We Came As Romans – To Plant a Seed
Record Label: Equal Vision
Release Date: November 3, 2009
If you haven't heard of We Came As Romans, get ready because they're headed at you like a freight train into a brick wall. Amongst the chaos and wreckage, you'll find strings, heavy and intricate guitar work, magnificent vocals, and most importantly, love.
What separates WCAR from acts like The Devil Wears Prada and Attack Attack! is their range; they don't just do one thing and repeat. Each song offers a new taste. They play music to plant the seed of love, something they hope can grow in everyone that listens to them or sees a show. They are the best band I've ever seen at practicing what they preach. You will not find a nicer bunch of guys than Andy, Dave, Eric, Joshua, Kyle and Lou.
The CD opens up with the title track “To Plant a Seed,” which boasts some heavy guitars and vocalist Dave Stephens tearing it up like it’s 1983. At the first taste, this CD is heavier than the Dreams EP, and yet even more melodic. The guitar work is intricate and blends so well with the synthesizer. It becomes apparent that synth player/vocalist Kyle Pavone has stepped up his game on this CD, sounding even better than the Dreams EP, which is quite an impressive feat. On drums you’d never believe that drummer Eric Choi just turned nineteen, blasting out complex fills and impressive arrangements of drums that make WCAR that much better.
“Broken Statues” was the first track to be placed on MySpace prior to the release and is definitely their best track to date. Featuring excellent strings combined with duel vocals, gang vocals and excellent breakdowns it will catch your attention in a heartbeat. It also is one of the best examples of what WCAR is here to do with the lyrics “Show me your hands let me wash them clean. Show me your heart and let me heal you.”
“Roads That Don't End and Views That Never Cease” is a song about being out on the road and missing home, but what it isn’t is a stereotypical song about being on the road. There is vocal layering that makes it hard not to sing, and breakdowns that make it hard for you to stay sitting in a chair.
The songs “Dreams” and “Intentions” have be redone from the release of the Dreams EP with minor tweaks. The singing sounds cleaner and there is some extra guitar work in parts, as well as heavier screams. Normally I’m not a fan of tracks that are redone, but these were done tastefully and definitely add to the flow of the CD.
“We Are Reasons” starts off with strings that have a familiar sound; they sound like the music played between songs at WCAR shows. It's pretty cool to see them used in a song. It’s got twangy guitars and an overall heavy feeling that inspires fists pumps and singalongs alike. Some moving lyrics at the end of the track “I plead to change my life, just before I dream. And wake to realize that change is inside me.” Bold words to end a song on, and they leave a lasting mark on the listener.
“Beliefs” starts very slow and laid-back but transitions to heavy synthesizer and alternating guitars. It builds to a climax at a chorus which features both vocalists dueling back and forth. Guitars ring out like shots fired, and the drums and keyboard play very well together. In the middle of the song the keyboard is the focal point with a breakdown with vocalist Dave Stephens belting out “Find faith in life. In whatever will keep you breathing.”
The CD closes with “An Ever Growing Wonder” and the line “So let us restore each other, not with haste, but gently. For an empty cup cannot fill another.” It does a great job to leave the listener thinking about the message they have just received.
We Came As Romans is currently on tour with The Chariot and Oh Sleeper. Following that tour, they are on tour with I See Stars, Broadway and Of Mice and Men. Be sure to check them out soon while they are at small venues, because as you'll see by my ratings, this cd is that good-- no gimmicks, no filler, and before you know it We Came As Romans will be headlining at Warped Tour.

Sick sick sick sick CD. It exceeded every expectation I had for this band.

I don't know...yes, this band is talented but at the same time...the whole singer with high vocal range mixed with a low end screamer has all been done the same. Yes, its how the music is meant to be because of the genre but to say they stand apart from other bands in the genre is kind of hard since they all seem to blend into one honestly. But yes, on a technical level the instrumentation is good and on a level of the "screamo" genre they've got all the ingredients so they'll go far within their scene but thats probably about it since this genre is pretty played out now.

This review wasn't very balanced, but I still agree with it :D I mean they're not the most original (synth, strings, scream/sing) but I enjoy them. This album put them into a more post-hardcore genre than the synth style of their EP - which takes some use to adjust to, but they are addicting as ever!

Shit sounds generic as fuck and belongs on Rise Records, not Equal Vison. How are they different from all the other sing/scream scenecore bands?
It sounds this way because it has been produced by Joey Sturgis.
Though I'm not putting him down in any way possible, and I don't mean to offend anybody, but he definitely has his signature style and I can recognize one of his albums right away.
And what separates this band from the others are their solid musicianship, precise and impressing guitar work, melodic and often orchestral arrangements, and their message of love and brotherhood.
I've watched this band grow since 2006, and the changes have been incredible. They deserve to make it.

It's not "christcore silliness" that's a pretty arrogant remark. What WCAR preaches is not "Obey God or you will perish!!" they preach solely about love. No bells or whistles, just love, love for your fellow man, not because they're a believer in God, but because they are your brother in Christ. Please don't compare this to Chiodos, it's as far away from it as can be.
Also, it isn't garbage. Yes the production has a "sound" to it, but that is the trademark of Joey Sturgis...that I happen to love, after all this is a review of my opinion.

The clean vocals on this are excruciating. This album doesn't even sound real with its super over production. I was really looking forward to this, very disappointed.

11/13/09, 07:52 AM
I've heard that from a bunch of people. Plus it's always mentioned in every single We Came as Romans thread
Chiodos does all of that except the Christcore silliness much, much better.
Not really.
Drew Beringer has given low 70s - mid 80s to Devil Wears Prada, Oh Sleeper, August Burns Red, Silverstein, From First to Last, Chiodos and countless other scenecore bands.
I'm not sure if WCAR would be considered Christcore? I know that a lot of very religious people drink alcohol and it's not seen as a bad thing, but for some reason, drinking and being a christian in this scene (either band or fan) is looked completely down on to the point where it's almost the stereotype that if you drink you're not christian? And I've seen pictures of everyone from WCAR drinking before.
I had a good laugh though when I found out not everyone in Oh Sleeper is actually christian. I did shots of Jack with their guitarist once

There is no way possible that you can convince me that this album is as good as you say it is. This sound has been done over and over again. Like others here have said, the review is completely unbalanced and your bias shows through more than anything.

Depends on the girl. My girlfriend likes mainly only pop and pop punk and bands I can't stand (nevershoutnever comes to mind, I seriously hate it) but she recently got into We Came As Romans. I can see a decent amount of girls hating it though

I do not work for the band... Happened to find them randomly after the Dreams EP and it really changed my life. Since this is a review of my opinion, I believe it can be as one sided as I want. I find the lyrics to be extremely moving, and the message of brotherhood and love to be 10 steps up from whatever other music is out there. If you don't like it, don't listen to it...this is how I feel about this CD, and this band's music. It's been a stepping stone in a big movement in my life, and I'm thankful for it.

a review by nature should not be one-sided. it's a critical evaluation of a work, and since no work is perfect, a one-sided review defeats the purpose and makes people question the authenticity of the reviewer.

Well in my honest opinion, I do think a 95% is a Bit too high, you usually get that for an album, that make's a huge mark, making you wanty to listen and listen until you cant anymore, Quite personally, the album would generate to me from first listen a 89 percent the first listen is memorable, this band doe's do thing's a bit different from your usual post hardcore and dont really go for constant techno,(I e:Attack Attack! who i wont bash because they're fun to listen too) their guitar work is Quite skilled, then most for the genre, so i give them that, i think the album's gimmicky, In a good Way, beleive me im a huge Fan of we came as roman's music, im very proud of the transition they made from their demo's, Now i wil lsay, the album start's get bland and you probably only wanna listen to the song's you like the most like me, Lyrics? eh, you cant really bash them for having what they have, because not many band's in this genre, write great defying Law's and in that case, the ten is fine, this is a solid review to me, and i think you should just rate it next time, but not on bias, i think that would be an honor to the band, the most memorable track on this album is definetly broken statue's

definitely overrated. they're ok, but not worthy of a 93%.

anybody else get this strange feeling that they were listening to a track from tdwp's "with roots above and branches below" when listening to this cd? it's not necessarily a bad thing, i'm a fan of that album. i was just surprised that their riffs and synth combinations sound too similar to that of tdwp.
nevertheless, a beautiful album. lots of mastering, but that's just how this band is. i've been listening to this band ever since they hit the modern exchange in southgate, mi and got started. they are actually great performers, but if you're looking for exact replications of their cd to their live performance, that just won't happen. they've simply made you a awesome collection of songs with the best synth melodies you will ever hear.
i thought their dreams ep was pretty impressive, but this cd just blew me away. give 'em some cred. they're trying to be more than a "chug-chug riff breakdown chug riff breakdown" band. their sound is fresh and i think they're going to be a huge band in the future.
Oh, WCAR... I was at their very first show when they were still called "This Emergency." Let me tell you, they've improved immensely since then. I've grown to genuinely like this band, even without my personal biases. That said, I do think this album is more in the 70-80% range. They definitely have the potential to be in the 90-100% range, but I do agree that some of the songs are less spectacular. Also, I wish they kept their one-word title thing.
Personal favorites:
To Plant a Seed
Broken Statues
Dreams
Beliefs
Shapes (okay, this is from their EP >.>)

couldn't have put it better myself *high fives* and @dtomczak they're album was produced by the same guy who did with roots and brances, joey sturgis, so if that help's then yeah haha, listen to asking alexandria and you'd also hear some tdwp breakdown's in their song's

@KennyDRomans
yup, i'm a fan of asking alexandria too. i know what you're talking. i can totally hear them rip off of tdwp breakdowns and i swear i heard an old blessthefall breakdown somewhere in one of their songs. but they're a really good band nonetheless.

to one his own, i think we came as romans do thing's to seperate them from even more generic band's. personally im tired of them being dissed, they're not scene, breakdowns are great, auto-tuning clean vocal's need to stop, without my personal biases, this band isn't as generic or bad as people make it. not nothing new, not nothing spectacular, but something fresh to a now stale genre.

you cant compare these guys with chiodos, or any other band that relates in no way shape or form to we came as romans. Sturgis produced the record, its quite evident from the way it sounds. However "genre" inspired it was, it mastered the genre. This was the best CD, lyrical and instrumental, i have heard this year from this genre, and im damn proud to be from michigan along with them

As being from the Michigan local scene, these boys have some BIG HEADS on their shoulders, arrogance drives their personalities. And what for? It would be different if they could sound like their album live and the clean vox would actually be represented equally like the album. It is sad music has come to this...
As for the album goes, I will say it sounds fantastic. (Thanks to an awesome engineer and editing tools). To be serious though... the album did come out great, it is different I will say in some ways, but generic at the same time.

I actually happen to really like Kyle's live vocals. The album is great but the band really brings it live too.
