View Full Version : The Monks (Official Thread)

I'll keep busting these out as they've been somewhat successful. The Monks were comprised of 5 American GIs stationed in Germany during the 60s. There, they honed their craft and developed one of the most colorful, riveting records of the decade in Black Monk Time; their only full-length effort. Often cited as having pioneered the use of audio feedback and being the "anti-Beatles", The Monks wrote oddball herky-jerky rock 'n' roll that wasn't entirely distant from its musical surroundings yet sounded remarkably fresh and creative all at once. Schizophrenic, rhythm-oriented garage rock. Discuss, discover, whatever.

After listening to that video and reading both your summary and their Wikipedia page, I'm definitely intrigued.

(Yeah. It's me. Posting in another one of your threads. Of course. You just have too good of a track record with recommendations for me to ignore, though.)

This thread has seriously not gotten any more posts beyond this? That's a shame. I feel like there are users on this site who do or would like Black Monk Time.

I listened to this album yesterday morning at work, which is what led me to bump this thread. I have to be in the right mood to really enjoy them, but when I am, they're a lot of fun. I think "Shut Up" and "Oh, How to Do Now" are my favorite songs right now.

For a forum which has recently been so big on 60s-70s artists, you'd think people would check this out. It's nice to hear you're enjoying it, Tim.

After reading the new info posted on this thread I think I should get on checking this album out.

I'm sure everyone else will catch on eventually, and when they do, I'll be able to point and say, "Ha, beat you to it!"

I look forward to that day.

If you're looking for more Monks material, Five Upstart Americans (I can't remember if this is the exact title) consists of demos and previously unheard tunes which may strike your fancy.

Comedically, right on time. In terms of rubbing it in my face, I think you're too soon.

Sure thing, bud. Your constant willingness to discover new tunes is reason enough to create these babies.

Ha, maybe you should just start labeling threads, "Yet another band for Tim to check out (Official Thread)."

Always the same faces in my threads anyway so it's not like it would alienate other users.
