I—I believed—memory might mirror no reflections on me,
I—I believed—that in forgetting I might set myself free.
But I woke up this morning with a piece of past caught in my throat…
And then I choked.
I bled—I tried to hide the heart from the head.
And I—I said I bled—In the arms of a girl I'd barely met.
And I woke up this morning with the present in splinters on the ground—
And then I drowned.
And if I can't see it’s for want of—you
You said, "I see"
If there's nothing here then it’s probably mine
My—My turn to see—if there's nothing here it will always be mine, mine
But I woke up this morning with a piece of past caught in my throat—
And then I choked.
I—I guess I've learned the taste of days that will always burn.
I—I guess I've learned if it’s in the corner of my eye I can't always turn.
And I woke up this morning with the present in splinters on the ground—and then I drowned.
And if I can't see it’s for want of—you
You.

What would i give, to behold
The smile, the face of love?
You never left me
The rising sun
Will always speak your name

It won't be long, we'll meet again
Your memory is never passing
It won't be long, we'll meet again
My love for you is everlasting.

I mourn for those who never knew you
I mourn for those who never knew you

It won't be long, we'll meet again

But Rites of Spring are?

That's sarcasm, right?

http://www.fourfa.com/

Phase one: "emocore" Rites of Spring, Embrace, Gray Matter, Ignition, Dag Nasty, Monsula, Fugazi kind of, Fuel, Samiam, Jawbreaker, Hot Water Music, Elliot, Friction, Soulside, early Lifetime, Split Lip/Chamberlain, Kerosene 454.

-Starts in DC in 1984/85 and goes strong, spreads to the SF Bay in 1989, then explodes all over the Midwest, Florida, and Northeast shortly thereafter.

-The "emocore" style has become broader over the years. In the beginning, these bands consisted mostly of people who played in hardcore punk bands, got burned out its limited forms, and moved to a guitar-oriented, midtempo rock-based sound with emotional punk vocals (i.e., no posed soulful crooning like pop music). The central aspect here is the guitars - distorted, strummed mostly in duo unison, with occasional catchy riff highlights. This becomes known as the classic "D.C. sound," along with the octave chords that show up in later "emo" music. Later bands bring in more pop elements, like catchy-riff based songs, pop song structures (listen to Jawbreaker's "Chesterfield King" to illustrate this), and less-punk, more-smoothly-sung high-register singing (less yelling, straining, throatiness). Listen to Elliot or Chamberlain for an example of how alternative-pop this music has become. Yet those bands are undeniably still emocore. Also note most emocore bands play Gibson Les Paul guitars, with a few SGs, and use mostly Marshall JCM-800 amps.

I'm not saying Rites Spring aren't..I guess I just thought Glassjaw were considered as well.
I know they weren't in the 'first wave' of 'real emo' or whatever. But I would think they at least fall into the same category.

They have some of that influence in musical style, sure, but they'd fall more easily into a post-hardcore label. Personally, I don't care what genres bands get tagged as, but "emo" is such a catch-all lately and people fail to realize the origins of the term and the whole movement centered around it.

Okay, I guess that makes sense. I don't really pretend to know what bands fall into which genre, especially with emo that everyone gets so caught up in arguing about. I do agree with you on the fact that people use the term way too loosely, though. Like bands that were mentioned earlier [Drop Dead, Gorgeous, Alesana, FFTL, etc] I can see being mistakenly labeled as emo, but Glassjaw I thought would be more so a part of the former.

Mouth the words to deny, deny the symptoms, as 'oh yeah I'm doing fine', as I've found a most endearing psychosis.
Somewhere out there there's a thrill I swear. Desperate as I am I just can't strip bare and bleed the only purity I've known.
But I lay with reason. Found logic concieved in a walk with skin. I lay with reason producing these monsters.
Under painted catcalls as in temptation. yeah there's a key to be in, but there's no shade, no shade to blame.
Waterfalls in a cool grey, and the struggle is colored grey this day. The caw of crows fills up the picture plane.
Our picture plane is veiled in central neutral grey. Absinthe to slight the pain. This world's this worst case color scheme.
Streaks of oil stain, stained the road he crawled on homeward.
Oh yeah, oh yeah he killed the switch with some unwieldy gauge, absence and light remain.
I lay with reason found logic and reap in a walk with sin. El sueno razon produce monsinios.
When does this dream end? Now I've missed another whole season
I've missed the fall, clearly its fallen on this land as fields once green are ochre now.
This is no dream. Trees have turned to skeleton, roots teased and knotted just below the surface skin of ground.
Stitched between the earth and the sky struggling to hold it down.
Sometimes to realize you have to lose track of sight blurring my vision makes it clear the tiny moving parts make up the whole.
The image is clear, a tower is built of my own pride, I cry in the shade that if offers, the only shelter I've known.
When does this dream end? This is no dream. This is the walking living breathing caricature of a memory.
Shamelessly I cave in to temptation of creation. But still my only thrill is empty sidewalks, silent streets.
The caw of crows fills up the picture plane. This is your picture plain in central neutral grey.
This world's this worst case color scheme. Streaks of oil stain, stained the road he crawled on homeward.
Oh yeah, oh yeah he killed the switch with some unwieldy gauge, absence and light remain.
life is lowly anonymity, in death a noble pose, a Marat David.
Tell me who wouldn't give their lives for such a soap box to die behind. Life is lowly, lowly anonymity.
In the space of a smile I found sleep. As in sorrow, so shall ye reap, as in reason so shall ye sleep.
Reap the promised end to the struggle. Reap every point on our linear path.
Reap the smiles in time we borrow, every harvest relies on the last.
Reap the promising song of the sparrow, that they learned from the birth of sea.
Silenced by the threnody of the crows. Reap the fallen fruit of the dogwood tree.
But I witnessed in all this silence one souls definition of beauty. a backlit smile so temporary.
A facade so rich with evil history. Cast in direct opposition set to overwhelm his moment to shine and sleep-
came out on top of what was borrowed, and found all that beauty to be still.
Every breath as in sorrow, reap the promised end to this path, by every image that we borrow, every harvest depends on the past.
Subdivide in factions our linear forever, we subdivide our waking hours to sleep.
While guilty eyes turn toward a porchlight, enlightenment is losing sight.
Somewhere out there there's a thrill I swear. In this low light town when my shift begins the streets reflecting yellow, yellow, yellow in the vacancy that overwhelms the red, red, red, your vehicle the color of expansion.
"Open up." the latter just a thought to thrill me "knock knock knock" the latter just a thought to thrill me.
"Red" is a four letter word. Four letter invitation. Now my head is locked in the direction of the sun...
Life is lowly anonymity, in death a noble prose, a Marat David.
Tell me who wouldn't give their lives for such a soap box to leave behind.
Life is lowly, lowly anonymity. I know its all been done before, I want to do it again. I want do it again.
Kill the switch.
This night our journey's through the dark.
Kill the switch, a welcome comatose, tonight we journey through the darkness.
As in sorrow, so shall ye weep, as in reason, so shall ye sleep.

Because it cuts so deep to see myself wishing upon melting stars
I cut the cord I finally give in...
Beyond visions of wretched smiles
And the dread that they've befriended
I have seen an end to you and I
(when did "we" begin)
And a warped sense of being that I embrace must exist
And we with whole hearts yet broken words
We dream of wisdom but I yearn only for you
You will destroy me with words that you have never spoken...
I've drawn a picture of us twisted within
Yet below this world I absorb life from portraits
As long as we remain abreast of one another we will never meet each other
As long as we whisper to one another we will never fully hear each other
As long as my eyelids are weighed down by desire and one dying wish
I will never know when you appear

This is an open ended sky
With open eyes too tired to look away
Say you'll stay forever by my side
And forever we'll be standing here
The dead still, walk the street
This means war, on everyone
You can't hear, them lying to us
You can't see, their fingers crossed
The dead still, walk the street
This means war, on everyone
You can't hear, them lying to us
You can't see, their fingers crossed
Lets keep our thoughts, on gaurd this time
We'll keep on moving on
Just don't let them get to close
Lets keep our thoughts, on gaurd this time
We'll keep on moving on
Just don't let them get to close
In the land where the dead still walk, walk the streets.
This means war, on everyone
You can't hear, them lying to us
You can't see, their fingers crossed
This is a test
We know our own strength
We'll take the east
And march on
Make our way, burning all our bridges
State by state, we march on
Make our way, burning all our bridges
State by state, we march on
And we march on, leaving trails of hope behind us
With our hands to the sky
The wind will be our gide
At times like these
To be the last one standing
Hope is all we have left
At times like these
To be the last one standing
Hope is all we have left
To be the last one standing

I think so many emo/screamo songs rely on the delivery that it doesn't really do them justice to be copied as a wall of text; however after saying that I also think there are some that stand alone just as well or better than in the song. One of my favorites:

I Hate Myself - "To a Husband at War"

Things are here
And you're over there
And in between land, sea everything
I hope you're warm
And I hope you think of me
In Petersburg the way things used to be
Yesterday, a telegraph said that you had died
But I knew, but I know that it was a lie
I tried to laugh
But I went back to my room and cried
I mean our room
I went back to our room and cried

Retreat, and come back home.

Yes, I am hater of the misuse of the word "amazing". It should be reserved for bands with superior quality, yet you have attatched the term for a below-average insignificant scene band.
thats a stupid thing to say. OBVIOUSLY everyone's taste in music is different. everyone's taste in everything is different.
sure they're a scene band. whats your point? tbh, the term amazing is only directed at one of their songs.
knife to face round one. maybe listen to it, get back to me?
also if you took a look at my profile you would know that my music taste is diverse, as most people's is.

out of curiousity, who do you primarily listen to?

people need to grow up.
this thread is open ended. if you think its stupid/ridiculous/the fucking dumbest thing you've ever read, STOP READING IT!
if people are going to be all "i don't know what to think of this thread.." and all condescending and patronising. fuck off.
it's dull and boring to read, and there's no need for it.

Your taste is the antithesis of diverse, it is 100% pure shit though, I'll give you that. Not a single band has musical merit.

But, y'know.

Great band, I def feel that the three songs on the split with Twelve Hour Turn are their best material, those song's are seriously some of my favorite. So good.

The split with Twelve Hour Turn is so good, it was actually a toss up for me between To a Husband at War and Kamikaze. I'm not sure I have a favorite release from them though, I really enjoy them all.

First of all you said DD,G was amazing, not that one Alesana song.

Ok, I listened to the song...it's completely unoriginal. Scream, sing, scream sing, scream w/singing overlaying. Thrown in soft bits (piano) to make it seem more balanced, but it's quite forced and in turn, lame. The lyrics are pretty horrid, and really repetative. Overall it was really uninteresting.

Well, my favorite genres is Post-Rock (and related genres), bands like Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and Mogwai. However, my favorite band is Pink Floyd, and all their contains a much wider variety (and higher quality) than your music tastes overall, so I don't even have to get into the other types of music I listen to.

I don't really care what you listen to, it's when you made the claim that that band was "amazing" rather than saying "I think that band is quite amazing" or something along those lines...you used the word in an objective manner when you could have used it in a subjective matter, because objectively, that band is no where near amazing. Not even for it's type of music/it's time period.

hahahahaha this thread is fucking horrible. first post is the best.

The humble and righteous and meek
Are teaching me who's will to seek
But who really knows how to speak
About these things

Questions of where can he go
When he is feeling so low
And kicking himself just to show
How he still bleeds

And I want to know the difference between
What sparkles and what is gold

I wonder how many eyes
Are fixed like a vulture's on me
Now I wonder if I can even move or breathe
Without disappointing someone

And I know what they call themselves
But I don't remember inviting them
To put me on this pedastal
And make me feel so naked

Afraid to look down
Afraid to turn around

I bring it on myself
I know I bring it on myself

And I want to know the difference between
What sparkles and what is gold

I walked along beside the purple mountains beneath the orange sky
Imagined what it all might look like with these planks out of my eyes
I wondered if the big white horse was coming down tonight
I wanted to taste that victory but my mouth was dry

There is only tonight and the light that bleeds from your heart
Makes me want to try and start again

If ignorance is bliss
Then eradicate my knowledge of my history
Now meaningless left on my own
I looked for a long time
Crossed paths with your kind
But some things are better left alone

Wake up lonely
Hating my life alone...

I really like those lyrics. Perhaps I should listen to the band.

Because of you she left the room
