View Full Version : Oscar Petition for Sam Rockwell in Moon

If you haven't seen the film Moon directed by David Bowies son Duncan Jones then you are missing out greatly on one of the best sci-fi movies to have come out in the last five years. This is a film that is deliberate, patient, and doesn't rush to the point just to cater to its audience. Think 2001: A Space Odyssey's quiet and beautiful look and feel mixed with the paranoia of a movie relative to The Shining.
Duncan Jones has created a grassroots campaign to get Rockwell an Oscar nomination. While I personally think there are better lead performances this year, I do think that Rockwell should be in the running. Head over the the petition and sign up.

Willem Defoe for Antichrist.
and my favorite performance so far this year....
Jeremy Renner for The Hurt Locker.
I was more in love with that film than any other this season. (following closely would be Star Trek, District 9, Drag me to Hell, Bright Star, An Education, and A new horror flick called The House of the Devil.
However, we still have Viggo Mortensen in The Road, Morgan Freeman in a Clint Eastwood directed film called Invictus, Mark Wahlberg for The Lovely Bones, and my most anticipated; Daniel Day-Lewis in NINE.
This is gonna be good.

I dont know if Norm's dry humor would do well on itself on late night television, but Jimmy Fallon should be replaced nonetheless.
To get back on topic: I still need to see this movie. Rockwell is so underrated in my opinion.

yeah a ton of great performances. i didn't see antichrist yet but hurt locket is def amazing. i don't see wahlberg being better then rockwell in this situation. just the fact that he's acting as two people against himself. danie lday lewis - that guy is always amazing.

I don't necessarily think that Wahlberg will be better than any of these actors, but I do think that he has it in him to deliver very rich performances. I also might have forgotten to mention George Clooney in Up in the Air from the director of JUNO. I didn't love JUNO but he is a very watched director now that the academy has really liked his first two films. We'll see.

Cue: You don't know anything about horror, it's Raimi's return to the genre, you just don't understand the humor, blahblahblah. Movie sucked cock.

When did I claim to know something about horror? When in reality, I do actually know plenty about the genre, I'm not trying to offend anyone by simply being entertained by a movie. Sorry that you had a problem with that. I hope that you get a lot of future fulfillment out of belittling others for their opinions about movies.

I was mocking all the other people that have liked that movie. It is usually the responses I get when I say it sucked. Came off as an attack on you, wasn't exactly. Just personal frustration at the state of horror in the public's eye. I was brash, and for that I apologize.

I, personally, would only sign a petition for Rockwell if I thought he deserved to win. I like Sam Rockwell, don't get me wrong, but do I think this particular performance is worth an Oscar, especially against the superior performances I've seen this year? No. An Oscar nom shouldn't just be an empty gesture of 'recognition' for an actor.
Some people will probably say, "lol dude, its the oscars' and you're completely right. That's why I don't particularly feel strongly about this.

No problem, but judging by your close to 40,000 posts here I would say that you should know well and good what would be considered an attack. Just because a lot of people like something, that doesn't make it bad. Drag me to Hell is at 92% on Rottentomatoes.com. That is nearly impossible to do. So while you may think that it isn't a good representation of horror, you can't say it sucked, because technically it is one of the better films of the year so far.
Side note. Have you seen the film Martyrs? It deals in some very very very dark subject matter. It's not only harshly psychological, but very very disturbing. I suggest a rent if you haven't seen it. Also, watch the introduction. It's one of the more surprisingly disturbing movies I've seen in the last 10 years. Having just seen Cannibal Holocaust and Salo for the first time as well this year also.
Anyway. If you really don't like something, try pointing out the reasons you don't like it instead of saying it sucks cock. You will have much more engaging conversations that way, and in fact, might be able to change some of the publics ideas that you seem to despise so much on good horror flicks. Just sayin'

There isn't a horror flick that I watch where flashes of Martyrs don't pop back into my head. I actually just recommended it to someone on here a bit ago, because ever since I saw it last year it has been one of the films I rec. when people tell me that horror sucks and nothing scares them anymore, because that film is, honest to God, scarring. It is the most exhausting, emotional, brutal, disturbing horror movie I've seen this decade. By about 10 minutes into her beatingsI was more than ready for the movie to end, but they did it for at least another 15-20 minutes, systematically, and then to watch it come full circle with the skinning. Ugh. I absolutely adored the message that they were giving by the term "martyr" -- and the execution was something 2000's American horror directors could only ever dream in their wildest nightmares. When it was over, I needed to cry, take a shower, hug someone, tell my mom I loved her, etc. It was a ride man, and one I vowed I'd never take again, hahah.
Rockwell is amazing. He deserves it for sure.

And I'm glad you recognize how awesome Nine is going to be; this year is going to be tough for Oscars.

No need to be jealous. I see you like Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Have you seen The Lookout? It's one of my favorites of his. Also, over at apple trailers there is a sweet trailer for a new movie he is in called Uncertainty. Then of course there is Inception. That kid is all over the place. He's one of my favorite rising stars. Very close to Gosling for me.
