they'd obviously win central. and if you go by their record, sure you're right. i'm speaking as if they had played in the division the entire year. and i am fairly confident that in both the AL west and east, the phillies are one of the few teams that would in fact be able to be competitive.

Such a dumb argument. If they were in the AL, they would have also built their team differently.
Who knows how the Yankees would be in the NL without a DH every time. What the fuck is the difference?
Every sports writer has said the Phillies are the NL team most built like an AL team.
Killadelphia
10/26/09, 04:13 AM
The interesting thing about this series with the starting pitching is that for the most part, both teams have a familiarity outside of interleague play.
C.C, Burnett, Andy have all pitched in the NL.
Lee, Blanton, Pedro have all pitched in the AL.
When it comes to offense, the Phillies have by far been the hotter of the two offenses this postseason. It'll be interesting to see if it can carry over. While we have to face C.C. in game 1, I prefer not seeing Andy until game 3 at home. Him pitching in NY is a loss for the opposing team most of the time.
Like someone said earlier, it really depends on Hamels, and to be honest, I do not see him being successful. He's such a headcase.
The series could easily go either way.

You're kidding right? You can't really think the phillies wouldn't be in the playoffs if they were in the AL, that's just a ridiculous statement. The Yankees and the Phillies are the top power hitting teams, who can play small ball, who have solid pitching.

based on what? the Yankees have a better offense, the starting pitching is comparable, and the Yankees have a better bullpen. the Phillies are really not the better team significantly in any one aspect of the game
I think the Phillies have a better offense.

The other night, when the Phillies clinched, at the diner down the street from me, someone came in and was causing a ruckus, and was promptly asked to name the starting lineup, couldn't, and was kicked out. Awesome.
But yeah, it was kind of offputting to see the over the top celebrating. I live in a major metropolitan area, and I can talk to maybe 3 people about things actually concerning baseball. But somehow, on clinching night, everyone's a fan. I write features freelance sometimes, and had to go out and get some quotes, and most of what I got was, "woo, baby, we did it again,' which leads me to believe that most of these people didn't even understand there was a world series to be played.
Anyway. Yeah, Phillies fans suck.

the Yankees scored 95 more runs than the Phillies
the Yankees hit .283 while the Phillies hit .258 (23rd in baseball)
Yankees OBP: .362. Phillies OBP: .334

Yeah, and pitchers hitting 2-3 times a game, bring numbers down.
Ibanez and Werth, top 10 in OPS in the majors. No Yankees until the next set of 10 and Damon hasn't exactly been killing it lately. Victorino is 27th.
You also have Rollins, who had an .801 OPS post the break. Jeter will always have the edge here.
You also have Ruiz who is probably one of the better 8 hitters in baseball.
You have Chase Utley who has reached base in 25 straight postseason games. Also, a better OPS than Cano.
Tex and Howard are virtually interchangeable. Howard slugs higher, but Tex hits for a little better average.
A-Rod is 10x better than Feliz. No argument for that.
In terms of the postseason, currently through 9 games, the Phillies have more runs, and a higher OPS.
Also, if you go through every spot in the order, the Phillies are hitting better more times than not.

gaudin hasn't pitched a significant amount of innings since his last start during the regular season save for a sole appearance in the post season. at this point there's NO WAY he could be effective; dude's gotta be the last man out of the bullpen.

i know what i said earlier in this thread about the phillies and the post season, but really it's incredible how evenly matched both teams are. it will be a great series.
i just hope the yankees decide to add hinske to the roster. considering we'll be playing 3 crucial games in an NL park, it will be nice to have the extra power bat off the bench. they could easily get rid of the extra pinch runner off the bench to add hinske and if they want to add the 12th pitcher (i assume that'd be bruney) they'd have to drop the 3rd catcher (which i highly doubt they'd do).

oh me too. i hope he drops his tendency to overmanage here. these games are too important to fuck around (though it was nice to see him going to rivera earlier in the game the other night). who would've thought - using your best reliever in the situation with the highest leverage?!
it's so easy to look at the splits of that 3-4-5 and see that howard has trouble with lefties and werth and ibanez have worse triple slash stats against righties. depending on the inning, he's better off doing what i suggested. also don't forget aceves has great success against lefties as well.
i think if that 3-4-5 comes up in, say, the 7th -- depending on how the starter has done -- go to aceves then hughes/rivera for the 8th/9th.

also:
Pitching coach Dave Eiland said the Yankees haven’t ruled out the idea of sticking with a three-man rotation in the World Series, a plan that would force all three starters to pitch on short rest. That said, Chad Gaudin is scheduled to throw a 70 to 80 pitch bullpen session this afternoon at Yankee Stadium.
“We’re going to stretch him out today, as best we can,” Eiland said.
The Yankees believe they can get Gaudin stretched out enough to throw 80 or 90 pitches. Eiland wouldn’t definitively say Gaudin would be the fourth starter — or that there would be a fourth starter — but he did say that Joba Chamberlain would only be able to go two or three innings at the most.
Stretching Guadin out today “probably” makes him unavailable in Games 1 and 2, Eiland said.

I guess you'll just have to see the path of destruction they put on your Phills and then we'll talk.
I'll be sure to quote you after they get worked.
Pretty sure NL Champ would still be a good finish.

No, that's something my mom would say.
Anyone that talks like that is crazy.
Why would any team be okay with 1st in the league but loser of the World Series?
You don't see any parades for AL/NL Champs...after loosing the WS...just saying.
I WOULD HATE TO LOOSE THE WORLD SERIES!

as soon as the phillies win im walking out of my house on broad street and marching to city hall. predicting phils in 6, but hoping for phils in 5 so they win at home. IM ALREADY LOOKIN AT THE THREEPEAT, MUHFUCKA. the overpaid, obnoxious, unsportsmanlike Hollywood yankees can eat a big back of dick.

You really shouldn't given the team has earned the right to be the most-polarizing MLB team. Plus it's not like Philadelphia fans are saints either.
