View Full Version : One song this year that took you by surprise?
Be it a song from a band you never liked, you had never heard of before, or just blew your mind unexpectedly.
The song that perfectly fits that for me is Between the Tree's Scarecrow. One of the year's best songs... absolutely stunning.
I had heard of Between the Tree's before, but going into Spain I never expected to find such a gem. There are other great songs on the album, but this one was brilliant.

Brand New's "Vices" was pretty surprising...haha.
Manchester Orchestra's entire discography took me by surprise. before then, i didn't listen to much indie. now i'm getting into stuff like Eisley, Lydia, and Tegan and Sara.
black moth super rainbow - forever heavy
blew me away, and now they're my favorite electronic band.

Innerpartysystem - Don't Stop
Their first single completely blew me away. These guys are the reason I'm a huge fan of electronic music now.
Hmmm...
The Swellers - Everything on Ups and Downsizing. Didn't expect such a great album from a FBR band.

brand new eyes was an even better album and Paramore is on FBR. ;-)

I loved Brand New Eyes, but lets face it, Paramore's gotten big enough off of Riot that FBR pretty much let em do whatever with that album. With The Swellers, I was expecting the usual FBR poppy trash that's marketed to sell thousands of copies to 15 year old girls, instead we got a great pop-punk album.
Oh, Set Your Goals also was a pretty nice surprise, though I did have high hopes for that album.

Recently, I would have to say Sherwood's new album QU. I used to listen to them a long time ago, so I decided to get this album. It completly blew my mind. "Hit the Bottom" is an amazing song.

Maybe I should preface every comment I make that is completely unsarcastic with "I'm being completely unsarcastic." At any rate:

a large amount of the songs off of Brand New's "Daisy" in general. i know the band has been progressing, but i didnt see them going in that direction.

They also put on a GREAT live show. I honestly enjoyed them opening for Paramore more than I enjoyed Paramore. And I got a signed copy of the album, which just adds to my current obsession with them

as someone who bought and immediately sold in defense of the genre only liking one song off it - say anything's self titled album blew me away. "cemetery" especially.

i think people should end all of their sarcastic posts with "/sarcasm." that way, everyone will know when that person is being sarcastic, so that there won't be any stupid replies that take that person too seriously.
/sarcasm.

No they did hook me, it's just I didn't think they were quite up to par after the last two albums. I'm sure I'll grow to like it a lot more after I give it a few more listens

in defense of the genre made me question listening to music ever again. i felt like that album was mostly just ridiculousness. on the new album i think max is more together and his lyrics are still unique, crazy, and at times immature...but he doesnt go overboard like i think he did at times on that album. i just hated it.

I love his crazy, immature, and relatively pointless lyrics. I kinda miss them.

Mine would definitely be "Zero" by Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Never would have expected their transition to a synth based sound to be this successful.

Purely surprising? Hellogoodbye- "When We First Met"
Motion City Soundtrack - Dissapear
The Blackout - This Is Why We Can't Have Nice Things
All Time Low - (Pretty much the entire Nothing Personal album.)
There's been some good music this year actually.

I would guess that some of you have probably never heard it before, but for the most part, I am not a huge female artist fan. Over this year, I have acknowledged a few I suppose, but for the most part, still don't like them. I guess my song for the year would have to be...
Until We Bleed By an artist called Lykke Li. She's awesome. ^^

Yeah, it's not my favourite, but it was the song that changed my mind about them.

Brand New - Vices. I needed new boxers, after listening to it fist time round.
Panic at the Disco - New Perspective. Released after Ryan and what's his name left, very surprised how catchy, and good it was.
Miley Cyrus - Party in the USA. This song is actually decent, which took me by surprise. Still hate the Jay-Z and Britney bit though.
Lily Allen - Fuck You. When I first heard this song, I was surprised how happy and cheerful it sounded.

If it was album, it'd be easier. Just one song is hard hard hard to decide on.

Yeah, that's something that came to mind when I made the topic... but people have still been posting full albums, so that's all good. Just anything that surprised you this year.
