Going to be some sort of HS teacher. My degree would let me do anything from Journalism to History or English.
I started subbing this year, and absolutely love it.

Why? It's great and all that you want to be able to educate multiple subjects, but in the end you'll just get hired for one of the subjects, most certainly mathematics over English.
Mathematics/Secondary education here.
love the idea myself- dbl major in english/EE.

there's always a possibility i can be hired for both. and that would make me more appealing.
I would be interested in teaching an English class or something in that style if my plans for the future fell through.

That's true. If you're set on be able to teach multiple subjects, if you didn't know, you don't necessarily have to major in a subject to become certified (at least that's how it is in pennsylvania). You essentially just need a bachelor's degree in anything, and need to be able to pass the Praxis exam of your subject of choice. Of course, who is to say you'll actually get hired that way (ie. If you have a bachelors degree in Writing, and are capable of passing the English Praxis exam.)
In relation with what you're planning:
If you major in Mathematics Secondary Education, you can completely get away with a minor in English, and still be highly capable of passing your Praxis exams for both. It'll be a lot less work seeing that a B.S.Ed. in Mathematics is highly time consuming. When the time comes, talk to your adviser.
Just trying to make you aware of other options!

I'm a first year math teacher; I went to school for both math and English education. I'd much rather be teaching English (I feel like I can come up with way better lessons, do more fun things, and so on) but the math job was open so I took it. There are some days I love my job, and others that make me want to completely give up. But I guess the beauty of it lies in the fact that each day is something different--I'd be bored to death at a "regular" 9-5.

i majored in Education for my undergrad degree so i could become an elementary school teacher but never went through with teaching when i got out. Now, years later, i'm back to wanting to be a teacher - but this time for high school. I am going to go back and get my Master's degree soon along with my teaching certification so i can go in making a little bit more money than a beginning teacher typically makes. I plan on doing two subjects, Home Ec. and Health, to be better utilized in school.

I switched from business to education, thinking I wasn't a material person so I wouldn't need a higher salary. Now I have bills, rent (which is really high in a college town), and a wedding to save for, among other things, and I'm making <$30k. It's not that I need material things, but I'd like to have a bit of a cushion, be able to start saving for my kids' college, a house, be able to donate to charities, etc. The trade-off is that I have incredible benefits and an incredible retirement plan, but that doesn't help me starting out when a large percentage of the aforementioned salary is being apportioned into those funds.

i'm an Elementary Education major. ideally i want to teach anywhere between third and fifth grade, or work as a reading specialist. in this job market, however, i will be lucky if i secure a teaching job as soon as i graduate. hopefully i can get a job and work on getting my masters at the same time. i'm really passionate about teaching and none of the career paths i ever considered taking would have made me much money anyway. it's a good fit for me, but it's definitely not for everyone.

I've highly considered it. Specifically, elementary education, if only because I love being around kids and I like everything, and it'd be nice to be able to teach/do multiple subjects in different fields. I've had a few of my teachers tell me I should be a teacher, but I don't know. I'm still patient with people when they're young, hah.
Right now, I'm majoring in biomedical engineering. Besides these things, I was also considering actuarial sciences (actuary/insurance type stuff), astronomy, creative writing, and photography. In an ideal world, I'd like to be able to teach during the school year and do BME stuff/research during the summers, but that's not something I see happening very easily. I figure if I'm BME, I can pursue my interests there and research and whatnot, and I can have children of my own to be around and teach (though I know it's not the same), whereas if I go the teacher route, I probably won't have any opportunities to do research. We'll see what happens.

i love my fcs courses...i'm pretty much finished with all of my fcs classes, now most of my classes are all education. but i was always interested in most of them, some of them would be pretty dry, but the cooking and sewing ones were always a good time. as far as EIU goes, charleston is in the middle of NOWHERE. we have a super wal-mart and that's about it...you're about 45 minutes away from champaign which has everything. but the campus is nice, it isn't too big which is why i love it. you could walk anywhere in less than 15 minutes. but i haven't heard anything bad about our grad program...i would definitely recommend checking it out.
keep me posted on what you find for grad programs, i would like to go to grad school sometime soon, and i wasn't really sure what schools have good fcs grad programs.

I'm currently studying for a BSEd in Mathematics. I'm very excited to finish my degree and begin my profession. I still have two more years though.
I read an article 'written' by Michelle Obama, where in the next five years, there will be approximately one million teaching positions that will need to be filled due to the baby boomer generation of teachers retiring. Good news for job security.
The article also stated that appreciation should be shown to teachers by having an increase in salary, since teachers have "one of the most significant careers in the United States."

I am currently in my last semester of my History major/Education minor and doing a TA at a local high school. Completely changed what I thought a teacher would be and would have to deal with, and it is easy to say in my experience, none of the classes I took prepared me for what I was going to go through. Definately an interesting field, and the more time I spend there the more I can see myself doing it for a long time.

i'm an Elementary Education major.
I did not know this! :-)

I'm very passionate about government and American history and would love to get kids excited about them. Check.

Exactly.
To be a sadistic cow and make people's lives a living hell as some sort of revenge = my instructor right now.
Hahaha I knew high school teachers like that. That's why I want to become one - half of the teachers I had in high school were garbage.
I've been thinking of becoming a teacher more and more lately. I don't know why, but out of nowhere.
That's kind of how it was for me. I came up with the idea about a year ago, and high school came to mind immediately, and I could not find any logic behind that. My parents tried to talk me into Elementary Ed, because it's "easier". But my passion for teaching lies in teaching older kids about the government (since my BA is in Political Science) than for teaching first graders the color wheel. But it's different for everybody - my passion is just that older age group (as terrifying and intimidating as it kind of seems right now).
Looking into getting my teaching certificate. We'll see how it goes. As anxious as it makes me, and as I fear the worst, I think I want to do this. I'm lucky that one of my old high school teachers is willing to give me advice and guidance as I go through the process. He also happens to be one of the best teachers I've ever had, certainly an example I want to use as the kind of teacher I want to be.

That's unfortunate. My dad was the one who actually suggested teaching for me, but when he asked who I wanted to teach (and I said High School), he told me I should teach little kids because "they still love their teachers and love learning". So I took the exam last year but I never applied to the Early Childhood program. My heart wasn't in it. For a year I let their words prevent me from pursuing it, but I'm not going to let what they say deter me. I am going into a program in August to be able to teach High School Social Studies and I am very happy about it!

Extremely competitive career, and there are way many more individuals with this degree than there are positions. If this is something you're very passionate about doing, you need to make sure you are involved with as many activities as you can that apply to your degree, and will then make you stand out from the others. Usually elementary and special education double major is the best option for those who want to teach "little" kids.
Not putting down your choice, just making you aware!

Thanks for the advice :)
Teaching was the original plan. Then I didn't get into the 5 year masters program at my school and instead of transferring I stayed. Got a degree in psychology but I don't know what I'm going to do with that. Thinking of going back to school for another year or taking night/summer classes and finishing another major and then doing the teacher certification stuff. Maybe high school history.

I had been a teacher for 3 months. It is wonderful!I love my students, they are so cute.
I hope English is not your first language(like someone said before) and you are teaching elementary students. If you're a high school teacher, you're gonna get in trouble.
Lately I've been thinking of being a history teacher, because my World History teacher was ****ing awesome and influential(despite a lot of people hating him for giving a lot of work...it's high school, you should be glad you have three days for 45 definitions), and History is my best subject.
What would be the best path to take in college? Like, what to major/minor in?

Undergraduate Education Programs are a joke. This really isn't a secret. If you want to get into a grad program, you really want to have a primary degree in something else (minor in ed, so you don't have to go through an alt. cert., if you do want to teach). Major in the subject you want to teach. It's not particularly a secret, but Undergrad Ed. programs are cash cows for Universities. They take very little to maintain and churn out what they've got.
I'm a full-time M.S. English teacher and in a top 10 Ed Policy Program.

Like the person below you said, don't major in Education. If you want to teach History, definitely major in that, then! And maybe minor in Education. I majored in Poli Sci, but didn't minor in Educaiton. Starting this summer I'm going for my teacher certification at UWM. All I need to take are some history credits (because I want to be certified in History, too) and the 36 teaching credits (+ the semester of student teaching).

Well, you could accept a job as a high school band director. Between the music theory, composition, technology, the school band, maybe even the choir, jazz band, pit band, etc, etc, etc. I think those who would be in those classes/activities would know they wouldn't be learning Dream Theatre riffs.

Unless you want to teach Sped for the rest of your teaching career, totally noble if you do, get rid of that distinction. Make it a certification you can hide if you would like to teach a different population of students. Schools are notorious for burning out their sped and ELL/ESL teachers by drowning them with case files and not hiring an adequate number of staff in those areas. Again, major in something other than education, it will hold you back like nothing could if you ever want to do something else.

Completely agree. Just major in some subject you're interested in teaching.
Also make sure before you decide on education you do some sort of internship with teaching. I did and it made me completely change my mind: forever.

Finished student teaching in May, and I'm about a month and a half into my first teaching position as a 7th Grade Social Studies teacher. I student taught 11th and 12th grade, so 7th grade is a bit of a change, but it's a blast. Kind of like any other job, some days are amazing, some make you wonder why you are doing what you're doing. The former heavily outweigh the latter though.
I moved from Washington down to Arizona as the job market in Washington is terrible, and even more so for Social Studies. With the rush of moving down here 10 days after my phone interview, and the first day of school two weeks after that, my preparation time was fairly limited. In some ways I still feel as if it's a continuation of my student teaching, but it seems like that is fairly common in the first few years of teaching regardless of the situation. Some days I feel like I'm an excellent teacher, other days I feel like I'm doing the kids a disservice by me being there. Despite this, I really can't see myself doing anything different. Actually being able to see these kids change on a daily basis because of the impact you have on them is pretty incredible.
If anyone has any questions, particularly Social Studies endorsement/curriculum type stuff, let me know!

I got my bachelor's degree in History, then did a 1 year Masters In Teaching program. I would recommend getting a degree in something you'd want to teach (History, English, Science, etc) then adding on an extra year for a Master's degree. Schools usually like seeing a degree devoted to your content area, and being on the MA pay scale is nice too.

You are the very first person I have ever seen suggest any kind of masters program before getting a job. Every Prof., Teacher, and lecturer has told me to get my degree and TRY to find a job. They want to know that you can handle a classroom before they are willing to pay you extra. Also, most schools will pay for you to advance schooling once you get the job.

In my experience all that you need in order to be placed on the MA pay scale is a degree bearing certificate that says you have obtained a Master's Degree. It's all contractual and not based on any kind of classroom assessment. The Master's programs I'm talking about are Education programs, so once you've completed that you'll have the exact same proof that you can handle a classroom as any education undergrad would. Plus the argument could be made that waiting that extra year after completing your undergrad to earn a master's degree instead of trying to find a job/subbing could be more valuable in the long run, as the job market for teacher's over the next few years can only really improve from where it is right now.
It could be regional, but with all of the financial issues in education and bonds/overrides not passing nowadays, it would seem doubtful that most schools would be willing to pay anything to further the education of their teachers. Don't get me wrong, it would be fantastic, but I'm more concerned with my district having enough money to keep a separate 7th grade and 8th grade Social Studies teacher at my school than having them pay for me to get my PhD. As it is right now my district has to pass an override in November to not lose counseling services, intervention programs, and music/art/PE programs. It sucks, but it's the reality of how education is run in this country.
Of course, this could all be the ramblings of someone who has to deal with four classes of 7th graders in the morning and stopping them from throwing stuff at each other all day long.

The pay rate for Master's really depends on the school district. In the Dallas School district one would get about $3,000 dollars more a year for having a Master's, something I really don't think is to big of a difference.Perhaps this is because I would get an $2,000 bonus for being fluent in Spanish. I myself will graduate with degrees in History and Spanish and the plan is to test out of the content areas for Spanish and bilingual education on top of History, which is what I am getting certified in now.

I'm a high school history teacher. Last year was my first year. It was brutal. If you can survive those first couple years, you can survive anything. Right now I'm finishing up some coursework right now to be certified in PE. I'm also an assistant basketball coach and hope to be a head coach as I teach history or pe (I'm certified in geography as well).
As far as advice to aspring teachers, get as many endorsements as you can. Jobs are hard to come by, and you might have to teach something you don't like as much as something else to get your foot in the door. Show them you're dedicated and you'll be able to move in to the positions you want most.
Also, willingness to coach or get involved in extracurricular activities is basically a must if you want to teach in high school, and junior highs to an extent. Just be versatile and willing!

I'm pretty confident that even with the shitty job market, I'll be able to find a job in a decent amount of time once I get my Bachelor's. I'm going to get my Master's as a Literacy Specialist, and be certified with a minor in Coaching as well when I get out.
All I have to do is keep my good grades (3.86), be a good interview, and have good ideas for the classroom. Confidence is key.

Hm, it's tough to say. I had sort of a love-hate situation with both. Maybe high school, though.
Right now I'm leaning more towards Secondary, but I keep flipping back and forth. I tutor second graders a few times a week and I really enjoy it, but I've always kind of wanted to be a high school English teacher. I'll decide soon, haha.

It was a lot easier than I thought. Not taking math for a year was a little bit of a hurt, but overall I think I did really good.

If I was ever a teacher, It would be for a really high level of Mathematics, or Science. I would want to be able to teach my students the Golden Ratio, the Fibonacci Sequence, and what 1.61803 means.
I'm still debating on whether or not I want to do secondary education or something like elementary, I really don't know, I think both have their pros and cons. But I need to figure out soon, for sure.
After working at a summer camp with little kids, I kind of lean towards elementary, but still, really having a hard time choosing one.

I would just go to a school in the state you want to teach in. Most schools have a program that you finish and are certified to teach in that state. Sometimes certification is easy to transfer between states and other times it's not.

I definitely want to teach band at high school level. Being a band director would kick ass! I already have music I arranged for marching band that my band director right noowww doesn't want to see. He's more classical, I'm more "lets play punk rock on the field instead of stuff nobody can jam to" but I digress.
Also, I want to certify in American History, in case nobody wants to hire a band director, teaching History would be an ideal job!

I worked at the same place all through college and then once I graduated, I got a similar job somewhere else. I looked for something in my field but I wasn't really able to find anything, so, yeah, I guess it was kind of hard to find a job as a math major. Student Teaching was easily one of the best experiences of my life. My teacher was cool and eased me in, but once I had control.... the class was mine. He was almost never in the class with me. It felt real and the students were just awesome. Only two or three of them ever really gave me trouble. It was hard to leave, and subbing this last spring semester didn't compare (although, it was nice to be paid).

You can't be half committed if you're thinking of going in to teaching. You won't make it as a teacher. It really has to be your life's work. You can't think of it as something to fall back on. You will be a crappy teacher and you will hate it. I think with teaching, it has to be the only career you can see yourself wanting to go in to. Again, if you're not like that you will hate it and be horrible at doing it.
