Last night I went to check out the new band that Fred Mascherino (ex-Taking back Sunday) and Andy Jackson (Hot Rod Circuit) recently started, Initials. They played at a random show at a small place in Brooklyn called Cameo Gallery. It was the 2nd show the band has ever played. They only played about 6 songs, closing with the song currently up on their Myspace page (http://www.myspace.com/initials), The Hills of Birmingham. I think another one they played was called When It All Falls Apart. Andy only sang lead vocals on 1 of the songs; Fred was lead vocals on the rest, with Andy doing backup vocals and harmonies, mainly during the choruses. I'm a Hot Rod Circuit/Andy Jackson fan and I love his voice, and wish this were a project with him as the lead, but I'll take what I can get. They seem to write good songs together, and I enjoyed their set. Hard to really tell what their sound will be since I heard them at their second show ever and the sound was not amazing, but it's basically what you'd expect - melodic punk-influenced rock, with a little of that southern influence that Andy's sound always has.
I didn't stay long at the show itself, but from what I could tell, it was kind of a mess. Everything ran late and Initials ended up switching with another band to play before them (but still an hour later than they were supposed to go on), which I hear pissed off one of the band's managers, or something. But honestly, I find it kind of refreshing that Fred and Andy have to work their way up from crappy shows like everyone else. The first time Straylight Run played a show, it was a sold out Long Island show. For their first show ever. Granted, it was John's first band after Taking Back Sunday, where as Fred has been doing The Color Fred (and isn't an original TBS member anyway), but it still kind of bothered me that Straylight Run seemed to achieve instant success, at least at the small scale. Though it would be great for Andy Jackson to finally find long term success, so go support his new band!
