Great rec. with John Ralston Steve
Okay so this is what I have been spinning this week (I am in a summer mode and most of my choices will reflect that):
The Promise Ring - The album in reference is the legendary Nothing Feels Good. This is an album I listen to maybe three times tops throughout the year, but when summer and the warm weather arrives, it is permanently glued to my stereo. Standout Tracks: "Why Did We Ever Meet", "Forget Me", "Red & Blue Jeans", and "B Is For Bethlehem". It just isn't summer until you listen to this album.
Third Eye Blind - Their self-titled debut is an amazing release. Every single song on there is a winner, and I never get tired of listening to it. So many memories are attached to this album, and it took me quite a few years from when it first came out to pick this up. Blue is a great record as well, but I do not like it as much as the self-titled. This record was released back when not everything on the radio was garbage like it is today for the most part. Standout Tracks: "Narcolepsy", "Semi-Charmed Life" (obviously), "Graduate", "How's It Going To Be", "The Background".
Minus The Bear - This band has such a refreshing sound that is so far removed from the trends that have been gripping most indie music. Jake Snider is one of my favorite vocalists, and his smooth delivery gives a certain sophisticated air to the bands music. I think it is understood that Dave Knudson is an amazing guitarist, and Erin Tate, to me, is one of the most underrated drummers in the indie world. This band does not get the credit it deserved, and to date has not released one bad album. Menos El Oso and Highly Refined Pirates are their best albums, and if you are looking for laid back, chill out music that still has technical musicianship, Seattle's Minus The Bear is your new favorite band. Seriously, check this band out, if you can honestly say you don't like them, I will be shocked. Standout Tracks:"Monkey!!! Knife!!! Fight!!!", "Women We Haven't Met Yet", "This Ain't A Surfin' Movie", and "Let's Play Clowns".
Sunday's Best - Some critics blasted their record, The Californian as being too boring, but to me I just can't see it that way. The band endured many hardships throughout their career, but they stuck together through all those hard times and created an awesome feel-good album perfect for spring and summer. The Californian is a stripped down album that is void of any flashy theatrics, just energetic pop songs, and the occasional slow tempoed "ballad". This band barely had any exposure that I can remember, which is a darn shame since The Californian is a perfect album to have blasting on summer nights while driving on the open road with the windows down or to just have playing while hanging out with your friends poolside. I love this album, and I encourage people to pick this up if they are tired of flashy music devoid of substance and are looking for a simple, yet engaging pop record. Standout Tracks: "The Salt Mines Of Santa Monica", "If We Had It Made", "Los Feliz Arms", and "Beethoven St.".
Relient K - I only own two of the band's albums, MMHMM and The Anatomy Of The Tongue In Cheek, and my favorite by far is MMHMM. This album is overflowing with energy, and every time I have a bad day and need a quick pick-me up, I listen to this album on my MP3 player. MMHMM was a huge success for the band, and hopefully they can gain even more fans still. Also, the songs carry a positive message which is refreshing. I sing along to most of these songs throughout the day without even realizing it. More people need to listen to Relient K, seriously. I don't know of many people who hate MMHMM. Standout Tracks: "My Girls Ex-Boyfriend", "More Than Useless", "Maintain Consciousness", "The Only Thing Worse Than Beating A Dead Horse Is Betting On One".
My Non-music rec's are:
Coke Blak - A mixture of coffee and Coca-Cola. I don't care what anyone else says, this is like the greatest drink I have ever tasted. I wish they made 2 liters so I didn't have to go out and buy a huge case of 6 four packs haha.
Going Outside - Seriously, get out there and enjoy the nice warm weather and hang out with some friends.
CMT - Before I get ripped to shreds for saying I watch this, I only watch the one Coyote Ugly show and Sexiest Southern Women Countdown which led me to realize one thing: Girls with southern accents rule.

well jason, i didn't share your opinion on the new format release, but i'm totally with you on afi and the hush sound. wow, 2006 is really starting to pick up with quality albums.

There is no flow to it, I dunno, E11 is spreading themselves too thin with that disc and it falls on its face badly. But I do enjoy the first two discs. It's gonna be a fun, lengthy, and tough review lol

i think semi-charmed life and graduate are the worst songs (term used very loosely, as there isnt really a bad song on the record) in my opinion. im surprised you didnt mention motorcycle driveby, the single most greatest third eye blind song in existence.
Jason you ever going to check out Forever In Motion? I really think you would like it.

I went to the deerhunter/APES/LIARS show last night and was completely blown away by APES. They don't sound that good recorded but seeing them live was a completely different experience. Liars were really wierd and exciting...so basically I recomend going to that show if it comes near you.
I also recomend seeing Nick Cave's The Proposition starring Guy Pearce. That movie is brutal.

Standard of Living (http://www.purevolume.com/standardofliving) - I have seen countless bands live and honestly this band puts on one of the most true to recording shows I have ever heard. The singer's voice is phenomenal. If you like what you hear pre-order their new EP on Smart Punk (http://www.smartpunk.com/product.php?item_id=18159) now.
Colors In The Air (http://www.myspace.com/colorsintheair) - Holy underrated Batman! I hope these guys get the props they deserve soon. I would say this band is for fans of Copeland.
Punchline (http://www.myspace.com/punchline) - Okay so I know their CD came out a few weeks ago, but I am addicted to it. If you order your copy before midnight at FBR's website you get aphone call from one of the guys. Cheesy but fun!

yeah dude definatley good call. at first i wrote this thing off and went to the hit the lights cd but i got sick of it in like 2weeks and gave this cd a chance. its such a good cd to rock out in your car. one of my favorite songs are "they are strong hands". the bass line in that is so rocking!
oh yeah everyone i say go check out LANSDOWNE http://www.myspace.com/lansdowne . its really good radio friendly pop rock. for fans of goo goo dolls, bon jovi and whatever pop rock is in the top 40's oh yeah and for those of you who live in mass they're from boston so that makes them that much better
same with UP RIGHT KITE http://www.myspace.com/uprightkite . both vocalists from these bands are amazing :) so go check em' out!

The only thing that I recommend is going to see Gatsbys American Dream on their headlining tour. They put on such an amazing show while playing an equal amount of older and newer material.
Gatsbys American Dream - Why We Fight, Ribbons & Sugar, In The Land Of Lost Monsters EP, and Volcano should make for a good time.

For us or everyone else?
The way I see it, staff should not be recommending albums that they know only they have. Sure, I'm jealous and wish it was me, but how the fuck can you recommend people check out something that's not even out? Recommending The Early November is one thing, recommending a triple album 2 months from release just to flaunt that you have it is another thing. These are recommendations for people to discover new music, not look-what-I-get-for-working-for-Jason-Tate.

- JeffWell, who the hell said we are all recommending the albums that haven't been released? For me, for example, I recommended Sleeping at Last because they posted 2 new songs to their Mypsace profile, and I love them, not because I have some fucking album that doesn't even have a release date or whatever.
It is not always about the album, which it sometimes can be to stir up hype, but also the artist. A lot of times, artists who have albums not yet released will post songs on PV or myspace in advance if you have not noticed. Hence, when I recommend Fair, whose album is not out yet, I obviously link to their MS page so you can get a taste of what is to come. I fail to see how that is unfair.

Wow, someone is Mr. Cranky today. I wasn't even referring to you...
"Drew: The Early November - The Mother, The Mechanic, And The Path"
I like Drew and all, it just doesn't seem like it should be recommended. That's what I'm referring to. Go outside, breathe some air, it'll be ok. Oh, and the world does not revolve around you.

- JeffFirst off, chill out yourself. You were the one starting off being accusatory.
As for Drew's rec, who cares? Would it be better if the post was called "What we are listening to?" Even still, he recommends that - so does that mean "haha look what I have, and you don't?" No, it means, check out the songs posted online, and pre-order the discs if you dig it. Doesn't seem like much of a problem, really. Just a "hey, get excited" gesture.

We established this already.
