So, as I'm sure you've all heard by now, Taylor Hicks, the 50 year old-looking dude from Alabama, won American Idol. Thoughts?

i think its cool because i would much rather see america embrace a blues rocker who plays a mean harmonica than another kelly clarkson with another generic single. this guy is going to offer something new to the mainstream music table, and hopefully open up a raw rock explosion.

I think Taylor was a better performer than the chick, but I think the chick had a better voice and a much much much better look (she was hot as hell). I think Taylor belongs on Broadway because he's not an amazing vocalist at all but knows how to entertain a crowd... either that, or they should put him on one of those kid sing-a-long shows.

From the bits of the show i've seen (I watched the Tribute to Queen show saw some of another episode) the bald rocker-guy named Chris was by far the best contestant on the show.

Sure, he'll be offering it, but offering means nothing if mainstream isn't going to enjoy it, and I don't think they will. The only reason mainstream has accepted him so far is because he hasn't been singing his own songs or representing his own style...as soon as he does I think he'll flop.

Clay Aiken (who came in second a few years ago) and Carrie Underwood (who won last year) both went multi-platinum. To my knowledge Fantasia, Rueben Studdard and all of the other second place finishers besides Clay have gone no where. I think the chick that came in second this year will actually do really well.

from the few episodes i have watched, he has kept it really true to the loud, harmonica-blowin blues rocker he seems to be. i mean, i dont think everyone will like it but it will definatly be an excellant way for a lot of people who would have never thought they liked rock or blues to be exposed to it, which is just great. its kind of like how when i was younger i used to say "i hate country" (just like every other kid i knew), but then i started listening to bands in the punk scene playing pseudo country/folk/whathaveyou like limbeck and elliott smith, which translated into me now being open to country artists and appeciating an entire genre. dig?

Last years winner, Carrie Underwood, went triple platinum faster than any other female singer's debut in history and she is also the fastest selling country artist to date. She also won 2 CMT awards, and her single was #1 on the country charts for 6 weeks straight.

daughtry should've won the whole thing, but he's going to make it bigger than idol would ever make him. still happy about taylor though.
oh, and for the record, fantasia just got done doing a tour with kanye west. i agree no one has gone as far as kelly, but i think it's because kelly's music appeals to a good majority of the world you know? like carrie underwood is only going to attract country, fantasia is more r&b, etc...
may seem lame, but i can idol talk for hours.

Yeah, but I think it's different with him. It's different because I think he won strictly because he's a good performer and not because he's a good singer/like-able style. Unless his album comes up with a dancing blow up doll, I don't think the mainstream will accept it. Also, you have to keep in mind, American Idol hires writers to write a majority of the winners' songs. When the contestants sign up to be on the show, they have to agree to allow American Idol to write some of the songs and have a say on which songs become hits, etc...so he may end up as a pop artist afterall. Last year's runner up actually tried to sue the show because he didn't like the single they picked and refused to perform it live.

If American Idol wants to make a ton of money they should put a nude picture of Kathryn Mcphee on the insert of her album. I'd sure as hell buy it.

The damn show is called American Idol. People are supposed to want to idolize the person who wins. there is not one person on this earth that is idolizing this guy. With the exception of other nerds. this has nothing to do with taylor hicks.
but on the last american idol.. when that wannabe clay aiken kid came out to sing.
and clay aiken actually walked out behind him and started singing and the kid freaking out.
that was funny, the kids reaction was priceless.
then when they were singing they hella turned down his mic.
it was pretty sweet for that kid though.

Stuff like this actually really interests me. I like seeing who wins because I like trying to evaluate and predict where music will be in the coming years. I watch all the award shows, listen to the radio and watch MTV/TRL to try and see what artists kids are currently into and to see if I can take make an accurate prediction as to what styles of music will become popular as time goes on.

i'm sure hes a nice guy and all...humble, whatever. but i really hated him as a contestant. i have wanted him off the show for weeks now. if you want to read more of my thoughts on it, i've posted quite a few times in the american idol thread.
basically: he has no vocal talent. i won't want to hear him on the radio, on a cd, whatever. his dancing annoys me. it looks like seizure-like, sporadic jiving. give me a break. i guess what america wants these days is a non-serious, happy go lucky kind of guy. not someone who will bring on the real talent.

all of the american idol choices have sucked since kelly clarkson. i'd rather watch william hung slaughter his way through an entire album than this gray haired douche struggle through yet another shitty elvis song.
From the bits of the show i've seen (I watched the Tribute to Queen show saw some of another episode) the bald rocker-guy named Chris was by far the best contestant on the show.
He's been offered the lead singer position in Fuel, as soon as their contract with the current singer runs out or something like that. Gotta suck to be the current singer and know you're getting fired for some TV reality show singer.

i agree to an extent...he is a bit different, and brings some different to the table, but did you hear his single? Its aweful, and sounds like just about every other song out there. Im glad Chris didnt win, he was by far the best, but if he would have won, he would have been stuck to the shitty contract/doing whatever the label wanted him to do. Now he can at least make a decision as to what he wants to do bandwise.

Fuel's singer actually quit a bit ago, because his voice is shot and he's unable to sing. He's playing guitar for another band now, the name of which is escaping me. I think now that Idol is over, the wheels are going to start turning on this, and he can look forward to an exciting career of playing state fairs and half empty clubs.

the ridiculous part is there was more votes for american idol then the last presidential election, I know people can vote more than once for this and people under 18 can vote, but the fact that 61 million votes for "american your name in the limelight for two years" is more than any presidential election is horrifying... I dont know the exact census numbers, but I sure as hell know there are more than 61 million citizens of this country older than 18

i agree 100 percent! i was always afraid he was having some sort of medical problem on stage...i don't know how people enjoyed that and thought that it was good. all he did was talk the songs and throw in some high notes, anyone could do that, it is no talent at all. katherine on the other hand had a beautiful voice and could sing many different styles (instead of taylor's sole style) even though it seemed like her favorite was ballad. i think she really lost out because they picked a horrible single for her, but then again, i don't see how taylor's was good either. i'm very upset about this whole thing lol

this is the first season of idol i've watched. i liked chris a lot when it started, but all his shit sounded the same, and he got cocky and he hadn't even made it to the top two yet. he had to go. katherine might be hot, but she really doesn't sing all that well if you watched the whole season - always off key and messing shit up. taylor may look different but he's really fun to watch, and he never butchered a song that he sang. i'm glad he won. though i still think that there's gonna be some sort of investigation that finds he's not really 29, lol.

I like Katharine McPhee a lot, but I am honestly surprised she got as far as she did. She was biffing a lot of notes throughout... although I do have to say, her rendition of "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" was gorgeous. I like Taylor Hicks a lot, and I definitely think he deserved to win, but I agree that it is going to be really hard to market him to the general public. I listen to a lot of light rock radio, and I can see him fitting in with musicians such as Don Henley or Steve Winwood, but I really don't know if that sells anymore.
I am just happy that Elliott got booted, he had no soul in his voice and looked like a hamster.

I think Taylor should have been off long ago. The race should have been between Katherine and Chris and Chris being the winner. Those two were far and above the best contestants for this competition. Katherine was gorgeous but she had horrible performance skills and stage presence. It was painful. But she could sing the hell out of songs. As for Taylor, I agree, i do not know how you can sell a guy like him. His PR person is probably committing suicide this very second.

i don't understand the comments about the contestants missing notes and being off key etc. do you really think 61 million americans know what it sounds like to miss one or two notes or to be off key for a few seconds? i mean, they really probably don't know diddly squat about the technical side of singing. personally, after watching a few shows, you can tell if someone is off, but only when they are REALLY off, not if it's a note here and there, but if they are constantly off, or they just lose it going for a high note. but after the viewers take over the voting it really doesn't fucking matter how technically good their singing is.

yeah i agree with this guy. i think its totally why i watch it time after time. i am interested to see what society is into, however off or not they are. its really interesting watching millions of people consistently vote for unmarketable mediocre singers. i mean.. maybe this is why the industry is the way it is, look who is buying and supporting it! an audience more content with sporadic jiving than any hint of good singing talent.

Kat started to become an arrogant diva by the end of the show. She's been a trained singer her entire life. This show is about un-found, raw talent. You need to have a likeable, fun personality to win this competition, and this year that was Taylor Hicks. Kat probably has the better voice, but she's similiar to so many previous contestants, and other girls on the radio. He was voted because he is different than any other person that has come on the show. I'm happy with how the show turned out. Kat will be fine without the help of American Idol, but Taylor needs and deserved it. Wow I sound like Simon.

From the bits of the show i've seen (I watched the Tribute to Queen show saw some of another episode) the bald rocker-guy named Chris was by far the best contestant on the show.
A couple days after he was voted off, he was offered the lead singing job for Fuel. I think he's going to turn it down though and start his own band. He said he had about a dozen songs of his own. He has an old band, but I'm not sure if he'll be staying with them. My point though is that Chris will probably be the one you see doing the most out of this year's American Idol contestants. He's going to be pretty big I think.

i only saw part of one episode and that old dude wouldn't stop chanting "soul patrol". so i changed the channel. what the heck is soul patrol anyways?
A lot of you seem to forget that there are people in the country older than you who buy records. To most of music's youngest market, Taylor Hicks's sound isn't all that marketable, but to people who are older - or anyone at all - who grew up on soul, blues, and classic rock, he's a breath of fresh air. There's a reason that all the songs he sang this year were deemed well-known enough to perform on the show: people like them, and people like the same style of music that Taylor likes. He might not have the technical prowess that comes from years of vocal lessons, but he's a raw, lively voice and personality who now has the exposure necessary to revitalize a genre that's been shunted to the oldies stations. "Idol" will try to make him sing a generic pop song for his first single, but the label isn't stupid - they know his image and his talents, and they know how to sell him.
Much of the mainstream finds Carrie Underwood sickening (just the title of the song "Jesus Take the Wheel" makes me uncomfortable), but there's also a large market out there for what she does. The same goes for Taylor. He's gimmicky, but he's also lucky enough to have a great voice. If you gave the songs he sang to Kat, she'd hit the notes even more consistently and maybe add some runs and showy bits as well, but she couldn't bring the grit and soul Taylor did - that's what makes him a good singer, not his range.

i think its cool because i would much rather see america embrace a blues rocker who plays a mean harmonica than another kelly clarkson with another generic single. this guy is going to offer something new to the mainstream music table, and hopefully open up a raw rock explosion.
joe.
my thoughts exactly, and maybe bo will go back to his band to write GOOD music instead of releasing shitty pop songs

a gray and unattractive American Idol is an oxymoron.

i guess what america wants these days is a non-serious, happy go lucky kind of guy.
Yet... hellogoodbye has a lot of fans. What's wrong with wanting to have fun and just being a happy performer?

I don't like American Idol. For 18 weeks or so, they take a nobody and make them a somebody who gets a record deal, etc. etc.
However, there are some bands out there that have been around of much much longer, and though they are damn good, they'll never get noticed, which to think of it, is either bad or good.

No she didn't.
You could tell by her reactions the last few weeks when the judges said how she didn't do well. She had the "oh I know I'm good, and don't need your advice" attitude.

He's going to be pretty big I think.
did he ever actually get offered the job? i thought they just talked it over. this is what carl from fuel said:
All right. Check it out. Here's the deal.
Normally, obviously, we would never even think about anyone from Am Idol as a singer for Fuel. However, ever since Chris sang Hemorrhage on the show, we began paying attention. Sorry, the show's not my thing, but at least most of the finalist can sing and aren't Britney Spearing it up there. However, Chris in my opinion has carried himself well on the show and has stayed true to his rock side, which is a serious credit to him considering the format. We have found some great guys through the audition process and in fact, were already headed in other directions when Chris unexpectedly got voted off the show. The phones started ringing. So now what? I think anyone would say that we would at least have to entertain the idea of Chris and Fuel. The websites have been flooded with support for the idea ever since he sang Hemorrhage from most of you. So that is what we are doing. We are entertaining the idea and the offer to Chris was that we would be willing to entertain him as an option. However, there is a lot to discuss and be decided. Is it right for us? Would it be the right thing for Chris? Would he even be able to get out of the contractual obligations to Am Idol? Would we be able to get things squared with Sony? So nothing is cut and dry, even if both camps thought it was right thing to do, it still might be impossible to work out all the details. Chris and I have discussed the possibility before and we are still entertaining the idea. Either way, never fear, we are coming with a great lead singer very soon who we are very excited about and rolling out a record this year.
