANING, and weren't primarily about breaking up with their girlfriends or how she's a bitch now or whatever. Not to say that all modern bands are like this. Anyway, I'm not trying to be rude towards anyone who isn't a fan of the 60s and 70s or knock modern music. I am a fan of many, many modern bands, and I understand everyone is entitled to their own opinion but I only hope some people may reconsider their musical respect for certain eras.

I really am offended by this, sorry. I personally hate the stereotype that young people have poor taste in music. I have listened to many artists from decades before my time and I just don't really like their music. I'm not talking about liking Lil' Wayne, or anything like that. I'm talking about listening to legitimate bands like Death Cab For Cutie, Bright Eyes, Modest Mouse, and modern Radiohead. As time progresses, so does music, and I'm a fan of the good music being produced in the current decade because it's something different. Music from the 60's and 70's has grown so redundant, really. The oldest band that I really listen to is the Smiths, because they were actually good.

I judge simply based upon the way things sound at first, and if I don't like the way something sounds, I don't really want to understand why it sounds that away. I'm fully aware I'm in the minority on this situation, but I really don't get the hype following the Beatles.

and I don't need to. I definitely respect them for what they were, but that has absolutely nothing to do with the way their music sounds. Lennon: amazing man, and it really is a shame that he had to die. McCartney is great, too, but just because I can respect people for who they are and what they strive to achieve doesn't mean that I respect every single move they make. I like the Beatles much more as people than I do as musicians.

Along the lines of creativity, I would say yes. I would say that they are undoubtedly one of the most creative bands of all time. Incredible musicians is pushing it. They could play their instruments well, but I don't think that classifies as being an 'Incredible Musician." I do love their vocals, though. Very peaceful, and one of the reasons I find some of their songs great.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Incredible musicians is pushing it? No, no, no, no, no. Listen to "rock" music before the Beatle's revolutionized it. Let me just put it this way, They're the biggest band in the world today. They had the most projected record/album/single sales for 2009. They broke up in 1970. Again, biggest band in the world TODAY. Broke up 39 years ago. I was about to explain a whole lot of other credible reasons why the Beatles are the greatest band in the world (I know I should say arguably the best, but if it was argued there is just too much that says they are.) but, you should really just go watch some videos of girls fainting when they see The Beatles and policemen having to cart their bodies off.
Anyway dude, by all means you don't have to like The Beatles, but you can't say they weren't one of the greatest/influential bands of all time. That is a fact.

there is no way I am denying their influence. The Beatles are unquestionably one of the most influential bands of all time.
But if you're honestly using fan reactions as a backbone to your story, then Nickelback may as well be considered the greatest band in the world.

As much as I hate to say it, Nickelback WILL probably go down as being huge in rock history. They have a ton of hits, I don't even know how many platinum singles they have. I mean I fucking hate them, but I can't say they aren't good. Chad Kroger's(sp?) lyrics are terrible. He seems like the biggest douche ever, but he has a talent for writing catchy songs, even though he puts the lamest lyrics in them. It's really all about the numbers though, Nickelback fans tend to be from a demographic of 25-50 year old listeners, who actually buy albums and don't pirate everything they listen to. So Nickelback is going to get bigger sales numbers, getting them more publicity, and money for promotion, making them a huge band. There's really only 2 ways to go down in rock history as being a great, monumental band. That's with the amount of sales your band makes, or the amount of people you can bring to a show. Sad to say Nickelback is well on their way. Though, I'd say in atleast 95% of cases, the album sales spark the large audience numbers for live performances, because you need money to promote your live performances (and who comes to your shows that doesn't know your songs?), and a great way to do that is having an album or single go platinum and get that huge bonus from your record label (or just sell alot). Anyway, once again, I hate Nickelback, but I can't say they aren't good. If I were to argue with someone that they were a bad band I would get slaughtered. Whomever I were arguing with would simply say; How many platinum albums/singles does Nickelback have? How can they be a bad band if that many people like them?

PS.. just because you sell a lot of records and have a bunch of hits does not make you good by default. Look at Britney Spears.
